Thank you to the author, Breeana Puttroff, for an ARC ebook. I was so excited to be able to read this book and it did not disappoint.
Somehow, this book was better than the first book! And I truly loved the first book.
Things pick up more or less where the first book left off. In this book was get to see relationships and friendships blossom. It's definitely a treat to read. I felt so many emotions during this book and definitely felt like crying a time or two. It's impossible not to feel a connection with the characters. The world of Eirentheos is fascinating and I was so happy we were able to spend a majority of the book there.
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED reading Will and Quinn's friendship. I am excited for what is to come.
One of the things I love most about this series is the emphasis on family. It's not often you find a YA book that let's us as a reader know the family and see the relationship among siblings. That is something I enjoy about this series. It's impossible not to love and feel with/for the characters in this novel.
I read a lot of YA novels last year and I have to say that this was one of my favorite series. I am eagerly awaiting the next in the book and would read anything Breeana had/has written. This series is totally stellar.
P.S. I have totally already started rereading this book!
Second in the Dusk Gate Chronicles, Roots of Insight takes teenager Quinn back through a mysterious gateway from modern life into the world of Eirentheos, where time moves faster but return is always bound to the setting of the sun. Soon she’s trying to work out how to disappear for a weekend without anyone noticing—wouldn’t every teenager long to do that sometime? But Quinn’s disappearances are filled with adventure and danger, and a secret that gradually weaves its way into the tale, waiting for further books to reveal the whole truth. Readers might want to start with book one, where Quinn first encounters the royal family who now seem almost as close as her own mother and siblings. This clever teen now finds her grades slipping as she struggles through a tangle of teen emotions, drawn to William, to Thomas, to the boy next door, and wondering what true love feels like. In the midst of it all, she struggles to find her place in two different worlds, and to rescue a friend who disappears into the dangers of enemy territory. Keeping secrets, remaining loyal, and giving honest trust are persistent themes in this novel. Sweet family relationships keep the story moving forward. A slight excess of panic reminds readers the characters are still very young. And a touch of politics keeps more things safely hidden until volume three (or later I suppose). I enjoyed the story, though some passages seemed a little repetitive. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships too, though the teens, like real teens I suppose, seem rather disturbingly eager to bend rules and adventure alone. Most of all, these worlds are fun, their interactions nicely revealed, and the touch mystery has a way of growing on you. This is a fairly slow read, but a fun teen fantasy and nicely complete, for all that it's only volume two.
Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy when I invited the author to my blog.
I fell in love with Seeds of Discovery right here on GoodReads, when Ms Puttroff only had three or four chapters posted. When she finished, so I could finish it, I could hardly wait until Roots of Insight was published. And I wasn't disappointed.
This installment in the Dusk Gate Chronicles is every bit as good as the first, with a good bit more mystery and tension. If you hated Tolliver in Seeds of Discovery, you'll hate him more in Roots of Insight.
You'll also find yourself in a quandary over who you like better, William, Zander or Thomas (and maybe like me, wish Quinn would be cloned!). You'll wish you could read faster when someone turns up missing, and the search winds up taking some time, because you just want them found. And you'll be biting your nails to the quick as you wait to see how one particularly stressful scene plays out.
Finally, when you reach the final, surprise ending, you won't be able to wait for the third book in the series to be released. There are more mysteries to solve, more questions that need answered...and that last cliffhanger sentence will leave you wishing book three was available NOW.
My Mom got this as a first reads giveaway. Thank you for sending it to her so I could read it and review it!
This is a second in a series. Even having not read the first one, this is a really good book. The author lets us see the relations between each of the characters easily. The story flows really well even without knowing what happened in the first book. The characters seem realistic with bits of tough and sweet showing through. The search for Thomas is exciting as well as the developing relationship between William and Quinn. So in summary... the book was clean, exciting, romantic, suspensful and I'm looking forward to the next one!I'll definately be looking for more from this author!
I forgot to mention I will be posting this same review on my Mom's page.
