message 51: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Ah, great, Alannah. Wonderful inputs. Here's what I thought:

Female authors:
The Female Quixote by Charlotte Lennox (1752 - UK)
Male authors:
Michael Kohlhaas by Heinrich von Kleist (1810 - Germany)
British and Irish authors:
The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells (1896 - UK)
American authors:
The Leavenworth Case by Anna Katharine Green (1878 - USA)
Authors from the rest of the world:
Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov (1859 - Russia)
Favourite classic from your school or university days:
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (there are many, though)

Obviously you don't have to consider all of them, just the ones you feel would make a good group read. I have tons of ideas for our classics group read(s) :)

They are all great suggestions, I was thinking to myself that I would like to read more from the 18th century. Thanks Marina.

Pink Those categories look good to me. Enough to give us a focus, but flexible enough for lots of choices. I do struggle to remember what suggestions have already been given on these new format threads, but I'll have a think about it.

It's time to start thinking about the next group read and I would like to start with Male authors.
So far, we already have Marina's suggestion of Michael Kohlhaas by Heinrich von Kleist
I would like to throw in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Does anyone else have any ideas?

Yes, I just realised that I missed yours sorry and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has already been done, I just realised after I posted that and I decided to change my nomination for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for the next one which will be classics you studied in school/university.

So the poll has resulted in a tie between One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Phantom of the Opera. If everyone is happy, we can do one for July-August and the other for September-October. What one would everyone like to read first?

message 67: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Clarke (alannahclarke) | 14704 comments Mod
That being said, we could just pick one, and the book that doesn't get chosen can be put into another poll in the future.

message 68: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 129 comments Haha well those were both my suggestions so I am happy with either!

message 69: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've read both, so I won't be reading along - sorry!

That's no problem Marina, however you are still welcome to comment your thoughts when the threads are set up.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn’t vote but I’d be interested in reading both. I’d like to read Phantom but would be better for me in September as I should have finished my les mis read by then

I would prefer that too Heather. I'm out at the minute but will set up the thread when I'm home.

I want to read this one at some point Adrian! Let me know if you want to do a buddy read - maybe there are others in the group interested too.

Hi Greg, my apologies in that I have only just seen your message above. Yes I'd be happy to do a buddy read of 2001, although probably the New Year ? Let me know your thoughts.

I've read all three of them, and re-read The Metamorphosis for the third time just a few weeks ago, so I will definitely join if it wins.

I used to teach The Metamorphosis. I love it. I think it is so funny. I used to laugh hysterically with tears coming down my cheeks whenever I read certain passages with my students. The students would look at me horrified that I would find it funny. They just didn't see the humor. Or maybe they were right--I guess I have a warped sense of humor.

Regardless, if it wins the poll, I'll read it again and look forward to joining the discussion.
