Wowow! Good work, Karin!

message 702: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments 6 months in. 35 read, 2300 points.

message 703: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Finished the "three formats" part of the challenge. Although I've only started purchasing/listening to audiobooks this year, I listened to a book that I'd initially purchased in ebook and since it's now off the backlog, there's 25 points for me!

message 704: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 505 comments I'm at 1900 points currently with 18 books read. The WoT and Tamír Triad buddy reads helped a lot for motivation.

message 705: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments This is about the only challenge I have stuck to this year.
Of the 25 books read so far only four were not eligible.
Also thanks to my monthly reads of my ancient Agatha Christies I have 2395 points.

So far I am on a book diet and have managed to cut down the purchases and I only have to finished an audio book to have all 3 formats.

message 710: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I've finally started reading a previously owned physical book. Shocking, I know!

It's Changing Planes, and I'm enjoying it very much so far. I remember when I first started this book over ten years ago, in an airport. I didn't know what the book was about, so it was a nice surprise when I started reading it. Unfortunately it was a very exhausting work trip, and I never read more than the first story. Now I'm finally reading it again, and it's funny how I can remember exactly what it felt like sitting in that airport realizing I'm reading a funny short story featuring airports.

It's weird, I was going to donate this book to the library when I'm finished, like I've donated all my other books, even ones I love. Suddenly I'm feeling weirdly nostalgic about this one. It's my last physical UKLG, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I decided to keep it.

Love this. Though most of the people I know call it SABLE = Stash Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I have been slacking hardcore on reading again. My life is just all over the place right now. I hope that soon I will settle back into a routine and get back to reading.

Where once I was a few books ahead of my challenge, now I'm 6 behind again. SIGH.

message 714: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6115 comments I'm currently culling my DTBs prior to moving and that's a real pain, especially the Andre Norton ones as a lot of my digital books of hers are collections

sighs

and I'm still finding books that haven't been released in Kindle format yet.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments I'm sinking into a book funk, too. It's depressing. :(

I'd love to be just 6 behind, I'm 86 behind due to an excellent Humble Bundle offering (40+ books for a bit over $26), a sale on Sue Grafton books after she died and another huge sale on Phyllis Whitney books.

Jess Penhallow | 39 comments I've not updated here in a while. Currently on:

Total owned books read so far - 24
Current points total 1890

message 719: by Tina (new)

Tina (teanah) | 55 comments Started with 284 owned books

Read 134 books (36 from the 2018 pile, still need to figure out points.

Current owned books pile 279.

This challenge has been very eye opening, at least my book reading rate is catching up to my book acquisition rate. Lol.

message 720: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Holy crap! That's an amazing number of books. Good work, Tina!!

message 721: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments I desperately need to update my list. I was at 2,740 points for 34 books the last time I updated in June. My book buying has been pretty low this year for me. I have only bought 44 books of those I have already read 17. Not a great ratio but it looks better once I noticed that 32 of those were purchased in the last 3 weeks.

message 722: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments One book away from hitting the 50 Owned TBR books milestone. :D

message 723: by Stephanie (last edited Sep 06, 2018 04:02PM) (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments Ok, here's my update: Total points as of today are 3,120.

Finally got around to making a spreadsheet to get all the points right. Books bought in 2018 are not counted unless 300+ pages.

Total owned books read this year is 46, 38 if not counting purchased in 2018. I only have 3 left from 2010 so I've almost reached that goal.

message 724: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Well done!

Though I wish you'd asked about a spreadsheet...someone was kind enough to make one for all of us to use >.<

message 725: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments I could still try that. I need to take the 2018 books out. Want it all to be equal with everyone else. I couldn't find the spreadsheet. Do you have a link or a message number?

I do! You have to save it as a copy if you want to edit it, but here's the link:

Pat the Book Goblin I’d love to join this challenge in January!!

message 728: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3168 comments Well I'm way behind in points..

And I was doing good about at least not buying things...

But following that stream of August sales, and my library holding a book sale this weekend...