Oh WOW! Just finished and I feel like I can't breathe. SOOOOO GOOD! Even better than the first story. This series is so refreshing and was unexpectedly brilliant. This second book in the Dusk Gate Chronicles picks up right where the first book leaves off. Quinn's relationships between friends, family, and the princes are even more complicated and get downright juicy. Struggles between the royals, hidden agendas, and some surprising characters are just some of the things encountered in this second edition. Leaves off with a HUGE cliffhanger that had me screaming WAIT....WHAT???? Brilliant, Amazing, Enchanting...can't say enough praises! I will be anxiously awaiting the next book:)
Quinn has just returned from her first trip to Eirentheos and things are starting to return to normal, more or less. The days pass with Quinn trying to concentrate on her school work and enjoy her new relationship with Zander, when Thomas shows up one Monday with William, inviting her to return to Eirentheos for their brother Simon’s wedding.
All is not as perfect in the other world as it was before – trouble is stirring in the neighbouring kingdom of Philotheum and Thomas tells Quinn he’s going to travel there to find his cousin Lily, who hasn’t been heard from in weeks. But when he doesn’t return, Quinn and William decide they must go to find him.
Roots of Insight is an exciting and quick read – if Seeds of Discovery was a little light plot-wise, Roots of Insight makes up for it. The story picks up from almost exactly where the first book finishes, and it takes a while to get back into action, but once it does it doesn’t let up.
Quinn is more vulnerable in this part of the story – she has panic attacks throughout the story and William isn’t always there to comfort her, but when they are together there is a lovely chemistry and slow-burning romance. He’s such a gentleman – we get to see more of his mature personality as parts of the story are told from his point of view. Poor Zander gets a bit of a raw deal in this book – he has really fallen for Quinn but she treats him terribly.
A cliffhanger ending means I’ll be trying to get my hands on the third book, Thorns of Decision, as soon as possible! There are still plenty of questions to be answered – there are continual hints that Quinn may be more than just a visitor to the other world, but nothing has been revealed just yet!
Roots of Insight is a more emotionally-charged and suspenseful read than the first book was, and I would certainly recommend it to those who enjoy teen fantasy.
So far Roots of Insight picks up seamlessly from book one, Seeds of Discovery. I love the characters. I wish it hadn't been so long since I read book one, though.
The turmoil between Quinn and her feelings between not just two different worlds but Zander, her boyfriend in her world, and William and Thomas, the two brothers in the world she becomes stuck in is well done. I really feel for her and want to reach in and give her a hug. Wow! What an ending! I could hardly put it down and then "Bam!" it's finished with a left hook!
I enjoyed this book very much and am going to recommend it to many of the young adult readers in my school. Thank you so much!
If you read "Seeds of Discovery," then you have got to read this! Breeana is an amazing writer and takes you through the book in a way that you can see the scenery and feel the emotions of the characters. This book has it's share of suspense and it plays at your emotions and you read about William and Quinn on their journey to find William's brother, Thomas. I already have an e-reader version of this book, but I fully intend to purchase a physical copy as soon as I can! I am impatiently waiting for the following books to come out! :D
MY THOUGHTS While I didn't love the first book, I liked it well enough to want to continue the series. To be honest, I wish I hadn't. This wasn't a bad book, but it just had too much filler to keep me interested.
After the events of the last book, Quinn is trying to get used to being back in her own world. But that's easier than it sounds when she has been gone for ten days, on an adventure, and everyone at home expects the same old Quinn. It doesn't help that William won't talk to her and that she's now suddenly in a relationship with her childhood friend. When Thomas comes to her world to invite Quinn to his eldest brother's wedding, Quinn immediately accepts and can't wait to travel back to Eirentheos. Yet, when one trip turns into another, Quinn struggles with her two lives, especially when danger appears in the world of Eirentheos.
My main issue with this book was that it took until 50% into the book for an actual plot to appear. Before that point, the book was entirely just the day-to-day of Quinn, in both the real world and Eirentheos. We had the royal wedding, but that barely moved the plot. The plot didn't move until days later. It was just all filler, and while I was fine with seeing these day-to-day scenes at the beginning, I got tired of waiting for the plot to move. When the plot did move forward it did get intriguing. This book does introduce another danger and the politics of the world. More seems to be built up, but the pacing was still slow. I actually started to skim-read scenes because it would take so long to get anywhere and I still understood what was happening.
