I read this as a child probably around 12 years ago (I Think it was new then, as it was pride of place in a chain bookstore). That edition was hardcover, with a picture of a dark, stormy night on the dust jacket. It was about a young male fairy who got stuck in the normal world as a result of a storm; he was hidden in what I think may have been a tin can or something similar during the storm, and was named after the first word he ever heard. I know it's vague, but I've been trying to work it out for ages and nobody else remembers me ever having a copy!

It's only ten years old, but from what I gathered by googling, What-the-Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy by Gregory Maguire might be your book. Its cover matches, and apparently the tooth fairy called What-the-Dickens is found in a tin can.
