Yep! You can buy ALL THE BOOKS EVER as long as you think you'll read (or give away) all of them plus one book this year, and still get the bonus.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments OK. Finally started really diving into these numbers.

And I'm not gonna lie - these numbers do NOT really represent the true numbers of books I own. I've stopped cataloging free books so those don't pop up until I read them. And a lot of my DTBs from before I owned Book Collectorz. Which saves my life on a regular basis. i <3 Book Collectorz.

I show:

1119 books in Book Collectorz with 630 unread
403 TBR books on GR
1 book purchased in 2018 (which is not true cause I just ordered 2 special orders yesterday but I don't have them yet)

I'm aiming to read 75 books (at the min) that I already own in 2018.

ETA: Raksura

15-Jun-18- it took me about 15mins to find this stupid post!!

They keep track of a bunch of awards (not only N. Am.)

I'm reading Ghost Talkers which is nominated for the Mythopoeic award but this wasn't indicated on the other website posted upthread.

rebecca j (technophobe) | 15 comments I will try this challenge, as I am accumulating books faster than I read! (It's an addiction!) Of course this means I'll have to set up a separate shelf for books acquired in 2018, since I won't quit buying. Hopefully the points for books read will be enough to make up for the 500 I won't get for decreasing my TBR pile. I counted 349 unread on two bookshelves, and that doesn't include any of my Andre Norton collection that I haven't read.

message 461: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I think so far this challenge is kinda helping me keep my new purchases down!
I have bought a couple of books, but only if I wanted to read them straight away :)

message 462: by Cornerofmadness (new)

Cornerofmadness | 55 comments I wasn't sure if there was a folder for sharing individual books and how many points they earned (or if that's coming at the end of the year or not at all) but I decided to count just the books inside the house setting it at 300 on the shelves and 800 on the ereader.

January got me to 6 physical books read (no ebooks, I'm so slow there) for a total of 365 pts and books bought - zero.

message 463: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments This is the place to share :) Great job.

message 464: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments cripes, I'm still at 9 plus (bought 28 books and read 19)

just to be a bit mean (snickers and twirls non-existent mustache) Tor has two free books today:

https://giveaway.tor.com/?ts=t

This offer is available from 12:00 PM EST on January 30th to 12:00 PM EST on February 2nd.

message 466: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I have a question. If I already own an e-book but decide I really need the DTversion does that count as adding to my TBR shelf?

message 467: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I went nuts and bought 5 books in January - only 2 were book club reads :0(

However I did read an Agatha Christie which earned me 200 points - it maybe have been less than 300 pages but it has been on my shelf for 25 years!

message 468: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I can't remember if this has been brought up, but does re-reads count?

message 469: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments I have some questions too- and they’re kind of random:

1. I sometimes read e-galleys on sites like NetGalley and Edelweiss and win ARCs through sites like BookishFirst. Do these count as owned? I ask because A) If they do, I have some that I would get points for B) if I’m getting points then I also need to count whatever is sent to me this year against the running total of books “bought” in 2018.

My first instinct was just to ignore them as part of this. But I’m feeling guilty as I acquire them for not counting them as part of the 2018 books “bought”.

2. Books won in Giveaways: do these count against “bought” in 2018?

message 470: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Esther, no. As if you buy and read it you count it as an owned book as long as you owned the other format prior to 2018.

message 471: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Rereads don't count, no.

message 472: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I would personal count Netgalley and Eidelweiss but you can choose.

i would not count giveaways as bought since you have no control over when they arrive.

message 474: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments Ultimately, January was a wash for me. I bought/acquired 9 books total in January. I read 7 books owned in 2017 (325 points total) and 2 of the 9 I bought in 2018.

message 475: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Sarah Anne wrote: "Rereads don't count, no."

I was counting them as the digital version was a new book to me and i bought the ebooks with the intention of reading them (I'm talking about my 2017 TBR books). I'm currently reading Rebecca which I've read in paper format several times, but the digital version is in my TBR pile

I don't intend to count rereads of digital books I already own (if Rothfuss & Martin ever release the next books in their series, I will reread the earlier books before reading the new book).

message 477: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments Would a book funded through Kickstarter count as self-published?

message 478: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yes

message 479: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments Thank you.

(ka-ching!)

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments Jan 2018: bought 2 new books (merit badge pamphlets for helping the Scouts), read zero. Negative gain…

message 481: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments I am 7 read and 4 purchased. So far so good.

message 482: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I'm at 0 read. I keep moving books to the unhaul pile.

message 483: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I think I'm somewhere around 17 bought and 2 read. I suck at this.

message 484: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I acquired one, but I am not counting it because 1) it was not my choice, it was assigned work homework, and 2) it was an ebook so it is not taking up any physical space, and I've finished reading it already anyway. Though I didn't count it for the challenge because I didn't own it before 2018.

I've read 4 books that count for the challenge. So, slow, but progress in the right direction. :D

See, Sarah, how it's supposed to work? Gold star, Becky! Good work Hank! Mike...you and Sarah may need some extra tutoring on subtraction.

message 486: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Lol! I've been thinking that I would donate a bunch of books to the library and that would put me ahead. I think I only have 30 to donate though so it's not like I'll be ahead past mid-March at the rate I'm going.

Yeah, I think you really excel at addition ;-)

message 488: by Donald (new)

Donald | 240 comments I've bought a few... but I've also read (or am in the process of reading) them all, so I'm still coming out ahead for the year so far.

Having said that, I had to grab our dog and put her on my lap because my current in-progress worked out to be a grand ZERO points and that felt just... (wait for it)... pointless.

message 489: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Lol!

message 490: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments I read 5 books from my pile in January, plus I removed one from my TBR because I decided I will never read it. Countering that, I bought one, pre-ordered one, and backed one (successfully funded) on Kickstarter. So I am up 2 or 3 depending how you count.

message 491: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments I am in in real trouble. I’ve had to buy 8 since January 1st. Wrinkle in Time is one of them. The movie is coming out in March. No choice! I have read 9 books from my 2017 bookshelf. What I’ve learned about myself, I like being drowned in books. It’s comforting. All my really exciting friends are all around me. OK, now I have a voice like Peter Lorrie. I am scaring myself.

message 497: by Karin (new)

Karin (karinz) | 70 comments Recently finished 3 books in Aaron Elkins Gideon Oliver series for a total of 500 points. Grand total so far - 665 points. However, I am still at -3 for the year. Almost bought more books yesterday but luckily the two books I looked at are not yet out. I just look at all my books as a sort of retirement fund - buy now, read later.

message 498: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

I'm at neutral still. Bought two, finishing up reading a second. It's been EXTREMELY VERY TEMPTING to buy things but my library rocks so I'm trying to use them.

message 499: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I'm at 5 read and still only the work homework book added. Doing good! I should hopefully finish book 6 today.

I'm sure pupper was happy to cuddletribute to the cause.

Still, wouldn't it be impossible for a book to get zero points if you bought it in 2017 or earlier? In a lot of cases it's impossible to know exactly what date I bought something so I've just been lumping whole years together. So if I bought it in 2017 I consider it to be a year old, even though it could have been in my possession anywhere between a month or a year and a month.
