Hello all! Starting up the monthly discussions for February 2018 book-of-the-month suggestions. This discussion is for the MODERN CLASSICS/POPULAR READS CATEGORY.

As a reminder, books that qualify for this category must have a publication date 1970 and after. If the book you wish to nominate was published 1969 or prior, please make your suggestion on the Classics thread.

I'll start off by suggesting The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

D.L. | 16 comments The Alienist by Caleb Carr - it's becoming a TV series next year and sounds fascinating :)

Melanie I will nominate The Hate U Give because it is such an amazing book!

John Green has said that this book will become the classic of this generation much like The Outsiders.

Sarah | 728 comments Second The Alienist and The Hate U Give.

Nominating:
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh

Sarah | 728 comments Oops, classic criteria is before 1970 correct? I’ll love Acid Test over to that category. Sorry about that.

It looks like the group read The Kite Runner in May of last year, so it's not eligible for this thread, but you could nominate it in the Catch-Up thread.

Snezhi I second The Hate U Give.
Hadn't even heard of it till and recently a few of my friends have either read it or have it in their "to-read" lists

message 47: by Chelsea Harjo (new)

Chelsea Harjo | 47 comments Second Big Little Lies!

Kevin (sidious) | 22 comments I will second Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

The Alchemist gets a lot of hype. I have read it, and while I do think it is well written in a way, I (along with many others) have some major philosophical issues with the book. Just a heads-up in case it ends up winning the vote. (Not discouraging people from reading it; just letting them know not to expect too much.)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok, I just read reviews for The Alchemist and I have to read it to find out which camp I lie in. Plus it's short; do you ppl realize how long Watership Down and Strange & Norrell are?!

So, I do second The Alchemist.

message 50: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan | 3 comments I'd like to second The Alchemist and The Road
