This year-long challenge is based on the game of Clue. Each character from the game represents the career of the MAIN CHARACTER (male or female) of the book you read.
For example, for Miss Scarlet/career in law you might go with The Firm. For MrGreen you might choose The Name of the Rose.

Miss Scarlet: career in law
Colonel Mustard: career in the military
Nurse White: career in medicine
Reverend Green: career in religion
Professor Plum: career in education
Mrs. Peacock: career in business
Sergeant Gray: career in law enforcement
Mr. Brown: career as a con artist or spy

Extra-Credit..
Mr. Black/Mr. Boddy: is dead or dies in the story

LindaH | 153 comments I’m having trouble finding books in which the MAIN CHARACTER is involved in the field . Even in Doctor Thorne for example, Dr T is not the MAIN character. Can the CLUE character be one of the characters?

message 9: by Allison, Quest Hound (new)

Allison (rainy-day-reads) | 1298 comments Mod
I've been compiling my reading list and agree - some of these might be hard to know ahead of time. Maybe we can make suggestions for each other before we give up on the main characters, though.

Here are a few with medical main characters that I know of:

The Physician
Murder on Astor Place
A Duty To The Dead
The Midwife's Tale
Cutting for Stone
Middlemarch

Does anyone have suggestions for education?

message 10: by LindaH (new)

LindaH | 153 comments I had second thoughts about giving up the main character so am actually pleased by your thoughts.

I have two books about a head mistress.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
South Riding by Winifred Holtby (the one I decided to read)

Thanks for Medicine suggestions. Will check out.

LindaH-
I think Doctor Thorne is perfect for that category. I read it last year and think that while the romance is important, the doctor is the key character to every storyline in some way.

I read DT recently. Glad to hear it qualifies, I agree. I found a good one for Medicine on Allison’s list above though...

Cutting for Stone

When I saw that my author and friend gave it a rave review AND I could get it on Audible, I knew which book to read. Thank you, Allison.

Tiffany Marin (tiffers919) | 59 comments For the medical field one, does the MC have to be a doctor or would nurse, midwife, physical therapist, etc work?

message 15: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4720 comments Mod
Does not have to be a doctor, just in the medical field. Same with Law, etc.

Allison (rainy-day-reads) | 1298 comments Mod
Thanks for the education suggestions Linda & Renee. I'll look into those. I wasn't thinking about governesses - that widens the field quite a bit!

I just finished The Red and The Black and am not sure where to place it, as Julian is a tutor, then a student at a seminary, then a secretary and finally dies... For right now, I am saying Religion as his goal through the whole book was to advance through the clergy. Any thoughts?

message 32: by Sara (new)

Sara Eames | 9 comments This looks like an excellent challenge, I think I only have one more character to find....So far, my completed list is as follows:
Miss Scarlet: career in law - My Husband's Wife

Nurse White: career in medicine
Reverend Green: career in religion - Conclave
Professor Plum: career in education - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Mrs. Peacock: career in business - The Christie Caper
Sergeant Gray: career in law enforcement - Death of an Honest Man
Mr. Brown: career as a con artist or spy- I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You

Hoping I've understood this challenge correctly and filled in the answers satisfactorily

Thanks for the challenge
