My target for the year is 12 books. Seeing as I am in college right now, it is hard to read for pleasure when most of the books I read are for school.

In any case, I hope you'll enjoy participating in this group. It has a lot of great challenges, the monthly group and buddy reads are real fun or you could check out the twin reads. Just have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

Hi Jean Daniel, welcome to the group! I think you have come to the right place. At least, for me, joining this group in 2017 was a real help to get me to read more/get back into reading after a reading slump of many years. I started out with a tentative goal of 12 books too, upped it to 24 during the year and ended up reading 46 books!!! All thanks to this group, the great challenges, the awesome group and buddy reads and last but certainly not least, the amazing group members who were always supportive, motivating and encouraging. I hope you'll have a similar experience. In any case I hope you'll have fun participating. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Anne | 3 comments Hello! I have been an avid reader my entire life, but lately I have not been reading as much. I downloaded a few books on my Kindle and I am always interested in book recommendations. My goal for 2018 is a minimum of 1 to 2 books per month 😊. I like pretty much anything, SyFy and suspense are probably my favorite with historical fiction a close second.

There are a lot of great challenges which may help you reach your goal. Also the monthly group and buddy reads are always fun and interesting. Just have a look around and see what interests you. Have fun! And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Jenny | 4 comments Hello!! I’m Jenny, I’m 17 and I’m from the South of England. It’s nice to meet you all :)

I’m a big fan of fantasy (I blame Potter) and YA fiction, but I also love classics, due to studying a fair few in English, and I’m moving more into adult fiction. However, I’m up for reading most things.

I’ve been an avid reader since I was a kid, but stopped reading unless it was for school, a couple of years ago. In 2017, I made it one of my new year resolutions to read more books, my goal being set high at 50 (the most I’ve ever read in one year). Not only did I complete my goal, but I gained back my reading mojo and my love for books. I decided to set my goal a little higher this year by reading 100 books.

Happy reading!! Xx

Hello! I'm Mallory and I'm a 15-year-old from the Midwestern United States. It's nice to meet everyone!

My main genre is fantasy, mostly because of Harry Potter. I read them for the first time when I was 11 years and that's when I really got into reading lots of books and started collecting books. I also really love romance and cute contemporary novels. I am a hopeless romantic, those these books really give me the feels. I'm really excited to have found this group. I was shown Goodreads last year by my English teacher, and it was shown to be my saving grace, since nobody around really reads as much as I do.

Lately, I hadn't been reading a whole lot, so I set my goal a little lower than usual, at 30 books. I can't wait to join all of these challenges and meet a bunch of new people that love to read just as as much as I do!

PARESH AJMERA (pareshpajmera) | 1 comments Hi guys,
I am Paresh and am from part of planet earth called India. I have always been interested in making human identity an enjoyable one despite the diversities it is always surrounded by. Be they geographical, linguistic, cultural, communal, etc. Any traditionally regressive idea of humanity is repulsive to me. So basically my challenge is not just about reading and forgetting or just achieving targets but also about taking part in evolutionary aspects of entire humanity through sheer entertainment (whether fantastical or provocative or extreme or naked or thrilling or evil or whatever), intellectual thought processes (scholarly non-fiction or autobiographical or academic or documentary or historical or science fiction or medical or whatever), etc. that reading offers, appreciating and being word-smiths.
My contributions will be in the above direction.
I hope to find like-minded readers in this group.
Thanks for accepting me as a member.
All the best to all the challengers in this group.
Paresh.

message 973: by Khaliyah (new)

Khaliyah Monay (khaliyahmonay) Hi my name is Khaliyah I'm from New Jersey.

I love to read but lately I've been listening to audible books and it's amazing to hear them. It's very different but I love. However still tangibly holding onto a book is amazing.

Because I'm in school, reading books for my leisure is hard at times. That is why I've fallen off but I still collect books whenever I'm out and I see a sale. I love fiction, non-fiction, romance, drama, mystery/thriller, sci-if fantasy, poetry, Christian fiction, etc. Honestly, if the description intrigues me or the first chapter/prelude which I typically read before purchasing a book if I have time then I'll read it.

My goal for 2018 is to read about 10 books. I know it's a low number but again I'm in college so textbooks are what I read most days.

I wish everyone else success with their goals this year and I hope that one day I can set a goal as high as some of the ones I've seen.

I enjoy YA, science fiction, and fantasy, but I will read anything that she lends me to read.

message 977: by Robbin (last edited Jan 16, 2018 07:53PM) (new)

Robbin Morgan (robbin0203) | 17 comments Hello Everyone!

My name is Robbin and I live in South Central Pennsylvania in the United States.

I am pretty eclectic in my reading and find myself reading Scifi/fantasy to historical fiction to biographies and mystery.

