Congratulations to DoodlePanda for being the first to get a Bingo!Update on the spreadsheet, I have updated my tab to allow me to plan ahead a little. It will not count anything until I enter a finish date for each row so that I can enter books and categories when I start a book (or put it in my immediate queue) but that book won't count on my board until I finish the book. It will still indicate duplicate categories though (not that they matter). (You can see what it does by entering a completion date for one of the grayed out books on my list if you want.)
I will update the other tabs over the next few days, I want to make sure I don't have any bugs first. Let me know if you don't want me to update your tab. It does mean that the Date column is now required. I will guess on a date for any books in there when I make this change that don't have dates.
Sounds like a nice plan. I've got my own spreadsheet for plotting what I'm doing though. I've actually got three spreadsheets for tracking the same thing in different ways.Congratulations DoodlePanda.
Thanks :DI was completely by accident as I didn't keep an eye on what would be needed to complete the bingo!

Congrats, Doodle! :D :D
I have updated everyone's sheets, let me know if you see anything that looks like a mistake. Marte - Thunderella, I added a date for the last two books on your list. If those were intentionally blank you can remove them.

Congratulations DoodleP..."
I only have this one and my normal spreadsheet which has a copy that automatically fills in as I add books to my list. I just copy from that to this.
Thank you, Dazrin! They were empty since I hadn't finished them when I last updated the spreadsheet. Now I have, so I just changed the dates to today and yesterday to make it fit with my finished dates.I noticed the text has changed to a lighter color now? I tried adding a date, and then it switched to black text color. Is it intentional, so to see which book doesn't have a finished date?
Yes, I think so. It's lighter until you put a finishing date on to indicate you've finished the book :)
DoodlePanda wrote: "Yes, I think so. It's lighter until you put a finishing date on to indicate you've finished the book :)"A nice detail!
Marte - Thunderella wrote: "Thank you, Dazrin! They were empty since I hadn't finished them when I last updated the spreadsheet. That way you can tell at a glance which books aren't included in your score yet. Same for the light green highlighting in the boards.
Ten books in and I still haven't finished a row on any sheet?Alpha: 10
Cover: 8
Genre: 9
Item: 10
Mega: 10
Good progress, but no points.
That's the hope. Although I appear to have misplaced my bottom of the TBR pile selection and which was also my fairytale/myth selection.
Thanks for the update to the main page Dazrin. "Total Completed Items" is way more indicative of how people are doing.Only 92 more items to go.

You're welcome!
It does give a better feel for how much total progress has been made - or maybe efficiency. It would be fun to see someone with a smaller total have more points for a little while at least.
So I just realized that the alphabet Bingo card reads "Title has a word that starts with..."
:P
^I should be fine either way, but I'll probably finish the alphabet card faster with having things like Ema the Captive counting for C instead of E. E appears to be the popular starts with letter for me this year.
If we all agree on doing that, then it's fine :)I'm still doing my A-Z challenge so it doesn't make much of a difference to me :)
As I said, I already picked my list of books to read and barring not being able to get my hands on a couple of the titles, I'll finish the alphabet card either way. Looking at the spreadsheet I belive Dazrin and Orlok might be negatively affected by interpretation.I much prefer the any word starting with option. Alphabet challenges have been around for many years in a row and some letters are getting quite hard to find anything interesting in now.
I vote leave it easier.
Did I mess that one up? If it was originally "title starts with" I wonder if I changed that to "word that starts with" from a previous alphabet challenge. Hmmm. Do we want to change it? I personally don't but if others do, I can live with it. If it is "title starts with" I will have problems. I didn't finish the challenge using "word that starts with" either and "title" is much harder.
I am ignoring "of", "the", etc., so Thief of Time doesn't get to use "O" allowing The Two Towers to use "T".
Agreed on the, of, a, an, etc. Although if someone wants to use them, I don't care. It is kind of like my geography challenge. Some people just use set in a place and I look for an author from a place. Whatever people want to rationalize is fine. The goal should be to get people to try a few things off their normal reading trajectory, but not have to totally uproot what they read.

It isn't like there is a million bucks for whoever "wins" this, it's just a fun way to get myself to read something different.
I thought the challenge was "Title starts with..." and was recording it that way, then I saw it had changed to "Word starts with...". I actually prefer the "Title starts with" challenge, because it's, well, more challenging. t would only affect one of my scores so far, so it's not an issue. That said, I'm happy to go with the consensus.
I don't think there is consensus because no one really cares that much."What do you wanna do? I don't know, what do you wannt do? I don't know but we should do something." :P
I will suggest that we avoid the alphabet in the challenge next year as a couple of years of it is probably enough for a while.
I'm still waiting for last year's prize money. Tick, tick... ~cough~
LOL!I vote we leave it as it is, it wasn't meant to be a massively difficult challenge, especially since the mega-bingo might take a bit of effort anyways :)
Like I said, I'm still doing my A-Z separately, so I'd probably complete it either way, but it seems fine to me to leave it as is. I'm not going to count "a", "the", "of" and words like that either.

I'm with you on that. Let's go with it as it is.
Dazrin wrote: "Bingo! 12 books, 1 bingo. Not a great percentage but I'll take it."Congratulations. You managed to beat my 11 book run of futility as well.
Is there a simple way to unreplace a category in the spreadsheet? I removed historical fiction, but managed to read one accidentally... xD
Just put back the name into one of the changed ones. It has worked for me. spelling and capitalization matter, but the list of switched categories on your tab helps get that right. If you type if correctly it should disappear from that section.
HomeInMyShoes wrote: "Just put back the name into one of the changed ones. It has worked for me. spelling and capitalization matter, but the list of switched categories on your tab helps get that right. If you type if c..."Thanks! I'll give that a go :)
Update: It worked! :D
It looks like the FREE category counts towards your total items value so mark them and get some extra points everyone. It didn't seem to affect scoring a blackout on a card though.
I wasn't sure but have been claiming them anyway, if nothing else fit. Good to hear I haven't been spinning my wheels.
I think you dont have to mark them to have them count towards the bingo/blackout, but they do count on the "total" score (x/144)
I wasn't sure if I should include them or not. My personal spreadsheet has it so it doesn't matter, but I don't think it's going to matter really. One free book for the megamix board is nice. I'm getting close to reading books that don't count for anything now.I might be reworking some of those categories again to allow more books I read with my son to count towards that card.
I found a good one. I hope he like it. It is so hard to find non-US children's books:
The Jumbies (Trinidad and Tobago)
Do the drop-downs include Free? I thought I removed that. I didn't bother excluding it from the score since they weren't in the drop-down, so if you use them you will get more than the 144 indicated on the scorecards (on the front I didn't list the max, so it doesn't matter.) Not a big deal but if you do use Free, then don't plan on stopping at 144... :)
It looks like they are there.149 would be a blackout on every card, but whatever. In the end, I don't think the free space is going to cause anyone not to finish, unless you can only read 48 books in a year and 49 would just not be possible in the timeframe.
The 300 score seems to be working correctly.
I think I'm going to delete my use of FREE on the dropdowns because I like the dozen-dozens score for completion. There's something nice about that kind of number.
Personally I wouldn't use it. I'd wait to see if something better comes up - plenty of time to go still :) - and I'd only use it later as a last resort. But that's just me.
Let's talk DNFs: how many do we get? Like, can I DNF a book but not use the "DNF" bingo space but still get credit for it - if it fits anything?
MrsJoseph wrote: "Let's talk DNFs: how many do we get? Like, can I DNF a book but not use the "DNF" bingo space but still get credit for it - if it fits anything?"I would have thought so, but it's Doodles' challenge, so over to her...
