Hello Brenda! Nice to see you. We're reading Regency Buck at the moment, which is both romance and mystery. We're all being rather hard on it, though.

Betsie Ann | 20 comments Hello all!
I'm Betsie Ann, a very new member, and Georgette Heyer is one of my favorite authors. Her books are comfort reads for me and remind me of pleasant memories each time I pick one up. Arabella was my first, and what a delightful way to begin my Heyer journey! However, my favorite out of the entirety of Heyer's oeuvre, is The Conqueror.

Why do you like The Conqueror? I haven't read it.

Betsie Ann | 20 comments Jackie wrote: "Hi, Betsie, and Welcome!

Oh boy, this could get lengthy, but I'll try to keep it short!
I was surprised when I first read it because it was more complicated and definitely harder to follow compared to any of her other books that I'd read, and the history behind the story fascinated me. So that's part of it, but every time I reread The Conqueror I am impressed anew by the depth of the characters, and the timeless themes. The main character, Roual, in particular was interesting to me, because as one of the few fictional people in the story, he gave me insight into how Georgette Heyer thought about history, and what character traits and motivations she found admirable.
I highly recommend it, but what is your favorite Heyer book? That might give me a clue as to whether it would be your cup of tea!

message 624: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2186 comments I'M impressed you've read it and reread it!!! Much as I love her books I couldn't get through that one.

Betsie Ann | 20 comments Teresa wrote: "I'M impressed you've read it and reread it!!! Much as I love her books I couldn't get through that one."

I understand. I was put off by it at first, and I kept peeking at the cover to confirm it really was written by Georgette Heyer-- it was that different from all the others!

message 626: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1728 comments wow, my favorite is probably The Grand Sophy. Maybe The Reluctant Widow.

Betsie Ann | 20 comments Jackie wrote: "wow, my favorite is probably The Grand Sophy. Maybe The Reluctant Widow."

I like those too. Georgette Heyer is my happy place when it comes to reading, so I haven't found any yet that I dislike, only there are some that are a level above. I would say The Conqueror falls into the category of 'heavy' fiction, and that isn't everyone's favorite. That time in history got a bit gruesome at times.

Bartholomew Vaughen | 2 comments I'm Barty, I'm in undergrad right now, & I just read my first Georgette Heyer Book, The Corinthian, and I really liked it.

Growing up, my mother was an English Teacher, but now, I don't read as much as I used to, so I'm looking for recommendations!

Some of my favorite books include: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen; The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor; The Portrait of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde, & The Scapegoat by Daphne du Maurier.
