My neighbor book club is reading this for July. It is getting varied review from them. It really did have a unique story that made me enjoy it.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I'm reading The Song of Achilles. I finally got it from the library. I'm about a third of the way through and am really liking it so far. (view spoiler)

It is OK. Quiet slow but I like the idea of stepping into an infinite number of new worlds. It is a bit of a disappointment that Pratchett doesn't seem to have had much of an influence.

I think everyone here loved it too :) Did you read Circe? We did a buddy read a few months ago and it was great too!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm going to start On the Edge of Darkness today. I think it's the book that has been on my real shelves for longest. I bought it years ago in a second hand store and never picked it up. None of my GR friends have it on their tbr, and it doesn't have that many ratings even though the average is pretty good but the reviews on the first page are mixed. Ah well, I'll just start it to finally get it off my shelf, and as I bought if for only 2 euros or so I won't feel bad if I abandon it.

message 1057: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments LOL Peggy, I added it to me wish list before I read the rest of your comment! The GR rating is good and I think I have seen it in my library. They have a lot of books by Barbara Erskine and I have been meaning to try one for ages.

There is also a buddy read somewhere for The Song of Achilles, so definitely check it out Tricia!

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished The Witches of New York and started Never Buried. Both are for my zodiac challenge.

message 1060: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I have finished The Long Earth. An interesting concept but the story really dragged in parts.

I have moved onto End of Watch and I am already enjoying the change in pace!

message 1061: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19142 comments My review of The Long Earth was similar, Margo.

"The idea of this book was fabulous, but it just never came together. I felt that I was waiting for something to happen the entire time. Overall, although there were some interesting parts, I found the book quite boring."

Hope you enjoy End of Watch. I thought that was a great ending to the trilogy.

message 1062: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Dancing at Midnight. It was a nice escape, although it was a little too long and the plot was very repetitious.

I finished reading The Boston Girl, one of the group reads.

I am starting Can You Keep a Secret? for my ZZ challenge.

message 1063: by Heather (new)

Heather I'm in the middle of The Memories That Make Us and it has been a good summer read. I'm also starting The Moonspinners for the July read.

Yes, I saw that you all did a buddy read for Circe. Unfortunately, that was before I joined. It's on my TBR though, and I'll be moving it a lot closer to the top.

I'll definitely go back and look for the buddy read thread. Thanks, Sarah, for letting me know.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I can't seem to get out of Boston or the jungle in South America.
Two books that I had requested from the library arrived last night. I started listening to The Given Day and reading Eva Luna.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished The Outsider on the way to my dad's. It was awesome and one of the few 5 stars I've awarded this year. I hope we see more of Holly in future books. She's a great character.

I will start The Secret Keeper on the way home.

message 1071: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 296 comments Dietland I am watching the television series now.

The Black Echo I just binge-watched all 4 seasons of Bosch.

Cut the Clutter and Stow the Stuff: The Q.U.I.C.K. Way to Bring Lasting Order to Household Chaos My never-ending search for good ideas. I am getting rid of stuff like crazy. I recently donated 5 boxes of books to the library. Many more to come!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments That is a long reading slump. Lisa. I hope you enjoy RR. Are you reading it for the Western task in the ZZ Challenge?

message 1073: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I woke before anyone in the household this morning and since I didn't want to wake anyone, I stayed in bed and finished my ebook Never Buried. On the way home, I started the audiobook, The Secret Keeper.

I didn't plan for any more print books this month. I think I'll go with Wandfasted for my Zodiac challenge, and start that when I crawl into bed tonight.

message 1074: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I've just finished End of Watch and I loved it. It finished off the trilogy in style! Definitely the best of the three with King going back to his roots. I find it hard to talk about this one without giving anything away so I won't say any more except that it is a must for King fans :-)

I am starting The Boy on the Bridge for the ZZ challenge.

Hahaha...yes, that was a bit repetitive of me. lol

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading Rosemary and Rue on Saturday. I originally had it on my ZZ challenge, but replaced it with another book that fit the task. I decided to read it anyway, and I am so glad that I did. I have had it on my TBR list for almost 5 years and finally bought it last year. It was a great read and very funny at times. Not falling off your chair funny, but subtle and unexpected funny. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Glad you enjoyed it. It has the best twist in the first 5 pages of many urban fantasies I've read.

message 1080: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I bought that last year for Janices annual "All about me" challenge. One of the questions was about the month in and I was an october baby. Then someone broke the news to me that subtitles don't count :O Ah well - I will just have to read it for no reason haha

message 1081: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19142 comments Margo, I just finished Killman Creek for the yearly challenge this year. Somehow, when I looked at the cover I thought it was all water in the foreground. After reading it, I looked again and thought...actually, that looks like snow with grass. So now I don't think it fits anywhere. Guess I just read it for fun too! That's ok though. I thought it was a great read, so it was worth it. :)

I just found out that Snowflower has been made into a movie a few years back, have any of you watched it?

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sandra wrote: "That is a long reading slump. Lisa. I hope you enjoy RR. Are you reading it for the Western task in the ZZ Challenge?"

I wasn't planning on reading it for that task because I'm not sure how much of a western it is. It appears to be a mix of different genres. However, if it turns out that it will work for that task, I will slot it in. Having said all that, I have just put it back on my TBR pile as it was a case of "right book, wrong time". I think I need something a bit lighter to get me back into reading again.

message 1097: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Well, Retribution Road turned out to be a case of "right book, wrong time". I have no doubt at all that it's a book I will enjoy but I think I need to ease myself back into reading with something a little lighter. I am starting Avalon instead. I'm in the mood for some more romantic historical fiction and I know I will get that with Anya Seton.

message 1098: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I finished The Song of Achilles and really enjoyed it. I rated it 4 stars, but I feel like it should have been more like 4.5. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars was the fact that their were a few minor details I wasn't entirely comfortable with or happy about. It was a great story though and I can't wait to read more from this author.

I'll have to wait a little bit though because I got Uprooted on audible. I'm liking it so far except that the narrator speaks with a bit of an accent. I think it's authentic to the setting of the book, but it does mean that I have to work a little harder to pay attention and understand every word of what she's saying. I haven't decided if I think it adds or detracts from the reading experience.

message 1099: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Just picked up and started The Outsider for the zodiac challenge. 2 books on the go now for the challenge, one I can read at home and one I can read whilst commuting. That will leave 2 more books after that to complete badge one. I need to focus on the challenge a bit more.

Glad you enjoyed The Song of Achilles, Tricia. It's one of my all time favourites. Her new novel, Circe, is excellent too.
