Sounds like I'll Trade You an Elk.
It's a Wild Life: How My Life Became a Zoo (2014) by Bud DeYoung turned up while searching, but appears be too recent. The zoo is located in Michigan and has been open to public since 1988.
Leann, around what year did you read this book? (Noted the time period of the story is before the 1960s.)
This is an autobiography, not fiction?

thanks for helping me look, I read it in the last 8 years sometime but it was a old used book I picked up at a sale somewhere.. I am not sure but I would view it as a nonfiction..I am guessing it was in the 30s but I dont remeber why I think that.. I will definatly check out that book tho, even if it is not the one I am looking for, I am sure I will enjoy it! thank you

because they talk about moving the alligators once it is cold and they are in an inanimate state, to a storage area under the lion cages. I am sure it is set before the 1960s.
