Enjoy Janice. I love that series. Curious about what it is like on audio. The artwork in the graphics novels were a favourite part of the story for me. It has a great cast though. Tempted to see if I can give it a go too. It says it's based on the graphic novel series so it could be slightly different. Now I'm curious.

Thx Lisa - will check it out.

ETA - I'm going to try Blood Destiny next.
I did wonder how they would pull it off. The artwork is just awesome so if you are able to get hold of it in graphic novel format I would recommend it.
In addition to The Gabriel Hounds which I'm reading for the group read and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which I'm reading for the monthly challenge, I've started Killing It: An Education. It's the story of the author's transition from food critic to expert butcher, and it might not sound very intriguing at first, but I'm really enjoying it. It's not just about the art of preparing meat for food, although I'm learning tons about that, but it's more about taking the lumps life gives you and turning them into something you can be proud of. It's sort of a getting back to your roots and being comfortable with who you are kind of story, and it's set against what turns out to be a really interesting backdrop that spans from a pig farm in France to the food culture in Portland.
I'm done reading my vegetable stew for the monthly challenge. I finished The Beet Queen and The Pumpkin Rollers.
I finished The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, which was my 24 hr toppler read, but took me 36 hours to finish. I loved the story though.
I put Passing back into my To Read list - just not in the mood.
I am still reading My Family and Other Animals and The Long Utopia and will start listening to The Ape Who Guards the Balance tonight.
I have one more Isabel Allende book from the library yet to read. The House of the Spirits but I will probably not start it until after I finish the Corfu book.
Cherie, I read The House of the Spirits in Spanish for an advanced Spanish class in high school. What I remember most about it was struggling to understand it as the language was much more literary than the conversational Spanish the class was mostly teaching. I do remember enjoying the story though. I'll be curious to hear how you like it.
I have been a little awestruck by how many books some of you have on the go at a time, and thought I would never be one of them . . . I am currently reading The Shadow of the Wind to fit the group read theme - Mediterranean. Which I am thoroughly enjoying but can't seem to fit into the Zodiac anywhere :(
Also, still have Ravenshadow on the go for Sagittarius - Native American content. I have stopped and started this one a few times as more pressing deadlines nudged it aside.
Cherie: I also have The House of the Spirits floating in my to-do list, but I think I haven't picked it up yet as I haven't decided which category I am reading it for lol Is it for Gemini with the face in profile, or for Cancer with Merle Streep? Both options will be for badge two anyway, and both categories have alternates that look good too, decisions, decisions.
And, to finish off badge one of the Zodiac my plan is:
Aries - Istanbul Noir
Libra - The Three Deaths of Magdalene Lynton
Sagittarius - Ravenshadow
Capricorn - The March
Pisces - Montana Sky
We'll see how far I get lol
Jenn - Maybe SotW could fit the magic task? Ask Janice in the ZZ Challenge Questions thread. The House of Spirits is set in Chile - South America. I'll let you and Sandra know when I'm done, Tricia. :o)
Cherie - Sadly I’ve already used the “Magic” task 😞 but I’m not really that worried as I am really enjoying the book 😃And, three options for The House of Spirits, what are you trying to do to me 🤪lol
I am thinking of starting Murder on the Orient Express for Johny Depp
and am continuing
, water in the coverand thinking of reading
, for white cover...
I would check tineye for the white cover one siriusedward before you start reading it, it doesn't look 75% white to me.
Nearly finished The Tattooist of Auschwitz really good and sensitive read - and is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two Slovakian Jews who survived Auschwitz and eventually made their home in Australia. In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival—literally scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust. Lale used the infinitesimal freedom of movement that this position awarded him to exchange jewels and money taken from murdered Jews for food to keep others alive. If he had been caught, he would have been killed; many owed him their survival.I strong recommend this book but keep a spare box of tissues at hand - you will need them !!
Jenn wrote: "Also, still have Ravenshadow on the go for Sagittarius - Native American content. I have stopped and started this one a few times as more pressing deadlines nudged it aside."This sounds interesting. Added.
I don't think Shadow of the Wind fits the magical theme. It was "magical" in that it held me spellbound, thoroughly enjoying it. But I don't remember there being magic in it.