As far as Quinn, I really don't know how I feel about her. We're supposed to see her as smart, but she seems pretty average. She does seem to want to jump in to save the day, but overall, I just thought she was an okay MC. I noticed in this book that she giggles way too much. I don't know if it's just me, but giggling should not be how you describe a young adult's laughter. She's over the age of thirteen. That's not a giggle, that's a laugh.
There is a little more romance in this book than book one. While in book one I wasn't sure who would be the love interest, now I am very certain who it will be. Despite the fact that it is obvious who Quinn really likes and who she will end up with., this book also has two other "love interests". One of which is the hometown boy and, come on, Quinn has no romantic feelings for him.
IN CONCLUSION Overall, this book just did not interest me. Book one had some fun ideas and I liked it, but this one had such a slow pace that I just had difficulty slogging through it. This book ended in a cliffhanger-- though it wasn't a major one--but I just don't want to continue the series. One of the reasons I was slogging through was because I had a theory at the very beginning of book one that Quinn is either from Eirentheos or her father was, and I was waiting for the reveal, but this never happened. I can tell this is a highly rated series so others will definitely enjoy it more than me. If I read it at a younger age, and with less of an editorial eye, maybe I would have liked it. But it just wasn't for me.
Quinn left Eirentheos at the end of the Seeds of Discovery. This book picks up with Quinn returning to school Getting back into Earth life is more difficult than she had anticipated. Before entering into the new world, she had struggled with trigonometry, but after spending ten days where she didn't have to think about school at all, she finds trigonometry to be more like a foreign language. She is saved by Zander, the boy she was discovering a blooming relationship with prior to her adventure. Zander starts helping her "catch up" on her homework even though he didn't know that the feeling she was suffering from was that she was behind. In reality she had only been gone for a single day and no one knew about her disappearance. She is also surprised by her mom with everything she needed for the Valentine Dance that Zander had asked her to go to, which she had forgotten.
Things with Zander develop into full blown boyfriend/girlfriend status in a short month where Quinn is absorbed into his world, but also trying desperately to maintain some kind of friendship with William. Zander shows his obsessive side not wanting to share Quinn's attention with William since he does not understand their relationship at all. Quinn is unable to tell him about William's world and how much she really wanted to go back. The decision to visit again is made when she receives a royal invitation to William's older brother's wedding. Life gets complicated trying to juggle friendships in two worlds as Quinn struggles to find her place in either one.
I have absolutely loved this series so far. By the time the end came, I was pretty certain I knew a key piece to the story, which was confirmed at the devastating cliffhanger. It is devastating just because I WANT MORE! I sooooo want to know what's going to happen next. It's a fantastic YA story that even adults can enjoy and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes reading about alternate worlds and fantasy.
I started reading this book literally right after I finished reading the first book in the series because I just couldn’t wait! This book is short as well (the only thing I don’t seem to like about this series) the great thing is that because it is so short, it only takes a few pages until I am brought back to another world. But because I knew it was so short, I actually found myself stopping myself from reading as often as I generally would because I wanted to make the book last as long as possible! Roots of Insight picks up right where Seeds of Discovery ended, there is so much that happens in this book and I don’t want to give anything away but… WOW! That just about sums up everything I thought while reading it! Quinn is once again such a strong character and she is so loyal to those she cares about (even though she does technically lie to her friends in her world, it is only to protect her friends in William’s world) Speaking of William, he is still my favorite character in this series, although I do love Thomas too, I mean who wouldn’t? Thomas is literally Prince Charming. But in this book we get to see a completely different side of William, and when we get to read from his point of view, it’s fascinating to know exactly what he is thinking! When I finished this book I was just stunned, Breanna Puttroff left us with so many questions for the next book, and the next boo doesn’t come out for another MONTH! I am going to spend the next month thinking about this series and hoping that 30 days goes by really fast because I can’t WAIT for the third book! The first book made me put this series near the top of my favorite book series list, and this book just solidified its status there. If the third book is as good as I am expecting it to be, it could be my favorite series for quite a while!
Reader thoughts: Like before, I love how important all the little children are to everyone. Eirentheos and Philotheum are basic, but believable.
In this book we get to see a little more medical practice and terms from Will and Nathaniel. Quinn's Colorado nativeness comes out a bit more in fishing and tent camping.
