Whoa, the end of the year is quickly approaching! And I haven't completed my main challenge yet! :O Or any others!! Anyone else surprised by the end of the year?! So we're going to do a 3-week Readathon to get our challenges completed or any of those books you *meant* to get to this year, get'em read!

This Readathon will go from Sunday, Dec 10 to Sunday, 12/31 at midnight (your midnight, wherever you are in the world)!

What do you have left to read?

message 2: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments As of today, I am going to say I will try to finish 9 books. Things always get busy around the holidays! May have to reevaluate closer to the start of read-a-thon...

message 3: by Shelby (last edited Dec 07, 2017 11:49AM) (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I'm participating in a 24 hour readathon on Sat (around my work shift, so we'll see how that goes). I have a book I was saving to reread during the next readathon I participated in so I'm going to get to that book during those 24 hours. That being The Call (The Call, #1) by Peadar Ó Guilín , which has a sequel coming in March but the way my reading plans look for next year I gotta fit that reread in now if I want to get to it before book 2 is out.

Then I need to finish A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic, #3) by V.E. Schwab which is so good, but I've kept putting it off cuz I want to savor it. Now I can't savor it anymore I've gotta finish it.

I also need to read Never Fade (The Darkest Minds, #2) by Alexandra Bracken and Vicious (Villains, #1) by V.E. Schwab . I have to wait with Never Fade to get my next Scribd audio credit on the 24th so that'll probably be my last read of the year. And Vicious is the reread I've been meaning to get to since I read it summer last year. I need these two to complete my ABC Challenge so it'll be completed right at the last minute. Lol.

I'm interested to see what everyone else is planning to get to in these last few weeks.

message 4: by Lourdes (new)

Lourdes | 92 comments I have 3 more books to finish for my "Read What You Own Challenge". And plan to finish 1 book Noli Me Tángere that's been in my "Currently Reading" shelf for the past couple of months. Right now, I don't have a definite goal yet after I've finished my challenges but I'm thinking of reading one of Stephen King's long novels either The Stand or 11/22/63, some classics, Christmas theme novels or some of my favorite book series.

Although it'll be a busy 3 weeks for most of us, I'm looking forward once again to having a fun readathon before 2017 ends.

Is it easy to read? It's been in my shelf like forever. I've been wanting to read it but I get intimidated by the length and the fact that it might be one of SK's mediocre novels.

I haven't read it yet. lol. I own it! But I've read a lot of reviews on it and it seems to be pretty good!

message 11: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I read the uncut version of The Stand this year, and it's made me curious about the originally released version.

It wasn't my favuorite, but it was pretty good. I do know The Stand and The Shining are his most popular books and lots of people love The Stand the most. It was the fourth book he released, so it is one of his classics.

I really, really enjoyed "Under the Banner of Heaven" <--SO much information that I just never knew about. I think I added 4 books to my TBR list while reading that book. He is an excellent writer.

I also loved The Shack, even in the midst of the drama surrounding it. Such a beautiful story.

I am curious about "The Witches of Eastwick" I saw the movie long ago and had no idea it was a book. Hmmmm. ;-)

I also disliked 11.22.63. I was not able to finish it, so I give huge kudos to you.

message 13: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3485 comments I just realized I need to read a cozy this month in prep for a NetGalley ARC book that is due the beginning of 2018 so I need to get that done. And I currently have 7 books going, though 4 of them are devotionals [2 for Advent] and two are book club reads. I think I will hit my 200 goal this year - I have never done that before and I am pretty excited. I was able to finish my last challenge with one of my book club reads so I am also officially done with challenges [minus the RWYO here, and that will be done with 4 of the 7 currently in process].

I wish you all GREAT and speedy reading!!

message 14: by Joy (new)

Joy | 531 comments Perfect timing! I have a handful to finish, and this could help. I have Lilian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney to finish by 12/21 for a book club, and three for NetGalley:
Sisters of the Cross by Amedeo Remizov (for 12/26)
Carnegie’s Maid by Marie Benedict (for 1/1/18)
The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce (for the 1/2/19)

My favorite SK novel is The Green Mile followed by Carrie and 'Salem's Lot. They're all classic. I'm thinking of reading them again sometime next year.

I haven't read The Green Mile yet, but my favourites of his are Misery and The Tommyknockers. I also loved Dolan's Cadillac.

message 18: by Karina (new)

Karina | 1069 comments So I have finished the general challenge but I still need to read 4 books from Read What You Own and I need to finish my ABC challenge with the letters U, V, X, Y, Z. I will have to see what I have in my book shelves to incorporate the two but.
Right now I have Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks (which I bought a month ago), Villette by Charlotte Bronte also purchased this year to take care of U and V.
I also have to read a book club book for next Friday. I will update once I stalk my shelves!

Patricia | 2256 comments I have loved these challenges and reading everyone's reviews and book selections. Thanks for the inspiration!

message 20: by Alecia (new)

Alecia I am currently reading book 70, so there is no way I will finish 5 books after this one before the end of the year. So I will be just under 75.

I'm a little bogged down with Under the Banner of Heaven. :/ There's A LOT of information. Holy cow. lol. Definitely want to read Into Thin Air soon. I've read one other account of the Everest disaster and it was really good. The movie was good too!

Oh dear, what's the drama surrounding The Shack?! I picked it instead of another Y author [Jane Yolen] because it was 30 pages shorter. lol

I'm looking forward to reading The Witches of Eastwick!