It appears that it's already on my wishlist.
Janice wrote: "Jenn wrote: "Also, still have Ravenshadow on the go for Sagittarius - Native American content."Ravenshadow is very it is interesting, incorporating a lot of issues, everything from trying to find a place in the white world, to residential schools, to trying to keep tradition alive - and I'm only 25% into it.
And, no worries on The Shadow of the Wind, I don't see anywhere it would fit (that I haven't used already lol), I am just enjoying the read :) And, having Carousel Beach turn into more than just a toppler softened the blow.
I'm with Janice. I wouldn't class TSotW as magic themed. I bought the tattoist of Auschwitz a few months back. I reckon it would make a good group read (or buddy read).
Sarah wrote: "I'm with Janice. I wouldn't class TSotW as magic themed. I bought the tattoist of Auschwitz a few months back. I reckon it would make a good group read (or buddy read)."
I bought it a few months ago too. I would be up for participating in a buddy read of it if one gets arranged.
I also want to read The Tattooist of Auschwitz and it’s in my TBR, but it’s not available here yet. I think it comes out in September. I have a hold at my library, but it will probably be a couple of months before it comes in.
Maybe we schedule it in for sometime towards the end of the year. November? We can always push it back if publication is delayed there.
I thought I might join you as I have seen this in borrowbox (library download) but it's not available til march '19. I guess not....must be good!
It's already been a book of the month (group read) in two of my other groups. I wasn't able to join either time because it's not available to me. November sounds good to me, Sarah.
I've started a buddy read thread for The Tattooist of Auschwitz here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I finished Blood Destiny on audiobook last night. I gave it 4 stars because I couldn't put it down, but I don't think I'll read more in the series. Sometimes, the 1st book is enough.I will start Trail of Broken Wings later today.
War and Peace , finished 30%.Tolstoy is amazing. The Things They Carried, water in the cover
and
Just started
Dracula, horror....
Thinking of starting To The Bright Edge of the World , white cover..
Curious to see what you think of Broken Wings, Janice. I’ve been wanting to read that one for a while.
Kristie wrote: "Curious to see what you think of Broken Wings, Janice. I’ve been wanting to read that one for a while."I initially bought it because of one of the annual challenges. I needed a photographer, and apparently the MC is one. I'm a little apprehensive about the book. I hope it's not a dud.
I finished group read book The Gabriel Hounds. 3.5 stars. My next kindle book will be Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden's Syndrome.I am 75% into The Outsider on audio.
Kristie, I started listening to Trail of Broken Wings and so far, I'm really interested in the story. I had arranged to meet with friends tonight and I didn't want to turn off the book. LOL!
Sandra wrote: "Janice, I think I used it for the same task you are mentioning. Looking forward to your thoughts."Oh oh! You only gave it 2 stars. I see others gave it 3.
My tablet battery was dead so I had to start a print book. I started Still Life for the Canada task on my ZZ Challenge.
Janice wrote: "Sandra wrote: "Oh oh! You only gave it 2 stars. I see others gave it 3."Yes, I wasn't very impressed by it, but I am glad you are enjoying it more than I did. :)
I finished Patient Zero which I enjoyed more than i thought. That knocked off another zodiac challenge book. Now I'm reading a book just because and working away at series, I've just started King of Thorns. I might be able to fit it in with the zodiac too. We'll see.
siriusedward wrote: "How was the book "When breath becomes air" as a whole ,Sandra?"I was going to do that now. :) I gave it 3.5 stars. I didn't find it depressing or overly sad. Of course it is not a happy situation, but the way Paul, the author, talks about his life, his illness, this life-changing situation is very calm and thoughtful. I can't say everyone will feel like I did (it is a very hard and subjective topic) but I wouldn't say not to read it to anyone.
The reason I didn't give it a full 4 stars rating is more related to my expectations than to the book itself. He treats his illness from the perspective of a doctor becoming a patient. His thoughts about life and death while he was the one treating patients, and how things are while he is the one with the diagnose. Nothing wrong about this. It is a way of writing a book about terminal illness as good as any other, and the author's election. But I would have liked to read more about his family, his friends, his daughter who was conceived when he already knew about his illness. We readers know more about this in the epilogue wrote by his wife, but I would have liked to hear more from his own lips, since he was such a insightful person.
It's been such a long time since i read Prince of Thorns that I feel I'm missing some vital information upon starting the sequel. Just had to go wiki it to get me up to speed. I know i read the book as it was a buddy read but I don't remember much of the summary I read. Oh well.
I will start today Sing, Unburied, Sing which is my book club pick back home. I will send my thoughts to my friends by email. :) It also fits a ZZ challenge task: bird in the cover.
I finished The Silkworm. It was a happy surprise that most of it was set in November so I was able to use it in my Zodiac challenge.I'm going to move right on into book 3 of the series, The SilkwormCareer of Evil.
