Wendy (wmaresca) Just finished An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson It was a good book can't say a 4 or 5 star read for me more like a 3.5
I would defintely read a second book if there is one. The characters were for the most part likable. Some better than others. Loved Gadfly and Lark as the side characters. Not sure how I feel about Isobel. I know it has been compared with ACOMAF but to me nothing compares to A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas or to Rhysand. Love him !!!!

Sainabou I just finished reading The Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford and Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo

They were both really good

The woman on the orient express was about Agatha Cristie and touched a bit on her life from after her divorce with her first husband to her meeting her second one, and all the while this badass is writing amazing books :) I loved it
I really need to read her books

Stay with me is an african novel about a happy couple that couldn't conceive and as a result, the family members start to intervene and that completely messes up their happy marriage (this one made me cry so much)

Both of these were awesome

Sainabou Oh! and I also finished Roomies by Christina Lauren

This one is about a girl that had an insane crush on this street performer and then finally talks to him after 6 months! It was really sweet :D

message 54: by Sainabou (new)

Sainabou i finished another book: More Than Need You (More Than Words, #2) by Shayla Black . My cousin insisted I read it because she really liked it lol and then thirty minutes in I realise it was a second book in a series :( so now I am reading the first book but its set in Hawaii and about two brothers that work in real estate but they have been estranged for three years so its about about them finding love and repairing their relationship

Wendy (wmaresca) Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman Wow is all I can say about this book I am an 50 pages in and don't want to put it down.

message 58: by Evianrei (new)

Evianrei Finished two books recently!

The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic
A book of short stories about beasts, magic, talking animals, princesses, princes, and much, much more! There are a total of six short stories in the book. Each story is very well written, and illustrated beautifully on each page, I also found it very nice that a 'final illustration' was shown after each story. My favorite stories had to be the first two, Ayama and the Beast, and The Too Clever Fox. I would highly recommend this set of short stories!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
This is my first time around reading the Harry Potter series, and I have been really enjoying it! I've actually been listening to it on audible lately, and Jim Dale does a fantastic job! I also like getting more content through the book than I ever did in the films.

Harry happens upon a tattered schoolbook that formerly belonged to someone who called themselves 'The Half-Blood Prince'. Follow along as Harry attempts to discover who the Half-Blood Prince really was, and his new 'lessons' with Dumbledore on He Who Must Not Be Named. There is also something strange going on in the school, and Harry desperately wants to get to the bottom of it.

Oh my goodness, you guys! I love all these reviews!!! SO AWESOME!!

@Candace I was glad to read Blackberry Winter as well! Definitely a little sad. I loved your review though, awesome! As for HP...I LOVE IT!! So glad you are reading that series!! Will definitely also need to pick up The Language of Thorns

@Bridget Great review! It is a bummer that the book was not the best, but I am glad you still enjoy the author's writing!!

@Wendy I have not heard of An Enchantment of Ravens...it looks interesting. I am glad it was enjoyable!

@Missberry You are kicking ass! :D FOUR BOOKS! Dang girl! :D

FINALLY finished Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. I really hated this book. Like, a lot. I could go on for days regarding why I hated it so much, but it boils down to two things -- 1) two dimensional characters and 2) an incredibly stupid plot. Maybe I am too old for these kind of books. XD

They were all good in their own way, trying to reach my 40 book goal for this year is getting difficult! Sorry to hear you didn't like Shiver, I actually enjoyed the series. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't so terrible for me that I had to suffer through it!

message 61: by Alex (new)

Alex Kamachi | 21 comments Okay some books I've read since this started:

Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey

I loved this. Absolutely loved this. However, fair warning, it's got a lot about sex in there. And BDSM. But not in a fifty shades way. The world is fascinating and very thoroughly developed. There is beauty and friendship, love and intrigue. I highly recommend trying this book. It won't be for everyone but it is a great book.

Indexing (#1) by Seanan McGuire

Everyone needs to read this. Period. Men in Black with fairy tales. The world is inhabited by stories that want to be told, no matter who is hurt in the process of reaching "happily ever after". It's the main character's job to stop the stories from happening any way they can and minimize the casualties involved. Loved this and already have #2 on my kindle to read. It's on kindle unlimited for those who have it! :)

The City Stained Red by Sam Sykes

Okay so great book BUT it's the second trilogy in the world with the characters. So, while the characters are amazing and the writing is unreal, I was soooo confused while reading this. But the writing was good enough to carry it regardless. I'm planning on getting the first trilogy soon so I can read the meeting stories of the characters. Do that. Don't do what I did.