I do love the gallantry/chivalry of the Eirentheans. They're always so courteous, wanting to make sure Quinn's okay and comfortable. Not just men, but the women, too. Their hospitality is so fine.
And, oh joy! We find out so much about the characters and how they're really all connected. I have many suspicions.
Yay, the aging question was answered!
Minor spoiler here, but Quinn kisses THREE boys in the space of less than a week. Most of the time she's an admirable protagonist, even when she's panicking. But this whole romance thing is ridiculous. (Oh, and she is pretty useless, despite travel with the rescue party. What does she ACTUALLY do?).
Writer thoughts The other-world names are so dull. Sarah? Tom? Jeremiah? Ellen? Henry? Simon? Charles? Stephen? Will? The only interesting ones are Tolliver and Gianna and Graeme. I suppose this comes from the connection of Duesterros (sp?) to Earth, but it is common in epic-fantasy and sci-fi to see more interesting names (Eragon, Frodo, Symon, Belgarion, Tyce, Vorkosigan, Rhebengarthen, etc.). So, BP's names are a tad disappointing.
At the same time, few fantasy authors focus on children so much. It's awesome how much we get to see young kids in these books, and how much the adults love and care for the children.
The book needed a bit more editing. A few paragraphs were arranged or split confusingly, and a few times there weren't enough dialogue tags. A few typos, but nothing too distracting.
Wow! First I want to say I'm really tired. I was up till 3am because I could not put the book down. However, when I did finish I was up another 30 minutes trying to figure out what just happened! Really! I have to wait how long until the next book?
Ok, so obviously I love this series. It picks up right were book one left off. This is truly a YA supernatural romance adventure. I really appreciate that it does not flow with bad language and sex and claim to be YA. When they were on our side of the gate (our world) they acted like REAL teenagers. I have three I know how they act. However, when they were on the other side of the gate it was obvious that it was a different world and their teens were totally different. However, it worked. I also love that this is not a love triangle it is a love square!!! What I mean by that is Quinn is caught between Zander, Will and Thomas. (See four of them and four corners make a square". Though at the end of this book one of them turns into just "friends". So now we are back to a love triangle. I totally think I have figured out who Quinn is! I'm not sure but I think I know. Gosh I can't wait for book 3!
Though this book is a little slower paced during the first half. The second half will have you holding your breath unable to put it down. I truly believe Breeana Puttroff will be having her own displays at the local bookstores soon. I'm privileged to have gotten a hold of this series before it goes big time. Because I truly believe it will.
As Quinn is adjusting back to life in her world, she wonders if she can sustain a friendship with Wiliam Rose now that she is back with her friends. Just when things were getting back to normal Thomas shows up to invite Quinn to a wedding. Through out this book we see William try to give Quinn the facts that she will be hurting people in the end. At some point she would have to give up either her family and friends and relationships or the Eirentheos. After the wedding Thomas kisses Quinn and tells her he's about to go on a dangerous mission to find his cousin Lily. This is right before Quinn crosses the gate back.
Quinn notices something isn't right with William, he's unresponsive and just going through the motions while his mind is somewhere else. She finds out that Thomas never came home. Quinn tells William what she knows and drags him with her through the gate. There they devise a plan with others to rescue Thomas.
Something weird is going on when others around William and Quinn talk about Quinn and not telling her what is going on. Quinn also is having more violent nightmares that she doesn't know what they mean. Eventually Thomas is released along with some other prisoners and brought to where Quinn and William are, there he is healed the best that can be in the other world.
The ending was great and left so much open wanting to know more. Can't wait to read the third book in this great series!
In Roots of Insight, Quinn, Willams and Thomas's story continues with further adventures in Eirentheos and challenges as Quinn tries to balance her attachment to the people she met in Eirentheos and with living her life on Earth with her family and close friend Zander.
The world of Eirentheos was fascinating to visit and get to know along with Quinn. While there is a very fairytale feel to the world, it isn't the typical fairytale world of the Grimm stories, and that was one of my favorite parts of the books. The world felt rich and new. The other part was the characters. Watching Quinn explore and discover the world William and his younger brother Thomas was wonderful. I laughed out loud nearly every time Thomas was around. I can't wait to read the next book and see what happens with Quinn, William, Zander and Thomas.
