CBRetriever | 6113 comments if you bought it in 2017, it's not a year old at the end of 2017 which is what I'm going by. I'm quite willing to add points if this is not the case because I do have a zero points book

message 502: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments That makes sense, CBRetriever. I'll modify my totals to reflect that. All but a couple of the things I've read (i.e. holiday gifts of 2017) still qualify, so I'm still in the game!

This is how I understood it too. I also had a book worth zero points, but really it was a very short story and picked up for free. It still counts toward the overall totals though!

message 504: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I ran into that same problem and I wasn't sure what to do. It was intended to be a minimum of a year old but I don't like that we then don't get any points for something we bought last year. Those zero point ones are particularly strange.

I would go ahead and count anything bought last year as 1 year.

Next year I'm going to do something like 1 point per month for the first 11 months and then 15 points per year to solve the time problem.

Nice- thanks for the clarification. My point totals are on the rise! lol

The boss has spoken!

(re-revising totals...)

I will continue to solicit affection from my cat, regardless of this development.

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Thank you - I'll need to revise my spreadsheet tonight

Thank you for this clarification! My measly point total thanks you too.

Always a wise move with felines.

Try Tuna Juice that usually makes them more loving.

Bribes? ... it might just work! :P

The book in question was purchased in December 2017. I was counting that as less than a year owned, hence zero points, but as Sarah Anne has now clarified I picked up my dog for nothing! :)

Having said that, the book in question was also on my TBR challenge so it was a tick off regardless.

message 515: by Donald (new)

Donald | 240 comments I'm currently at 325 points off six books.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Tuna juice is a miracle worker when you need pet friends for point padding!

message 519: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda Somehow the cat decided to snuggle up on my lap while I was reading last night, with no bribery needed!!

I suspect her feet were cold from the snow, but hey! who cares :P

No bribery, you just had to throw her out in the snow? :P

message 521: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda Maaaaybe?

I mean, she probably needed to go out anyways, right?

message 522: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments My cats are strictly indoors, but thankfully my girlcat is ALWAYS cold so she likes to snuggle up with me when I read in bed... Or anytime there's a blanket handy. Its the blanket she likes, not me.

My cat is the same, if I have the blanket over my legs she might contemplate having a nap on my lap, otherwise she will go somewhere else...

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments Benji has become very good about allowing me to cuddle while reading. For years, his idea of cuddling including playing and eating my shirt sleeves.

message 525: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments My cat (Hondo) makes a beeline for my lap every time I sit down. The other day another cat (Louis) was on my lap and he did something to create a big kerfuffle and once I got the chaos settled down I saw he had used the cover to get to my stool and wait for me.

Hondo -1
Louis - 0

Cornerofmadness | 55 comments Another question, if it's under 300 pages long (as many of my really old books are, it's amazing how much longer books have gotten in the last few decades) do they get zero points?

message 527: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Yes... no page count points if the book is less than 300 pages.

300 words is REALLY short. :P

message 528: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments and now you know why people are animal-handling their pets (to avoid the dreaded 0 points)

on the other hand, the short books allow you to quickly empty part of your TBR pile

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Hey... some of us are also keeping the tea and coffee industries in business! :P

"Crap."
"What?"
"The dog sounded like he wanted to go out, but I'm mid-fight in my book, and this book challenge has me loaded, so I got confused."
"...What do you mean? And where's the dog?"
"So...first of all, honey, remember that I've been reading these very short, old comic books all day so that I could get rid of them and make room for you, and that I love you."
"Oh, no. Where's the dog??"
"Well...I got up to let him out and get a beer for the start of the next issue. I think the dog is in the fridge, and empty may now be outside."

"You'll be glad, nay proud to know, though, that I'm getting 15 points for this, on top of clearing room for you."

LOL. I once had a roommates cat sneak into the fridge while I was getting something out. I kept looking around to find where the meowing was coming from. Never got in the fridge again.

message 548: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Woohoo, my friend took three books from my shelf, so that means I've finally started this challenge! I still haven't read anything, but the number of unread owned physical books went down. I was so happy about this that I finally decided to ask my library what type of books they'd be willing to accept. Turns out they'll take all of my MG/YA/Adult SFF in English, they said that's exactly what they need. That just leaves me the weirdo books my Mom's given me over the years, and the library said I can leave them in the recycling shelf, where someone can take them if they want them. I love the library! <3

message 550: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I was doing so well at the start, but these last few weeks I have only read books from the library or ones I've just bought... :(
