2018 Bingo Reading Challenge!
Ok, I have updated the graph to reflect the latest information in the brainstorming thread. Here is the 2018 Group Challenge Spreadsheet!Instructions:
1) Enter your name in the list on the Intro tab (or double check that I got it right!)
2) Choose a numbered tab for your own, they have all been randomized, and change the name to your own name (match what is on the Intro tab.)
3) You can update categories now, 8 maximum across all boards except the Alphabet board. Just type the new category over the old one, it should highlight in red text that it is changed.
4) Enter your books as you complete them starting in row 17 on your tab.
5) You can change your colors if you want, let me know if you need help with that. Just don't change the white cells below and to the right of each board, those are used for calculations.
I will wait to claim a tab till the end and can make more if needed.
Have fun!
P.S., if you see something that doesn't look right, please let me know and I will try to get it fixed.
P.P.S., the FREE category shows up in the dropdown list but you don't need to select it to get points for it.
edit: spelling
I claimed the first tab. Who knows if its a good one or not. :PIs there any timeframe in which we need to update our categories or can we wait and see until we're mostly done?
I'd like to see how much I can actually research without just killing a few that are harder to seek out.
Claimed tab 2. Now need to have a think about category changes. Does a change impact on the scoring, or has that idea been dropped?
I don't think we talked about a time-frame for changes. I certainly won't change them until I have to, I know of a few categories that I will change but not what I will change them to yet. I will probably choose categories from last year or the BookRiot challenge to replace them with when I get there though.Changing a category does not impact scoring, there is just a limit of 8 total changes.
I've changed a few, and it says at the top of the bingo cards that points have been deducted, though it doesn't seem to have affected the scoring table.Another clever spreadsheet Dazrin. Well done!
I am amazed at your skills with the spreadsheets Dazrin, it would have taken me forever! ( If I'd even managed to do it at all...)

I forgot I had those in there, I originally did this based on the 2 / board option and then deducting points after that. I have removed them now.
Another clever spreadsheet Dazrin. Well done!"

Thank you! I think it's fun to do this kind of thing.
Updated the 2018 Bingo thread, let me know if its missing something, or if what i wrote doesnt make sense :P
I'm in awe at Dazrin's skills as well. Very impressive and much appreciated.I need a ruling on one of my book choices as it is going to determine if I need to use up the last replacement category I have.
Is Ben Aaronovitch valid for an author with my name (Aaron)?
I just realized I changed my first post to pretty much duplicate Dazrins post later... *sigh*I think I need to get more sleep, my brain isn't keeping up :P
HomeInMyShoes wrote: "Is Ben Aaronovitch valid for an author with my name (Aaron)"I would say yes.
To be honest I might have to resort to Maggie, which was my "name" in England as they couldn't pronounce my actual (very Norwegian) name. Unless I decide to scrap that one for one of my own :)
Thank you! Since everyone else that is confirmed has taken a number, I am skipping a few and taking #8 just because I can. I will try to keep about 5 unused boards available for others (at least through the first of the year.)
As for new categories, I think instead of making up my own, I will borrow some of the ones others have entered. I'm leaning towards the thriller type ones (war, serial killer, hitman) so far.
If you need a book for "bugs" you might try Wicked Bugs: The Louse That Conquered Napoleon's Army & Other Diabolical Insects and you can cross off micro-history and insects while you are at it. Possibly even zombies, it's been a while. (view spoiler)
I wish all of you great success in your Bingo endeavors! I will gladly watch from the sidelines and cheer you all on. :)
^Good find, but I just removed bugs from my challenge to solve that.I removed:
Cover: Bugs
Genre: LBGTQ; Micro-History
Mega: Love Triangle; Set in Future; Set Outside Earth; Steamy Romance; Super-natural powers
It is looking like I will need to read 50 books to finish the challenge, but I might be able to get it to the 48 minimum.
I am very curious to see what everyone else removes.

I agree, too.
HomeInMyShoes wrote: "It is looking like I will need to read 50 books to finish the challenge, but I might be able to get it to the 48 minimum."That would be impressive.
I did add a "these are the categories I removed" section to the sheet today; it's next to the book list now. I was looking at what others had changed and since I randomized everything I couldn't figure out what was missing. :)

