Kaje Harper | 17378 comments Hey everyone,

We'll have an open nomination this time, but do be aware that a more accessible book (low cost, in libraries, etc) is easier for members to join in on.

What YA LGBTQ book would you like to read, or do you think members who haven't read it should try, (and those who have read it can discuss), as our BotM for Jan-Feb?

What book made a difference to you, and might to other readers? What sounds interesting, appealing or different?

If possible, link the book page on GR and tell us a little about it or why you picked it, or post the blurb.

The titles of past books of the month that we have read are on all the threads in this "Book of the Month" folder, and you can also check with a search of the group's book-of-the-month Bookshelf at - https://www.goodreads.com/group/books... Please do not repeat a book we have read - either as a past Book of the Month or as a Buddy Read (check the Buddy Read folder) - and please only nominate the first book in a series, unless a later book stands alone completely as a solo read.

Up to two nominations per member. Nominations will be open through Midnight Dec 30th, or sooner if we get 12 nominations - the max for voting. Feel free to renominate a book that did not win in a past vote, if it fits this category.

(Authors please do not nominate your own books - but readers can definitely nominate a member author's work)

Kaje Harper | 17378 comments I'm going to nominate the Rainbow Awards winner for Best Bisexual, Lesbian & Transgender - Young Adult
Winners:
1) Having Her Back Ann Gallagher
Having Her Back Having Her Back by Ann Gallagher

Trevor Larson is a Navy brat. He’s used to moving every few years, and thanks to social media, he can stay in touch with the friends he leaves behind. But shortly after he leaves Okinawa, his best friend, Brad Gray, cuts off contact and disappears.

Four years and two bases later, Brad resurfaces—and announces his family is coming to Trevor’s base in Spain. But a lot’s changed in four years, and Trevor is stunned to find out Brad is now Shannon. Their reunion isn’t quite what either of them had hoped for, but they quickly find their footing, both relieved to have each other back.

Except nothing is ever all sunshine and roses. The military is a small world, and there’s no keeping Shannon’s transition a secret. Parents warn their kids away from her. She can’t attend school on-base for fear of harassment or worse. And although her parents try to hide it, being ostracized by their only social circle while they’re thousands of miles from home is taking a toll on them too.

More and more, Shannon leans on Trevor. But she’s also drawn to him, and he’s drawn right back to her, feeling things he’s never felt for anyone before.

Trevor’s scared, though. Not of dating a trans girl. Not of damaging his chaplain father’s career or reputation. After finally getting his friend back, does he dare take things further and risk losing Shannon a second time?

Little Red Reader (_Little_Red_Reader_) | 3 comments Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

This is an amazing book. It’s about two boys who meet by chance, they seemingly have nothing in common...

This quickly became one of my all time favourite books. I wish everyone would read it, so even if it doesn’t end up as BOTM, I would love for everyone to give it a chance.

I agree - I adore this book, one of the loveliest I have read.

However we did already have this one as our Book of the Month back in June of 2013 when it won the Lambda award - this is the thread for that book, if you'd like to add a comment or review there.

I think everyone should read it too - I'm looking forward to the sequel, although I'm a bit worried it may not be able to stand up to the first book. We shall see...

If you have another book you'd like to nominate please to - we could use some more choices. (You can check the shelf of past BotM to see if we've already done a book here - https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

Little Red Reader (_Little_Red_Reader_) | 3 comments Oh, I’m so sorry that I didn’t see that the book I suggested had already been a previous BOTM! I will revisit the list of previous BOTM books this week to see if I can contribute 😄😄

I’m glad to hear that you really enjoyed Aristotle and Dante!
Have a good day/night ✨💜

Kaje Harper | 17378 comments It is a lovely book - I hope you come up with another suggestion.

Cail | 2 comments I currently have Ramona Blue and Autoboyography checked out from my library right now and would love to discuss them as I get them read. Both 2017 releases, both featuring bisexual teens, which I can never get enough of. Ramona Blue is particularly exciting because it has a protagonist already out as a lesbian beginning to realize she might actually be bisexual, which is a nice change from the usual 'straight person realizes they're bi' narrative.

Kaje Harper | 17378 comments Both definitely sound worth adding to the list. (And I love the idea of a book going the other way - lesbian coming out as bi...)

Rez Delnava (rez_delnava) I will second the vote for Autoboyography and add Perfect Ten.

They both made it onto my 5-star Favorites list this year, which is remarkable because I average 1 of those every 8 months, and I've managed three this year.