*I was given a ARC of Roots of Insight by the author but was not paid or otherwise compensated for this review.

Absolutely loved this book. After reading Seeds of Discovery, I had to find out what happened to the characters next. This story can appeal to people of any age. Now that I'm done with it my 15 year old niece can finally stop nagging me about borrowing so she can read it.
If Seeds of Discovery was a great book, this one is even better! The plot thickens even more as Quinn comes back to her own world and tries to get back into the swing of things. With a serious boyfriend and grades starting to slip, Quinn has a busy schedule. Yet when Thomas invited Quinn back to Eirenthos too go to his brothers wedding, Quinn accepts immediately. After Quinn risks her life in an accident, William becomes increasingly more distant and reserved. At the end of Quinn's visit, William warms her not to get too attached to the anyone, because it would be difficult to have a relationship of any kind. Once Quinn comes back to her world, there doesn't seem to be much left to do in the book... Until William tells her one night that Thomas is missing. Quinn realizes that she might have an idea about where he is. Without anything else in her mind, she rushes off safe him.
THOUGHTS: I literally couldn't put this book down when I first read it, and ten rereads later, it's still captivating. I love that they author stresses the importance of family in the books. All of the main characters have very close relationships with their family members, which you don't see in a lot of YA books. I also love how the main plot isn't immediately obvious, because it gave me time to enjoy the world, before I have to focus on a plot. I feel like the relationships are also a bit more complex than what you see in many fantasy books. I also like how there is not a lot of emphasis on magic. That is something that makes this series stand out from the crowd. The characters make decisions and make their goals in their own. Finally, I really liked hope there is a belief in a higher power. In a lot of fantasy or YA books, the characters are almost gods themselves, and they can't do any wrong. In this book, however, most of the main characters believe that they do have to report to someone of something. However, the author doesn't beat you with this idea, she makes it seem normal, and even has the characters explain a little more to Quinn about what they believe.

Our girl Quinn goes to the Valentine dance at school. She has a nice time with her date, but it pales when she gets invited to the royal wedding. Never mind that the wedding of William's oldest brother will be taking place in another world. Never mind that Quinn has to lie to her best friend, her boyfriend and her mother. Crossing that invisible bridge messes up time too; she will be gone a full 10 days while only one 24-hour period passes at home. Also, Quinn manages to hurt herself her first day in that other world, a bad enough hurt that she requires stitches. And when she gets home after that, William starts ignoring her again. This is a great series that just sucks you in and never spits you out again. I'm not trying to read rapidly, but I get into the story and off I go. So far, I have loved everything I have read in this series, and I think you will too.
Oh my god, so much better than the first book of this Dusk Gate Chronicles series. I mean... Stuff actually happened in this one! Plots were revealed! Characters developed! Relationships progressed! Conflicts intervened! Tensions heightened! STUFF HAPPENED, YA'LL!
All that being said, Roots of Insight still isn't quite 5-star territory for me, but definitely a good solid 4. I'm really glad that I took a chance on the second book in this series... So much so that I took a leap, and went ahead and bout the remaining 5 books in the series just now. More, please!
Darn YOU Breeana! (all in good fun). I started your first book and it was as if you were looking into my dreams of a place far away. You let me build it with your details but the story became my own. I started reading mostly as I felt I needed to but after finishing the second....before I even finished it. I HAD to purchase the next. If you are looking for a book that you can make your own and feel as though you are walking through the kingdom with the characters this IS the book for you. You won't leave disappointed.
Actually 3.5. Better than the first and there were a few typos but definitely started to pick up the last 3rd or so and I like the direction the book is heading. First part prob would have been a 3 stars second half 4 stars. Still found a lot of the characters over emotional. Overall a lot more happened in this book.
After finishing the first book in the series, I could not stop reading! I loved the continuing story of Quinn's journey between two worlds. Roots of Insight was an amazing book, and I love that I can share this series with my teenage daughters!
These books are super cheesy to begin with, then this book was more of a filler than having significant progress in the plot. There were a few major plot points of course, but not enough for its own book, but it's still cute. Needing some fluff right now and this series is working for me.
