I am with you on that, Peggy. No 5 stars yet but I am willing to wait it out. I think my current read might be the one. The Mayor of Casterbridge

That does perhaps explain why you're struggling with some of the books. After so many 5 star reads, everything else will pale by comparison.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I'm yet to have a 5 star read yet, so very jealous of you all.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Finally reading the first book in the Pendergast series. The Pendergast Files: (#1 and #2 included).
I just finished listening to #6, with Scott Brick narrating. I like René Auberjonois better.

I've only had 1, Rusalka. I've had quite a few 3 and 4 star reads though.

message 560: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I just realized that later in the month I have two similarly titled books to read planned around the same time again. Baby Teeth and Dragon Teeth. I thought it was funny that twice in one month I would end up with titles that match like that, so I figured I'd just comment here. Ok, carry on. lol

Yes, I think that's it Janice.

I finished Lightning very quickly as I hanging round hospital all day yesterday. 3.5 stars. Quite different for Koontz as it was more sci-fi than his traditional horror stuff. I enjoyed it as a light read.

I have Holding lined up for the toppler. I am currious to see how Graham Norton does as a novilist - as I am sure he wrote it himself ;-p

message 564: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I finished yesterday The Alice Network and gave it 3 stars. It was a book club read, and it also fits the Virgo/Maiden task in the ZZ Challenge.
I read a few pages of The Woman in the Window, and I have Flush ready for the toppler in a couple of hours.

message 565: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope which I really enjoyed.

I started The Daylight War for a buddy read and I think I can also use it for the zodiac challenge.

message 566: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments What will you use it for in the challenge Peggy?

message 567: by Peggy (last edited Apr 07, 2018 07:36AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have this cover The Daylight War (Demon Cycle, #3) by Peter V. Brett so I was thinking the blue cover task, but I'm not sure if it's enough blue. According to tineye it isn't :( And I've been planning it for that task since January!

Now I'm thinking about using it for the magic task. I hadn't considered it before, but magic is listed on the main book page and it's already mentioned several times in the first chapter.

Have you read Breathless? I thought it was more SciFi than horror. It's the only Koontz I've read so far.

I ran that cover through tineye (had it open for the challenge) and and the blue tones add up to 75% by my count. Are you sure you're including them all? There are 4 shades of blue right?

I never thought of using it for the magic task - hmm...

message 572: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I added them up to 77.1%, so you're good to count it for blue cover Peggy.

message 573: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's weird. It gives me 5 shades of blue, but they are 20.1, 14.2, 10.5, 5.9 and 5.1, which makes 55.8% blue.

Oh! My cover is actually slightly different: The Daylight War (Demon Cycle, #3) by Peter V. Brett . Strange that one cover gives 20% more blue than the other one, when they are basically the same.

message 574: by siriusedward (new)

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments I am reading The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and Under the Lilacs by Louisa May Alcott ..near 50% done with both...and enjoying both...a good break in between books. ..

message 575: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Travis sivarT wrote: "I don't find Koontz really horrorish ever"

When I started out reading him, 30ish years back he mostly wrote horror. Phantoms Strangers Cold FireDean Koontz - Collection: The Vision The Funhouse. But now that I think of it he used to write a lot of Sci-fi too. It's only his recent stuff that is thriller style - or Odd Thomas which I don't enjoy ;-)

message 576: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments It is weird because I saved the picture from the thumbnail above and got 84.7% blue. I'm going to rule that it's acceptable to use as blue cover. Regardless of the different readings we're getting from tineye, it screams blue to me.

message 577: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments The Daylight War (Demon Cycle, #3) by Peter V. Brett is the edition i have, slight difference?

message 578: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Apr 07, 2018 08:33AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments It seems to be tied to the font choices on the two covers. The curly font takes up less room I believe, so your blue count is higher than the block font.

But not that that matters thanks to Janice :D

message 579: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Great, thanks Janice!

I thought it was very blue too, but with the grey background I wasn't sure if it would be 70% so I used Tineye and the confusion started ;-)

I'll use more of my own judgment from now on!

Yes, and also one cover has the woman to the top of the cover (no background) and shows more of the lower part of her dress. But still, I wouldn't have said that makes over 20% difference!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm starting Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. For some reason it never attracts me enough to actually pick it up, I always choose something else over it. But everyone seems to love it, so I'm finally going to give it a go.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have put The Western Wind on hold for now. I'm getting the feeling that it's something of a mood book and I am just not in the right mood for it at this point in time. I will be coming back to it though as I think I will really enjoy it if I read it at the right time.

I am now starting Caligula. I'm not sure how sensible it is to be reading two books about Ancient Rome at the same time but I am desperate to read this and too impatient to wait until I finish The First Man in Rome.

message 588: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I hope so too Pragya! I read the first 3 chapters and really enjoy it so far.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Peggy, I am one of the few that did not like Snow Flower. I like all her other novels. I just didn't like Snow Flower. I couldn't find any sympathy for the two main chars.

Peggy I am definitely in the pro camp for Snow Flower. Very powerful story.

Lisa, what did you think of The First Man in Rome? Is it worth the investment of that much time?

message 591: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Margo wrote: "Lisa, what did you think of The First Man in Rome? Is it worth the investment of that much time?

I'm still reading it, Margo. I think it's very good and well worth a read if you enjoy reading about Ancient Rome. That being said, I do think she goes on at times far longer than she needs to and tells you a bit too much. I think it could benefit from being a couple of hundred pages shorter. It would still be a good book and it would make the story just that bit tighter and more focused. If I was rating it based on what I've read do far I would give it 4 stars. As for whether it's worth the investment of time, if you are interested in Ancient Rome, you want to learn something new or refresh previous knowledge and you don't mind chunksters then I would say yes, it is worth the time.

message 592: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Sorry Lisa, I misread your last post - I thought you'd finished it. Sounds pretty good so I'll keep it on my short list ....which grows longer by the day ☺

Oh dear, I might need to buy another book. What ever will I do? :P

message 598: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I'm listening to The Daylight War as a part of the current buddy read. I really like this series. Great characters and interesting exploration of different cultures.

The other book I just started today is Stay with Me. It is set in Nigeria and is a story of a barren woman who is faced with humiliation when her husband takes a second wife for childbearing purposes. It is not the kind of book I am normally drawn to but it was recommended to me, and more importantly was available in the library, so I will give it a shot