Sigh. This is hopeless. I'm up 12 books from last year and have a total of 1575 points.

message 729: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
I believe in you, Sarah! You can close the gap!

message 730: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3168 comments Ha! If I didn’t buy a single book for a whole year- I’d still have too much to read. I think the problem is my Kindle. I just keep squirreling them away never really realizing how many I’ve collected and not read.

(When the book is costs less than a morning coffee- it’s pretty hard to say no... considering how much more valuable books are to me than a single cup of coffee.)

On the bright side: I’ve read 4 owned books this month. Yay for improvement!

message 731: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
See?? You're on your way!

message 732: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Go Sarah!

I have to say, counter-intuitively, goodreads has been good for my reading of owned books. Now I have a list of books, easily accessed, that I can go read right now! It has helped, when I see a sale, I usually go look at my owned book list and notice all the books I already have and then skip the sale.

message 733: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments For the end of the quarter, and after fixing some mistakes, my total is now 3,742. 43 books (so far) qualified for this challenge and are about half of what I've read this year. Yay! Progress!

My TBR will likely end up higher than I started this year because of the audiobookstand.com closeout, but I keep working at it.

message 734: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Hot damn!! You're almost at 4000 points! Who has more than that right now?

message 735: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 505 comments I'm nowhere near 4k I'm stalled out at 2350 with 20 owned books read because I've been focusing on finishing my club bookshelf challenge instead of my own bookshelf challenge.

message 736: by Karin (new)

Karin (karinz) | 70 comments Another quarter finished. Here is my review for the past 3 months.
Total books read: 14
Over 10 years owned: 10
Over 5 years owned: 3
SF books read: 1
Fantasy books read: 4
Cozies read: 9
Award winners: 6
Total points at the end of September: 4630

By the end of September I had read 33 books. New books coming in only number 20 so I am +13 for the bonus. Unfortunately that could change as I see a trip to the second hand bookstore in my future to donate the books I have finished.

message 737: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
HeyT, you're doing better than I am lol. I think I've read a whopping 3 books owned this year.

Karin!! You're doing tremendously well! That's fantastic!

message 738: by Karin (new)

Karin (karinz) | 70 comments Thanks, Allison. Reading the Earthsea trilogy really helped. My books are ancient, they are award winners and a series. Helped rack up some points.

message 739: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments I have 46 owned books read but many are either short or newish, 3600 pts total. I think I only have 20 new ones added so I am ahead of the game.

message 740: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6115 comments Allison wrote: "Hot damn!! You're almost at 4000 points! Who has more than that right now?"

Total = 8570 points
Read = 117 books from pre-2018 list
Bought in 2018 = 210 books (read 16)
= a plus of 82 books - 8 books donated for a plus of 74

but I'm a self-taught speed reader which means I'm likely to finish more and quicker

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Omg! Impressive!

message 742: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments Karen, I'll bet it feels good to get so many books that are 10 years unread done! Do you still have quite a few left in that group?

Yes, you are fast. I didn't count 2018 books, but acquired 119 books in 2018 but only read/listened to 13. However, some of these are storybundles and of course, the audiobookstand.com closing bonanza.

message 744: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6115 comments I'm not including them in my read total and I'm also not including the donated books, just the pre-2018 purchased Kindle books. As far as why so I purchased so many in 2018, I blame the Sue Grafton slae plus a L.E. Modesitt sale plus a Phyllis Whitney sale plus a huge Humble Bundle all of which added up to almost 100 books for dirt cheap (I couldn't pass them up)

message 745: by Karin (new)

Karin (karinz) | 70 comments Stephanie wrote: "Karen, I'll bet it feels good to get so many books that are 10 years unread done! Do you still have quite a few left in that group?"

Yes!! My mom was a voracious reader of mysteries. I still have boxes of her books to get through.

message 746: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6115 comments Question:

In my TBR list I have a paper version of Italian Folktales purchased (actually given as a gift) before 1985, but there was a recent price reduction for the Kindle version ($1.99 for US residents). If I read the Kindle version can I mark both books as read or should I simply delete the paper version from the list? It's only 235 points, so the points don't bother me. It's more the remove from the pre-2018 list vs counted as read that is the question

message 747: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
I think the goal is to read books you own, so I'd say reading it in another format still achieves that goal.