@Candace How close are you to reaching your goal? :D You know, I just don't think I was in the proper mindset for Shiver. I am very curious to see what the second book is about...(view spoiler) Call me weird, but even though I literally threw the book twice, I want to see what the second book is about. XD

Allison Spent an unfortunate two days reading this The Twilight Wife by A.J. Banner which I would not have finished had I not won it thru a Goodreads giveaway. The characters are boring, the plot is hella crazy and it’s completely unsatisfying (and dumb!) how the big secret is revealed. (view spoiler)

@Allie That spoiler was hilarious. :D

@Candace I hear you there! So much drama. We are getting too old for this shit. XD

message 70: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Norris I just finished reading The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. Oh my, this book was a phenomenal thriller and certainly lived up to its hype. I can't say too much about it...or really anything about it without giving something away, because I think it's best if you go into it blind, but it had me nervously turning pages and trying to figure out what the heck was going on and what was going to happen next. I can honestly say there's no way I could have guessed the direction this book took and I was surprised right up until the very last chapter. I really hope these two authors write another book together in the future.

Cast Under an Alien Sun (Destiny's Crucible #1) by Olan Thorensen !
It was a little bit slow at first but sets up for a really good series and picks up the pace from middle to end. Definitely has laugh out loud parts, a lot of fun characters and an interesting world. I'm interested to see where it goes with the next books!

I finished reading Ever After by Samantha Chase. That was dumb. XD Yes, the first book in the series was super predictable and cheesy (it was made into a Hallmark film after all), but I liked the main character in the first book. This character was just so ridiculous. It was a short little thing and definitely kept my attention on the airplane, but I won't recommend or reread it, that is for sure.

Sainabou Hey everyone :) haven't posted in a few days but I havent been reading much unless you count rereads which I dont :(

But yes I have read two books that are new to me Dirty Little Secret and Dirty Little Promise

It is a series about a guy that owns an escort agency and he kinda drops his card for this girl that he sees in a coffee shop and likes but then when she calls the number he starts to act like he is not interested (eyeroll) until she starts dating his brother

message 80: by Little Bee (new)

Little Bee (littlebeesreads) | 199 comments Okay! Able to post my little blurb about Witch Is When The Floodgates Opened (A Witch P.I. Mystery #7) by Adele Abbott

It is book 7 in a cozy mystery series about a woman who finds out she is a witch, from a long line of witches, upon her biological mother's deathbed. She had been adopted by a human family and raised as human. She took over her adopted father's P.I. business. The end of this one for sure left me ready for book 8! It is a super fast series. I am listening to them on audible. The narrator is fantastic and the audiobook style is really great. One of my favorite things is that when they talk on the phone, it really sounds muffled like they are on the phone.

The series is really great. It mixes mystery, romantic interests but it is not a main focus, and paranormal. Each character is very unique and makes the story that much more fun, entertaining, and interesting. There are quite a few books in the series, though the author has started releasing books on audible.

A witch PI. That looks adorable! I will need to check out the first audiobook.

I just finished listening to The Hundredth Queen by Emily R. King. That narrator was awful! I couldn't tell if I really did not like the book, or if the narration was so bad that it distracted me from the book's potential. I need a good audiobook!

message 82: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wmaresca) So just finished reading Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman with my son. He had to read it for his 7th grade English class. It was a dark for a 13 year old I thought but really liked the story. He did like it but the topic was a tough one.

message 83: by Toyger (new)

Toyger Chives | 3 comments I've listened to the audiobook for https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... twice now after having it recommended to me by none other than the headmistress herself~

It's awesome! You don't even need specific knowledge of Star Trek so much as general awareness of how cheesy Star Trek-like scifi shows were in the early days. The author (John Scalzi) injects a lot of humor throughout the book to hold it all together like glue. It starts off very silly and slowly adds a thin layer of Conflict that your serious side wants to see resolved.

To give you an idea how silly it starts off:

Dahl (the main protagonist) tells Duvall (second character we meet) that he spent time on an alien colony to become a monk of sorts, but that he wasn't able to 'rank up', because ascending the Forshan religious hierarchy required some "physical requirements" he wouldn't have been able to perform.
Duvall: Like what?
Dahl: Self-impregnation, for one.

message 84: by Allison (last edited Jan 02, 2018 07:49PM) (new)

Allison Started and finished four books in the new year already: The Secret of Skull Mountain (Hardy Boys, #27) by Franklin W. Dixon Footprints Under the Window (The Hardy Boys #12). by Franklin W. Dixon A Figure in Hiding (Hardy Boys, #16) by Franklin W. Dixon I cant really give a little blurb about either in good conscience, if you’ve read one Hardy Boys book, you’ve kind of read them all!

