@Jane: Thank you! How is LOTR on audio? Would you recommend reading the hard copy first or is it easy enough to follow on audio that I could use that for my first read through? That's one of those books I really need to get around to one of these days lol

There's more?!!! I've had it for a little while and missed that it was part of a series. Will definitely be looking for the next one.

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Kelsi, I've not listened to LOTR, but its Tolkien, so the names are rather complex, and if memory serves, some sound similar such as Sauron and Sarumon. Lots of reading and viewing of Tolkein tells me you'll do better with it if you read it first, but that's just my opinion. I just wouldn't want you to get frustrated with an audio thats hard to follow, and swear off Tolkien. SO good. I betcha it would be awesome with that 'sync' thing with reading and audio at the same time, though. I've been meaning to try that, and LOTR would be a great choice, I'm guessing.

And yeah, Irene. 'No. 1 Ladies.... ' is a whole series. The books have amazing names like 'Blue Shoes and Happiness' and 'The Full Cupboard of Life.' Also a phenomenally good HBO series was made a few years ago... maybe 4-6 years ago? Highly recommend, and it won't detract from the books like most tv shows do. I was ready to pack my bags and move to Africa (maybe show up at Precious' door) after the lovely books and award winning show. ;)

message 456: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok I will read the novels first then :) I have the trilogy sitting on my shelf waiting to be read...I think I bought it while I was still in high school (at least 7 years ago lol) so its about time I actually read it!

message 457: by OddModicum Rachel (new)

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments That is one of those series I'd give most anything to be able to experience again, for the first time. Hope you adore them! There's a reason so many people do a total cosplay immersion thing with Tolkien... Such an amazing world! Good luck! I def recommend The Hobbit, too, if you've not read it, but you'll be fine with LOTR without having read Hobbit first.

message 458: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read the Hobbit but I think a re-read is in order, it was a long time ago! I am excited to read them, they are just really chunky and I have so many books to read that my automatic response is to veer to shorter books :p

message 459: by Jane (last edited Aug 21, 2014 10:54AM) (new)

Jane | 705 comments I totally agree with Rachel about reading it before listening to it but then I am not wild about audio but I am challenging myself to listen.

LOTR is extremely complex with both places and names but as I have read them several times I find it okay listening to it. It is also quite long, The Fellowship of the Ring is about 19 hours of listening.

But read them, they are brilliant fantasy. And if you haven't read The Hobbit, I would suggest reading that first.

message 460: by [deleted user] (new)

Ya I am not the biggest audio person either, I find I get distracted too easily. 19 hours is a long listen for sure! You definitely need to dedicate some time to get through that one! I am going to re-read the Hobbit before starting the trilogy I think.

message 461: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments It is also good timing to read the Hobbit soonish as the third and final film should be coming out this December.

message 462: by OddModicum Rachel (new)

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Has anyone here ever done that sync thing where you read ebook and listen to audio simultanously? I don't quite know how it works, but I'm all about 'immersion' in fantasy books, so I think I'd really like it. Can't find anyone who knows details, though, and as I can't remember the exact name, I'm getting nowhere. Somehow they automatically sync themselves (wifi, I assume?) so that the audio plays as you read?

Can't wait for the third Hobbit film! I'm due for a reread of that one, myself. That forest hedgewitch guy was so darned cool in the last one. Keep promising myself I'll take some time to do a digital art piece based on him, and not finding the time.

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Joy, so glad those Shakespearean Star Wars' are fabulous! I can't wait to dig into em. Ug.. having no time to read is weighing on me like crazy. lol Hopefully in next few days I'll get some time. ;)

I happened to do that recently with one of my kindle unlimited books. Like I told you by pm, they give you the kindle & audio versions together when they're available and I was listening to the audio and opened the kindle book up. It kept reading to me and highlighting the lines as it went. What I found for me is I read faster than the audio and it just got annoying trying to follow along. I kept reading ahead :-)

There are 14!!!! books in that series. Holy crap. My digital library has quite a few of them, if not all, but naturally the next one is not available right now! Had to put a hold on it. Would love to just buy it but with that many, I'll be good and just wait. There's a tv series too! Naturally, not available to stream on Netflix. Only available thru their dvd subscription. I may ask Mom to get that for me for Christmas.

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Ok, so looks like we need some Es and an N according to the list. I'll read this one, for an E. I hopefully will be able to finish it for the week as its just 230 pages.

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Ok, so since we just got those two new E books listed, and since we apparently still need an N, I'm happy to switch to reading 'New Moon' for my last read of the week. Not sure if that's necessary, as don't know if my authors middle initial 'N' will work on book above. I can get either of them done before tomorrow nite, but not both, unfortunately. Would be nice to give us a final letter for our last spell it since my books were so low this week. ;) Anyway, just yell out if we still need the N and I'll switch. I have no preference, either way.

message 478: by OddModicum Rachel (new)

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Oh.. thought those were two newly listed E's, so figured we were good on those, but shy an 'N'. ;) I'll stick with what I've got listed, then... the Hypnotize Yourself book. Thanks, Kerry-anne!

@Irene: Sorry to hear you hurt yourself, hope the bath helps!

@Rachel: I had heard of using epsom salts but not the hydrogen peroxide, you just dump the whole bottle in? What does it do? I am interested because I suffer from chronic back pain and migraines so if it works it would be awesome! Also going to check that book out for sure!

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments Kelsi... yep, I've got all manner of handy back pain helpful stuff. I've been disabled with it for 9 years, and my dad is a homeopath, so we've tried it all. Ideally, if you're shopping for it, you want to buy the 16 oz bottles of hydrogen peroxide in brown bottles... cost about 90c each. Dump 1-2 whole bottles and 2-4 cups of epsom salts into a bath. Salts 'melt' better if you pour em under hot water. Then soak for at least 40 minutes. Pain should be better, and you'll be an odd combination of relaxed yet energized. Its awesome. lol And can't rec the book highly enough. Its pretty fab. Yell at me with a pm if you want some other stuff. ;)

I'll be adding those to my next shopping list. This isn't chronic pain but daily work pain. I'm fine on days off. Well, except my feet. I'm a Certified Nursing Assistant and taking care of Grandma & Grandpa does a number on the body! I'm rolling people in bed that don't necessarily want to roll the way I want, standing people up while they lean on me, and hauling around machines that are supposedly helpful but take a lot of heaving to and fro to maneuver. I love my job but went part time because my body can't take the abuse as much any more.

message 487: by OddModicum Rachel (new)

OddModicum Rachel (oddmodicumrachel) | 126 comments I'll pm you with a few things that are lifesavers when I overextend. All cheap stuff you can get at amazon or walmart, and honestly, makes a huge difference for me. I can't imagine how you feel after a day of hauling people parts, but that bath should help, esp since its a nice energizing feeling as well, so you might get some 'you' time in the evening after you soak a bit.
