I finished Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I enjoyed it but I have one big quibble - (view spoiler)[ I lived in England half my life and I never encountered anything like that level of racism. It seemed to be endemic in every level of society. What a hateful village. Helen Simonson life experience must be a lot different to my own. (hide spoiler)] For this reason I give it 3 stars - also it felt a bit farcical in parts. I like humour a bit more subtle.

I'm in a weird mood, but I have several library books that were on hold and became available all at once. I'm jumping around between them depending on what I want to read. At the moment, I'm listening to The Haunting of Hill House. I want to finish the book before I go back to watching the Netflix series. I'm also trying to finish these other 3 books before they auto return to Overdrive 5 days from now! Showdown in Mudbug, How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life, and A Study in Scarlet Women.
I am reading Birds Without Wings for the yearly challenge. I do not know if I posted this before. Whew - it is another door stop, but a good story, so far.
I like the sound of that one Cherie. I had it down as an option for the ZZ but I didn't get to it. I will be interested to see how you get on.
I finished Magic Triumphs. It's a series orphan for me. I wonder if there will be future books in this series. It could be final, but there is wiggle room for spin off series. There already is with Iron and Magic. Apparently, I should have read this book before Magic Triumps, but I forgot and got all excited when my library hold came available. Oh well.Next up is Mystery. I'm finally going to get to it! I just have to find it in my mess downstairs first.
I have started The Boys from Brazil but I'm not convinced so far. Maybe Ira Levin doesn't translate well to audio.

The old superstitions and customs and how the people in the village live with, react to, and associate with each other are wonderfully done. I'm learning a lot.
Margo wrote: "I have started The Boys from Brazil but I'm not convinced so far. Maybe Ira Levin doesn't translate well to audio."I planned on reading this one too. I don't think my library has the audiobook available.
I am finnaly read Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. It has been on my TBR for years. It wasnot as good as I expected but was worth reading
I finished Call of the Curlew which was good but not great. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Next up for me is The Corset. I enjoyed the author's previous outing, The Silent Companions, so I'm hoping for more of the same.

I have this on my audible wishlist. If there are lots of characters, it may be a bit too confusing to listen to in audiobook format. I think I'll hold off for a bit. I have lots to keep me occupied anyway.
I finished The Boys from Brazil today. I didn't think it was very well written. The characters were like charicatures and the plot was very far fetched.I have only six books left to read for the ZZ challenge! A few weeks ago I was feeling very pressuried by my reading list so I decided I wouldn't finish. That decision took the pressure right off and I started to fly the list. That is so irony the best way to get finished is to decide it doesn't matter if you finish ;-p
Today, Im finishing up Gerald's Game and I've started Annihilation. Love it! Has anyone read the rest of the series? Are they as good as the first book?
I'm reading Songs of a War Boy: The bestselling biography of Deng Adut - a child soldier, refugee and man of hope. Deng was the NSW Australian of the Year in 2017, but boy his story is hard to read (content, it's actually very readable). At least I know it has a happy ending, unlike many other people I am meeting along the way.
Jessica wrote: "Today, Im finishing up Gerald's Game and I've started Annihilation. Love it! Has anyone read the rest of the series? I wonder if the book would fare better. Judging from your comments, it might.
HALLOWEEN! Click-Clack the Rattlebag is a satisfyingly creepy (and free!) short story by Neil Gaiman. Share with your friends and kids!
5★ My review with link to free story
Jessica wrote: "Today, Im finishing up Gerald's Game and I've started Annihilation. Love it! Has anyone read the rest of the series? Are they as good as the first book?"I read Annihilation and Authority. I started Acceptance but dnf'd it. Personally I enjoyed them less and less but then I only gave 3 stars to the first one. Others have given the series as a whole a solid 5 stars though so might just be me.
I finished reading Still Waters and gave it only 2 stars. I am starting today White Oleander, which I have wanted to read for a long, long time.
The other day I thought to myself I wonder if any more books on Uhtred has come out lately. Turned out quite recently yes. I love this series and it's sad that one day I know England will exist which means the story can only last so long. Not sure if the book was as great as I found it or I've just been missing the series but I found War of the Wolf to be a terrific addition to the tale.
War of the Wolf sounds great Travis. Wondering if it would make sense as a standalone? I don't fancy having to commit to 11 books no matter how good they are!
I dnf'ed Chaperoned today. It was a book club book and not my kind of story. The audio was not great.I think I will move on to One Day...... or The Summer Queen. Decisions, decisions :-)
Margo wrote: "War of the Wolf sounds great Travis. Wondering if it would make sense as a standalone? I don't fancy having to commit to 11 books no matter how good they are!"It probably would Margo. Sure you've missed a lot of history before but I don't know that you would need it and I'm not sure this book would give a lot away of the previous books if you wanted to go back.
I read a bunch of reviews and I saw one which said read this one first and you'll want to go back and read the previous 10 which implies to me he doesn't think it's going to rain anything for a reader.
Margo wrote: "War of the Wolf sounds great Travis. Wondering if it would make sense as a standalone? I don't fancy having to commit to 11 books no matter how good they are!"I read book 1. I did like it. I would like to get back to the series. Not sure I'd want to commit to completing it though. haha.
That's what worries me Travis! If I like it I would want to read them all. I read Stonehenge by that author and enjoyed it.Agreed Sarah - that's a lot of books to add to the TBR. I'm already planning to read one mega-series over the next foreseeable :-\
Who is dying to start planning book reads for next year? I am so wanting to start planning. I am still working through my yearly challenge. I feel like it is a little too structured. I haven’t really popped anything new in my list since I want my badge.
Finished The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister

I've been writing tasks every chance I get. The annual challenge will likely be posted the beginning of December.
I finished Assassin's Apprentice for the buddy read and have started my reread of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Our real life book club will be discussing it in our November meeting.
Janice wrote: "I've been writing tasks every chance I get. The annual challenge will likely be posted the beginning of December."Looking forward to it, Janice! Your yearly challenges are always amazing.
In the meantime, everyone can start voting for the Goodreads Choice Awards tomorrow! The winners will be announced December 4th, so perfect timing to fill in the time until the yearly challenge is announced. :)

So excited! Dom and I were able to do a lot of buddy reads this year. I am wondering what next year has in store. ;)
I am currently reading May Day and The Mermaids Singing. My first book by both of these authors.
I can't wait to see the first selections. I always wonder how many I've read and usually it's very few and I just add a bunch to my TBR.
I just voted on the categories I could. The new category (best of the best) is a doozy. There are so many selections and it's hard to select one from different genres.
I agree! I left some of them to vote on tomorrow, including that one. It was just too difficult. I think I narrowed it down to two in that category.
Kristie wrote: "Voting is open!"I have just voted. I could only vote in a couple of categories as I either haven't read any of the nominees or I read one or two of them and didn't like them, case in point being The Chalk Man. I do have quite a few on my wishlist or TBR though.
I agree about the "Best of the Best" category. I'm not really seeing the point of it tbh. I was able to eventually narrow it down and vote, but it was hard because there are so many books to pick from and it's difficult to weigh them up against each other.
Same comments as Lisa. I read some great books that were published this year and saw none of them. It is always the same: we are free to choose whatever book we like - from a limited selection!
Yes the best of the best category is silly. There were loads in there I have read and liked and I found it difficult to choose. I was only able to vote on a couple other categories as I've not read many new releases this year. In fact I have read far less books this year than normal. I enjoy seeing the lists though and not doubt I'll spend some time looking through them all and adding some to my wishlist.

I always roll my eyes at some of the books that make the list, particularly in the Young Adult categories. It's the same authors year after year after year. "The Usual Suspects" as I call them. I'm sure in some cases the books deserve to be there, but some of them clearly only make the cut because of the popularity of their author. It makes me wonder how many people actually read the books they vote for.
Lisa, in the first round you can write in nominees. I often do that. Go through your read shelf and if there are books you loved that weren’t nominated write them in.
Kristie wrote: "Lisa, in the first round you can write in nominees. I often do that. Go through your read shelf and if there are books you loved that weren’t nominated write them in."Oh, I didn't know you could do that. Thanks, Kristie! 🙂