But I also read this How to Speak Dragonese (How to Train Your Dragon, #3) by Cressida Cowell it’s the third book in the “How to train you Dragon” series and I can wholeheartedly recommend it!! The whole series is narrated by the wonderful David Tennant who puts so much into the audios. Every character has a different voice (he’s soooooo good at that!) and David’s voice just wraps you like silk. I could go on gushing but just trust me and get this series on audio. It’s fabulous! The stories are really cute, you will laugh out loud all the way through and the audios aren’t long so you can finish them in a day or two. I have been told numerous times that I’m really stingy on rating stars and I easily gave all three books so far five stars. Which I do not give lightly, 5 star-ers I only give out to books I absolutely loved AND would reread. And with 5,000+ books in my tbr, I hardly ever reread.

message 85: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Norris I finished Lumberjanes, Vol. 1 Beware the Kitten Holy by Noelle Stevenson by Noelle Stevenson yesterday. It was such a fun and cute graphic novel! I definitely recommend it. The book follows five butt-kicking Lumberjanes on a number of adventures during their stay at Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's camp for hard-core lady-types. The theme of each chapter is centered around the merit badge that they are trying to earn or that relates to whichever adventure they are on. Their adventures, by the way, involve supernatural creatures, mystery, and puzzles galore. The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and the illustrations are so colorful and vibrant. The writing is funny, the characters are upbeat and adorable, and it's all centered around the key elements of friendship, imagination, leadership, and girl power. Check out Lumberjanes if you want a fun, uplifting graphic novel to brighten your spirits. "FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX!" lol I just had to.

@Toyger I am so glad you liked this one!! I loved it so much and it had me laughing through the whole thing. :) Zech read more of Scalzi's books and loved them too.

@Elizabeth That book looks absolutely adorable. Looks like an awesome, warm-fuzzy way to kick off the new year~

@Allie I will definitely need to check out the audiobooks for the How to Train Your Dragon series. Sounds awesome!

message 89: by Little Bee (new)

Little Bee (littlebeesreads) | 199 comments Finished my third book of the year last night!

Mrs. McGinty's Dead (Hercule Poirot, #30) by Agatha Christie

I enjoy Agatha Christie novels and am making it a point to read the entire Hercule Poirot series. One thing I have learned about Agatha Christie and the novels of hers I have read, the killer is always the least likely suspect and is the person that you generally think it is even though all the clues say otherwise.

Mrs. McGinty's Dead is no exception to this thought. It was really good and fun trying to sort out the clues with Poirot. Christie's books are really easy to read and follow along with. There was one character I knew FOR SURE was involved in some capacity. And though this was an accurate thought, they were not the murderer. The person I initially thought was the murderer was.

Christie really knows how to switch it up so it is not the same boring murder mystery. I love the whodunnit style of writing. I also like the shock value in many of her stories (such as Murder on the Orient Express).

I highly recommend this series. You do not necessarily have to read them in order. In fact, I havent even read the first in the series yet! Though it did just come in the mail...so I will soon :) There is not a lot of crossover between books because each book is a different case. Sometimes a character will return to Poirot for help, but not knowing any previous case does not alter the book in any way. There are some books that are said to be read before others. You can find this actually on the listing of the series page.

Olivia (siriusly-snape) | 10 comments FINISHED:

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. It’s my least favorite book in the series due to all the anger built up inside Harry and *HUGE SPOILER* Sirius Black, my favorite character dying. Also, Umbridge (ahhh she is horrible). But, I can understand why Harry is feeling this moody way all the time because he witnessed a Hogwarts student getting murdered by Voldemort and almost got murdered himself!

It’s overall a really fantastic book, and I would still give it 5 stars because the foreshadowing is great and the novel itself was written beautifully...I mean, come on, it’s J.K. ROWLING! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars

Allison Reread the classic Persuasion by Jane Austen by Jane Austen but this time by audio.

Ranked third in my favorite JA novel, I still could read this over and over again. JA’s prose is just flawless and you feel everything the MC does as it’s happening. Plus it has the world’s greatest love letter ever written in it!

message 95: by Evianrei (new)

Evianrei Finished The Horse and His Boy (Chronicles of Narnia, #3) by C.S. Lewis a day or so ago! I thought it was a splendid read, perhaps not as fun to read as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , but it definitely had that same wonderful writing style.

I wrote a very short review here: The Horse and His Boy Review

It tells a tale of two young children, and two talking horses, escaping to Narnia (or at least the North) while being pursued by their captors.

And the I read Dr. OB (St. Luke's Docuseries, #1) by Max Monroe about a doctor and nurse that begin a secret relationship and then drama drama drama :)

Allison Finished Pies and Prejudice (A Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery, #1) by Ellery Adams It’s a cute, cozy mystery situated in a touristy town in Northwest Georgia. The descriptions of the landscape/surroundings make you feel like you’re there, the characters are diverse and interesting, every page talks about dessert or food in general so it makes you hungry, and there’s a strong solidarity in women within this book. Throw in some magic frou frou and a couple of hot guys and you’ve got a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours :)
