Need a book that fits one of the categories? Ask for it here!

Edit: Google Doc link to the checklist (Thanks, Mireille!)

Recs for the historical romance categories? Minus the Regency and Victorian categories, as I have plenty of unread books for those!

Oh, and paranormal romance recs, maybe?

message 3: by Mireille Duval (new)

Mireille Duval | 98 comments You should read A Gift of Ghosts for paranormal romance, it's on your virtual to-read! ;)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
AND SO I SHALL. :D

Uh, I can't tell if this is a stupid question or not--does it count for ghosts?

message 5: by Mireille Duval (new)

Mireille Duval | 98 comments Yes!! Definitely. :) Though the romance is not *with* a ghost?

message 6: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
That's sort of what my brain was thinking--but I'm okay with that, I think. (I've read a romance with ghost, but didn't like it!)

Grace (graizala) | 44 comments I'm not there yet, but when I get to LGBTQ, I'd really like to read a F/F romance. I would suspect the genre is mostly M/M, but I figured I would ask if anyone had any F/F recs for me?

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
I only know about YA ones. These are ones I haven't read, but have heard great things about. Everything Leads to You is new and casually LGBTQ (as in, it's not a a big deal that the main character likes girls). The Miseducation of Cameron Post and Tell the Wolves I'm Home meant a lot to some of my friends.

Oh! And I guess I have read a couple. I didn't like If You Could Be Mine that much, but it's kind of cool for the cultural perspective (set in Iran). And Kissing Kate is middle grade. I don't remember much about it at this point. I think it was okay, but not great.

steph (goodreadscomhondagirll) | 33 comments Recs for Historical Romance > 1950's? I've seemed to hit a dead wall there.

Hmmm, this thread has some nice suggestions:
http://www.paperbackswap.com/Womens-F...

Mary Stewart's name came up a lot in another thread. Of course, I'm pretty sure I DNF'd the only books of hers I've tried, siiiiigh.

I also saw Beverly Clearly recommended. Of course, she (and Stweart, for that matter) weren't actually writing historical fiction. It was contemporary to them!

message 11: by steph (new)

steph (goodreadscomhondagirll) | 33 comments Yeah, I thought of Beverly Clearly but I wasn't sure if she counted since as you said, it was contemporary to them. (so does she count? because if she does it will make my life easier)

And thanks for the link! I think I will try looking for Anne Rivers Siddons. I think we have some of her books at work.

message 12: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
I can't decide! What do you think?

Though hmm...I definitely don't think they should be contemporary, so maybe I do think they should count for historical?

message 13: by steph (new)

steph (goodreadscomhondagirll) | 33 comments Looking at the other categories on the list, I would say her books (Fifteen, Jean and Johnny etc) are either historical romance or YA. They don't really fit anywhere else. I would like them to count for historical romances just so I can use them in that spot but that is just me being selfish. ;)

message 14: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
Yeah, but then *I* can use them, too, haha!

I'm cool with counting them as historical romance. I was thinking about it more last night and I think that's a category we can and maybe SHOULD be pretty flexible* with in general. There just aren't a lot of non-Regency and non-Victorian historicals out there. (I wish there were!)

Out of curiosity, do you have something for flappers?

*I often spell this work as felixble because of Felix Hernandez, so this time, I slowed down as I reached it and was like I WILL GET IT RIGHT . . . and STILL typed "felix", grrrrr. Haha.

message 15: by Jess (new)

Jess | 60 comments There used to be a lot more time periods covered. But those books are, uh, more likely to be outdated, shall we say. But I'd look for titles published in the 80s, honestly.

message 16: by steph (new)

steph (goodreadscomhondagirll) | 33 comments So for flappers I found this, this or this one. I'm leaning towards the last one, just because the other two are YA in 1920's and I don't know if I can stomach the spoiled teens.

This list also helps too, it has some 1950's stuff thrown in as well if you are stuck there: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

And good suggestion, thanks Jess!

I wasn't a huge fan of Anna Godbersen's The Luxe series, though I'm liking The Blonde a lot better. Still, the last one sounds the best to me, too.

Why do the historical YA's have to sound so off putting??? :(

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
Romantic Suspense > Spy recs anyone?

message 19: by Jess (new)

Jess | 60 comments Did you ever do Joanna Bourne, Katie? They're historicals, but spies!!! And I think they're sufficiently suspensey.

message 20: by Mireille Duval (new)

Mireille Duval | 98 comments Would Pink Carnation etc. count, by the way?

message 21: by Jess (new)

Jess | 60 comments Since we are being very loose with our definitions of romance and category, I don't see why not!

message 22: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
I read the first one! I got a bit bogged down in the writing.

And, yeah, Pink Carnation totally counts.

message 23: by steph (new)

steph (goodreadscomhondagirll) | 33 comments Harlequin does a line of romantic suspense. They used to be called Silhouette Romantic Suspense but now they are just called Harlequin Romantic Suspense. It's the covers that have purple bar going along the top or side of the book. Julie Garwood also has one series that is rom suspense though I think I've only read the first couple. I'm still in mourning she stopped historicals to write that series. It's not bad, I just like her older ones better.

message 24: by Jess (new)

Jess | 60 comments What steph said about that line. If you filter on romance and romantic suspense at one of your e-libraries, you'll get a lot of those to pop up almost immediately. That's how I found the one I read for this.

message 25: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
Thanks! I found my CIA/FBI one by doing that on the Carina site, haha. I've just discovered myself to be extremely picky for this genre!

And it's also surprisingly hard to find the right subgenre. (Or is that sub-subgenre?)

Steph, yeah, I came across a few Garwood's when I was looking before, but . . . I don't WANT to read her non-historicals. :P At least, not at the moment.

Mireille Duval | 98 comments Any recs for Contemporary > Medical? And LGBTQ?

message 27: by Jess (new)

Jess | 60 comments I really liked the one I did for LGBTQ! As for contemporary > medical, if you want something short, one of Sarah Morgan's Harlequin Medical titles would fit the bill. Otherwise, hm, doctor specific single title books. I will mull.

message 28: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
Oh! And Suddenly Last Summer if you want a longer Sarah Morgan! I forgot that I rec'd that one to Grace for medical.

I used Fair Game for romantic suspense, but it's M/M and I really liked it!

message 29: by Grace (new)

Grace (graizala) | 44 comments I forgot you rec'd that to me for medical too! HAH.

message 30: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
HA. See if I give YOU recs anymore! ;)

message 31: by Grace (new)

Grace (graizala) | 44 comments Would it make you feel better if I just went and put it on hold so this time I wouldn't forget?

message 32: by Katie (new)

Katie (katayla) | 165 comments Mod
Yes, but I will require proof that you did so. :P
