Just finished it as well.. I always worry about the second novel from an author when the first one is good.. often they disappoint.. this one didn't though.

Kerri Green I finished my first for the challenge today. Hand Me Down World. I really struggled to get into this book and kept stopping and starting. Yes by the end I was overwhelmed with emotion and loved the characters and the story being told but it was just too much hard work to get there. I think the same story could have been told better. The idea of the various storytellers can work but it didn't in this case. The underlying theme just doesn't come across consistently either...too many distractions from too many people with individual agenda's. Disappointing really.

I loved the Hitchhiker's series - brilliantly quirky humour. The Kite Runner is also a wonderful read. Good luck & enjoy!

Kate | 25 comments The Enigmatic Mr Deakin by Judith Brett
Well, I am ashamed to say that I have abandoned Mr Deakin. The flow of the writing really didn't grab me. I kept feeling it was the kind of book I should be reading pen in hand for an assignment. Fascinating insights into life in mid-late 19th century Melbourne, and Deakin himself was certainly an extraordinary figure in the rough and tumble of Australian politics pre- and post-Federation. Shame we don't have any recordings of his speeches - he was a marvellous orator, apparently. This book is definitely one for the Auspol junkies out there. I've abandoned this one to the 'TBR' shelf and moving on. My next is the new one from Sarah Perry 'After Me Comes the Flood.' I so loved her 'The Essex Serpent' last year, and am hoping the reviews on the page aren't prescient!

Kate | 25 comments Finished off #2 (Same Author) 'After Me Comes the Flood' by Sarah Perry. Less enthused by this one (her debut novel) than by 'The Essex Serpent' - a gorgeous read. I remain a fan, nevertheless; her singular voice, love of the countryside peopled by intriguing characters in a mysterious world are mesmerising. However, 'After Me ...' was less mysterious and more confusing in its narrative line. Or, again, perhaps it is me ... Bring on the third one, please Sarah! 😉

That’s a series I read years ago when I was a teenager and still living in England. Later on my parents went it live in the area where it is set . The TV series is rather good too. They cast Demelza and Ross perfectly.

I was in Cornwall last June and visited the area where the series is shot. It's wonderfully wild and beautiful ... and it introduced me to the novels. I also bought a copy of Daphne du Maurier's "Jamaica Inn' and read it on the moors. #environmentalreads :)

message 140: by Kate (new)

Kate | 25 comments Phrynne wrote: "And did you visit Jamaica Inn Kate?" Yes, Phrynne - my second visit the first many years ago. Great spot, if a bit touristy now. The day we were there was sunny and mild, and not at all like the storm-ravaged place she describes. Cornwall is one of my favourite spots in the UK. Fabulous coastline and the walks are marvellous.