I'm curious to know what it is :) One of my daughters is named Dagny, which is Norwegian (as I'm sure you know), and people here in the UK don't know how to pronounce it most of the time.
Regarding the bingo cards, I'm glad you have included a template tab, which allows us to check what we have changed, so that maybe we can revert if we change our mind.
Orlok wrote: "Regarding the bingo cards, I'm glad you have included a template tab, which allows us to check what we have changed, so that maybe we can revert if we change our mind."Rather than comparing to the template (which is hard since each board is in a random order), there is now a list starting in row 18, columns N through R, that shows what categories you have replaced from which board.
Hopefully this is easier.
@Orlok - yes, Dagny is also a very Norwegian name :) May I ask what made you chose that?Mine is Magnhild
I think I might struggle to pronounce yours, actually :) It's lovely.I chose Dagny from the protagonist Dagny Taggart in Atlas Shrugged, which I read in my late teens, and was struck by the name. My other two daughters have names from Greek mythology - there's no accounting for taste :D
My daughter, Anwyn, was named before we even knew if we would have children. My husband heard it on the NPR show Car Talk. We can’t believe, however, how many people have difficulty pronouncing her name.
My eldest is called Antigone. The mispronunciations are legion, the most common being "An-tie-gon". We call her Tiggy :)
Yes to An-win. :) She had a teacher who insisted on calling her Antwon (Ant-wand without the “d”).Is your daughter’s name pronounced An-tea-gone?
DoodlePanda wrote: "@Orlok - yes, Dagny is also a very Norwegian name :) May I ask what made you chose that?Mine is Magnhild"
Magnhild Haalke
Our sons are Fynn and Leif. Relatively straight-forward, although Leif has three pronounciations depending on where one is from.
Orlok wrote: "My eldest is called Antigone. The mispronunciations are legion, the most common being "An-tie-gon". We call her Tiggy :)"I've always pronounced it "Ann-Tig-On-Ne"

Never heard of that author xD
MrsJoseph wrote: "I've always pronounced it "Ann-Tig-On-Ne""Yes, exactly. An-tig-on-ee might be a different way of representing it. She was a Greek tragic hero who was entombed after going against the king's wishes and burying her brother. I'm beginning to wonder why I chose it now... :)
I've got my American friends to thanks for me calling myself Pete. My full name is obviously Peter. Simple enough, you'd have thought, but when I moved to Baton Rouge with my family when I was a tender 18 yo, I used to introduce myself as Peter when I met new people. I couldn't understand why I got a similar reaction almost every time. "Peter?" they'd say. Then giggle. Took me quite a while to work out what was going on :)
I'm not a huge fan of nicknames (unless they have specific meaning to the people who use them) or making names shorter. I told my family that under no circumstances should my son, James, be called Jim, or Jimmy. His name is James!
To clarify about the FREE spot on each board - FREE shows up in the drop-down for each category but does NOT need to be selected in order to get the points. It can be but that doesn't do anything for you. I didn't have a way to exclude it and still have the conditional formats work at the time. I think I have a way to get rid of it without messing up the formatting now though, so let me know if you want me to do that on your tab.
I'm fine either way. FREE showing up just means one more book to read on the Mega square so the minimum becomes 49 and it should be pretty much non-affecting for the other boards because the first repeat or non-match will get rubbed out way before anyone comes close to finishing the 48 items on the Mega board.
I want to join, just need to figure out how to use the spreadsheet (which is very impressive indeed!
Marte - Thunderella wrote: "I want to join, just need to figure out how to use the spreadsheet (which is very impressive indeed!"On the bottom of the spreadsheet you see the names of the people that has joined on tabs, any tab with a number is free so just doubleclick on the tab you want and replace the number with your name :)
When you have claimed a tab you can add the books you have read on the list on the spreadsheet under the bingo cards and select the items it will cover in the drop downs next to it (you can look at my tab to see how i filled it out for my first book)
DoodlePanda wrote: "On the bottom of the spreadsheet you see the names of the people t..."Thanks! I'll try it out.
DoodlePanda wrote: "When you have claimed a tab you can add the books you have read on the list on the spreadsheet under the bingo cards and select the items it will cover in the drop downs next to it (you can look at my tab to see how i filled it out for my first book) "Is it correct that although you've added a book, there is no points score showing on your sheet or on the front page? Am I misunderstanding how the scoring works?
It's bingo so you only get points when you fill in a line (or the border or the whole thing). 5 pts for the first bingo, another 5 for the second, 15 for the border, and 25 for the whole board. Double that for the mega-mix board.

You "cross out" the different things as you complete them, and get points for first and second bingo (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal), the frame and the whole board. You can use each book only once on each board, but you can use each book on several/all boards.
You have the option to change some of the categories, up to a maximum of 8 across all boards except the alphabet board. (Type the old category over the old one in your tab). This can be done at any time during the challenge and will not affect your score.
Link to Bingo Boards here!
You will need to enter your name in the list in the Intro tab, then claim one of the numbered tabs as your own. Change the number to your name (needs to match whats on the Intro tab)
Enter your books as you read starting in row 17 in your tab, and assign them to the different boards where they fit.
Thanks to Dazrin all the points will be calculated automatically! :D
There is a maximum of 300 points!
Good luck and happy reading! :D
