If not, a few suggestions or a link to find a book for this task would be a great help.

I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for that task. I was lucky the the edition I read had a planet in the background. Another one is Old Man's War.

Perhaps others can help you with more recommendations.

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the Pacific Northwest Region. It was determined at the beginning of the challenge that we would restrict the region to Oregon, Washington State, and British Columbia. That excludes California and your first book, City of Bones.

I can't determine the setting of the second book either, so it will need to be discounted too. Sorry.

No. The main page is the group's main page, not the individual's. The only way those challenges can be removed is by the moderators. When I add the one for 2019, the one for 2017 will drop off the main page.

Read a book set primarily in Iraq, Syria or Turkey?

Thanks.

message 1238: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Viji, the blurb of your first book says it's Christmas stories, so they're likely set in December.

Winter Wedding seems a bit less definite. It doesn't specify a month (I quickly read some reviews and didn't see anything there either) so could be december, but could also be another month. Maybe try reading the first few pages to see if the time of year is mentioned.

Thief of Bagdad sounds like it qualifies based on the name and blurb, but there aren't many reviews to confirm. Probably also one that you have to read to make sure the majority is indeed set in Bagdad/Iraq.

Thanks a lot, Peggy. Under the Mistletoe is a collection of Christmas stories and they are all set during Christmas period. As the MPG says Anthologies, Short Stories, I wanted to be sure before I could use that for this challenge.

Thief of Baghdad is more than 85% set in Baghdad (except for the small portion of the quest for blue rose - I am not able to make out the location of that part). The book is narrated by the Jinni of Baghdad about a cutpurse of Baghdad called Karim, Amina the Princess of Baghdad, the Grand Vizier Ghamal to the Sultan of Baghdad, Lord of Samarkand, Ruler of Samarra, Emperor of Iraq-Ajeemi. It starts in Baghdad and ends in Baghdad. I read this book in September, 2018 but as MPG is also Fantasy in addition to Action and Historical Fiction, I wanted check before I use this book.

I trust that I could use both these books for the respective tasks I had mentioned in my query. Thanks.

message 1240: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I belief short stories are fine, as long as the book meets the page requirements (which it does).

Also, if I remember correctly Janice rules that books that are fantasy but clearly set in a certain country (like a book about Greek mythology being set in Greece), will count.

Viji | 1517 comments For the Task-
LIBRA - Superhero: Judge Dredd
Read a book set between 1977 and 2000,

could any contemporary fiction/romance/mystery published during that period work?
e.g. Magic Mirror (Georgia Lee Maxwell, #1) by Michaela Thompson Magic Mirror - published in 1988 or
House Arrest by Mary Morris House Arrest - published in 1996
I did not find any time period mentioned but the publications years are between 1977 and 2000.

Request some book help for this task. Could anyone pl. help me?

Thanks.

message 1242: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think I read Tell the Wolves I'm Home for that task. I read some more that would have worked but don't remember them now.

It's definitely about the year in which the book is set. Contemporary books written between 1977 and 2000 probably are often set during that time as well, but not necessarily so. I think the year (or time period) should become clear from the story.

Maybe this list will help: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

There's probably also something like that for the 90s. Double check the book you pick though, the lists always have some mistakes.

message 1243: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19315 comments Viji - Just checking, you said you just read Thief of Baghdad in September. Are you planning to re-read it next year?

message 1244: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Thanks for answering Viji's questions, Peggy.

The only book that is problematic is The Winter Wedding as it doesn't specify in the book blurb that it's set in December. You've read it, Viji, so you should be able to determine what month it was set in. If the book itself doesn't mention it, then it can't be confirmed that it fits the task, so it would be disallowed.

You don't need a ruling on every book. If you've read it and it clearly fits the criteria, then I will take your word for it. We work on the honour system here. A book that is short stories all set at Christmas time, doesn't require a ruling. A book set 85% in Bagdad is more than the required 50% and doesn't require a ruling.

Just watch the page length, as books must be 175 pages long according to the edition you read. Use the hardcover edition to verify Kindle and ebooks as their page lengths don't always match the printed book.

The challenge is asking that these books be set in the time period. It's not asking for books published in the time period.