This year I would like to delve deeper into the works of one of my favorite Authors and worlds and that is JRR Tolkien and his world of Ea/Arda (Middle earth is the continent in the world not the world itself). Thus I will be reading alot of his works but I'm also sure I'll take some time off to read other things.

My goal is small at only 12 books a year as I've rather gotten out of the habit due to being a student in both College and graduate school and reading for fun (that isn't science related) is still coming back into my daily life again.

I'm rather friendly so please don't hesitate to add me as a friend or start a conversation if you see something interesting on my list/ updates

I can't wait to become part of this reading community!!

Robbin

Hi! ♡ My name is Rachel and I'm from western Canada, in the province of Alberta.

I like reading mostly historical fiction and YA novels, but I'll read anything that sounds interesting! Currently, my reading goal is 6 books because I'm a slow reader, but I hope to reach 18 by the end of the year.

message 985: by Asad (new)

Asad Irfan (asad393) Hi everyone, I am from Peshawar, Pakistan. I was an avid reader when I was kid, I gave up reading because my school books were a mess, though I only got not only good but great grades throughout my academic career. I started out with personal development books like "The Slight Edge" by "Jeff Olson" and others like " How to Think and Get Rich " but honestly, these books are great but boring at the same time. So I was introduced to this concept of "Novel" reading, not in literal meaning of it but figurative. So I read "Fault in our Stars" and I absolutely loved the dimensions of thoughts of Mr. John Green and how good he was at making people feel sad ! So I decided to read " The Kite Runner " and was amazed to know that Mr. Sohrab is going to be good in a while.

I really am not sure about which books I should read next ! The book thief is on list but I will be glad to hear suggestions from you guys.

And yes, my reading goal is 50 Books this year, which was 0 last year ! And I have read 4/50 books so far !

Thanks alot ! Bye

weaverannie | 60 comments Hello everyone. Today I found his group and have been reading messages. I must say I'm a bit overwhelmed by the number of messages, and don't expect I'll be able to read them all. But I'll try to keep up with the news.
I have been on Goodreads for a few years, was a member of Shelfary before this.
I am known as weaverannie, live in the Netherlands (about 40 km north of Amsterdam) and am old. Which means a lot older than most of you are. (73)
I have always loved reading. My favorite books are thrillers, feelgood, non-fiction, historical novels - actually none of those is my favorite: I like variety. I read books in English, Dutch and german, and very rarely in French.
Last year I read 111 books, just because I liked that number. For this year I set my goal at 70 books, but will increase if necessary during the year.

Next to the challenges you might get an idea of what to read next from the monthly group and buddy reads.
This month we're reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and next month it will be The Lightning Thief.
An overview of the buddy reads planned so far is here.
You can sign up (or propose a buddy read yourself) here.

Yes it can be rather overwhelming. But remember, you do not have to read everything. At a certain point you will know what sort of messages interest you and which don't. For example, where the challenges are concerned, I only read the messages in the threads/challenges that I joined myself.

I have been on Goodreads for a few years, was a member of Shelfary before this.

Victoria Ray (raynotbradbury) Hey! My name is Victoria/from Sweden...and I've started (renewed my account on Goodreads) in december 2017, and I'm planning to read at least 50 books in 2018. I can read more but I think 50 is good enough for me in the beginning.
I'm choosing the books I like or those I bought in the local bookshop. But I've got a strange message on my page today -> "Note: Some of our members have reported that not all read dates are showing on this page, and some recently finished books are not appearing on the Reading Challenge. While we work to fix this issue, you can still view your read dates on your review or on the book page."
I dont understand what does it mean? I can't read the books I want..or should I add them first and then read? I mean its kinda complicated a bit. I just want to read the books I want to read, without following a "special lists" (if there's any).
mmmm. what you think? any help?

Hi Victoria, yes you can read whatever you want, there’s no special list. The message refers to a bug in the yearly reading challenge tracker. Normally when you are reading a book, finish it and mark it as read, it is automatically added to your reading challenge. But now it isn’t. So say you’re at 4 books read and you finish your 5th one, the reading challenge still shows 4 books read.

Hi Victoria welcome to the group. According to your home page you have read 5 books, but I know that I have been having issues with my own page I was told by goodreads to make sure I have a date finished set on all my books to count and to try using my books in review pages since that seems to be accurate.

hope this helps. Again welcome and happy reading.

Cecil Hello! I'm Cecilia and I'm from Ohio. I just saw this group when I was browsing and ended up joining on impulse.

I picked up reading again a couple years ago after not really doing so for a few years and pretty much ended up re-discovering my love for fantasy/sci-fi as well as reading in general. But I have also been trying to expand my tastes some over the past year so I'm kind of open to about anything.

I set my reading goal last year at 25 initially and ended up having to bump it up to 70 by the end of the year. So this year I put it at 50 and I'll see where that ends up.

It's nice to meet all of you. :D