OMG I should have abandoned 11.22.63. You had the right idea. Took me a month and a half to read!!! It was just not engrossing and I was so disappointed.

message 22: by Charleen (last edited Dec 31, 2017 06:14PM) (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Alright, so...

* I have to read 42 more books to reach my big goal. DONE!!!

* I have to read 1 more book to reach my "not-comics-or-rereads" goal. DONE!!!

* I have to read 6 more books to reach the gold level for my library's yearly reading challenge. DONE!!!

As for specific books, I'm in the middle of The Caped Crusade: Batman and the Rise of Nerd Culture, and I have The Last One checked out from the library right now. I'm also diving into the Ultimate Marvel universe (as you can see on my main thread); if I actually hit 150, it will be all thanks to that.

I need to take another look at the categories for my library challenge and see which books on my TBR will fit... or if I'm just going to wing it.

message 23: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments 24-hr Readathon is complete, and with that I've also finished my reread of The Call (The Call, #1) by Peadar Ó Guilín

This was even better the second time around. I'm so glad I was able to get to this. It's such a unique blend of the dystopian, horror, and fantasy genres and I can't wait for book 2.

Joy | 531 comments I didn’t have a very good first day. I read a total of 14 pages, and that happened after midnight, before I went to sleep. I spent a lot of the day reading student papers. I think there should be a way to count those pages :)
Final exams start tomorrow, so it may be a slim Readathon for me.

message 26: by Shelby (new)

❤Marie Gentilcore (rachelx) | 99 comments As of today, I've got 14 books to read in 20 days! I don't know if I can do it but I'm going to give it a good try. I'm adding in some novellas and some books I had started but didn't finish. If anyone has suggestions for a good novella, please let me know. Thanks!

Marie, Fredrik Backman has 2 excellent novellas, one of them a Christmas one!

message 32: by ❤Marie (new)

❤Marie Gentilcore (rachelx) | 99 comments Thank you Elyse! I will look for those.

I just finished The Girl Next Door by Elizabeth Noble. 4/5 Womens fiction. 13 more to go!

message 33: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments Read 25 more pgs yesterday of A Conjuring of Light. I have very little time to read this week because I have so many things up so hopefully I can finish everything by the end of the year.

message 34: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments 47 pgs in A Conjuring of Light today. I'd like to get at least halfway through by the end of the week which might just be doable.

message 35: by Lori (new)

Lori I think I need to read about 30 books to finish my challenge for the year. If I only listen to audio books and not watch any TV or work I just might make it, lol. I don't have specific names of books to read but I am down to 2 on my bedside table and I have about 2000 sitting on my kindle so I have plenty of choices.
Last night I finished The Trouble with Twelfth Grave and I loved it!! Then I started Coming Home for Christmas by Jenny Hale. I've been listening to The Last Move by Mary Burton. I hope to finish my audio book tomorrow and kindle book maybe tomorrow? I will have to see how this night goes.

I'll probably finish Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir audio today as I have a few hours of driving to do.

I'm about 25-30% done with Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith and I think I'll be just skimming the rest. There's just too much information, it's exhausting! It started out interesting enough but now I'm just overwhelmed.

I'd really like to dig in to A Treacherous Curse tonight!!

message 37: by Lourdes (new)

Lourdes | 92 comments I finished Whispering Rock last night and started reading Inn Keeping with Murder as the final read in my RWYO challenge for this year.

I read a little bit of Noli Me Tángere last night on our way home from work. I'm about 42% done with this book.

❤Marie Gentilcore (rachelx) | 99 comments It's amazing what one can do when you put your mind to it. I've been able to read 5 books/novellas in the last 4 days so now I have 8 more to go to make my 2017 101 book challenge. What I read:
89. One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter – Scaachi Koul 3.5/5
90. Free Four: Tobias Tells the Divergent Story 4/5
91. A Room of One’s Own – Virginia Woolf – 3/5
92. The Deal of a Lifetime – Fredrik Backman 3.5/5 (Thanks for the suggestion Elyse)
93.The Chimes – Charles Dickens 3/5

I finished Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith this morning. Such a slog.

I started The Music Shop this morning. I also started Because It Is My Blood audio this morning. I have the CDs for it but honestly do not own a CD player anymore! My laptop doesn't even have a CD drive! lol. So I will be listening to it during my commutes only. Then I will be listening to The Silver Linings Playbook audio at home and shopping. lol.

I removed Rise and Shine and Elsewhere for my ABC Author Challenge and switched to The Silver Linings Playbook audio and Because It Is My Blood audio because right now I have more audiobook time!

I added the 3 Penguin ARCs I have to review by Dec 31; The Music Shop, Death Below Stairs, Enchantress of Numbers. Totally swamping myself! lol

message 49: by ❤Marie (new)

❤Marie Gentilcore (rachelx) | 99 comments Shelby, thank you for the suggestion about X: A Short Story. I downloaded it but I may save it for next year for the ABC Titles Challenge :)

I am finally caught up with my 2017 reading challenge and have 4 more to go to reach my goal of 101 books. I finished reading the following:
94. Gather Round the Sound by Various Authors 2/5
95. Jacob T. Marley by William R Bennett 5/5
96. Let it Snow - Maureen Johnson, John Green, Lauren Myracle - 3/5
97. The Memory Quilt: A Christmas Story for Our Times by TD Jakes - 2/5

I just started War Cross by Marie Lu and Comfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah.

Reading another shorty, Liberty for "steampunk" prompt for another challenge.

Almost done with The Silver Linings Playbook. Will hopefully finish tonight.

I'm now only 8 books from my Goodreads challenge! :)
