This thread is open to discuss Beneath a Scarlet Sky, by Mark T. Sullivan

Synopsis:
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He’s a normal Italian teenager—obsessed with music, food, and girls—but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior.

In an attempt to protect him, Pino’s parents force him to enlist as a German soldier—a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler’s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich’s most mysterious and powerful commanders.

Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share

What is a buddy read? How does it work?

Read all about buddy reads here!

This is an Informal Buddy Read
An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

Simran (just1morechaptr) I'm sorry I'm late. This is the first time I've joined a group here so wasn't familiar with the notification system. Have you guys started?

message 6: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I haven't. I will today. I don't think Brooke has either or she would have posted.
We read and come back here and talk about it. We use spoiler tags so we don't give anything away.
Looking forward to discussing the book with you both!

message 7: by Simran (new)

Simran (just1morechaptr) Ok. Do we have a certain amount of pages to read per day or something liks that?

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Read as much as you like! We will catch up. I did start it but I didn't get far. I'll do my best to read more tonight( lol maybe I can sneak some in tomorrow )

Laura | 9707 comments Brooke how are you feeling?

Brooke | 1199 comments Laura, it has been rough. I am getting better, though! I am still only eating liquids & mashed potatoes, but I think I might be able to eat more by Monday. I have been sleeping a ton - I thought I would be awake more.

message 14: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Awww. Hope you feel better soon!

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Hi guys, I ' m still trying to read this one. I 'm not making good progress! Anyone else start? Simran how are you making out?

Brooke | 1199 comments I haven’t made it very far either. But my mother left this morning (it was hard to read while she was here because I was either napping or she was talking) and I go back to work tomorrow, so I should do better this week. Being back on a regular schedule should help.

message 17: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 771 comments I did start but didn’t get very far but should have some time this week and weekend

Brooke | 1199 comments I finally am getting back to this one. I kept getting distracted by other books to complete 2017 challenges and library books that needed to be read.

Parts I and II (chapters 1-12
I am always amazed at what people had to go through during WWII. I've read numerous WWII historical fiction novels, but this one is from the Italian perspective, which is new to me. I'm enjoying reading about how people felt about the Nazis and what they did just to survive. It is hard to imagine going through all of that as a teenager like Pino and Mimo; they had to grow up too fast!
(view spoiler)

Laura | 9707 comments I'm hoping to get back to this one soon!

Laura | 9707 comments Do you guys want to start 2018 off with a buddy read? Any suggestions?

Going to try and catch up with this one!

Are you liking it, Brooke?

message 22: by Brooke (last edited Dec 20, 2017 01:47PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brooke | 1199 comments I am liking it! I'll probably finish it tomorrow.

Another buddy read in January works for me. I have Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz and We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter from the library that I need to read. I got The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman from Book of the Month, a friend loaned me The Kept Woman (Will Trent, #8) by Karin Slaughter and The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter if you are in the mood for a thriller and haven't read those yet. Or, if none of those work, I'm open to pretty much anything else! :-)

message 23: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I put Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz on hold ( I 'm next in queue. It was supposed to be due 6 days ago!)
I put an inter-library loan request for We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter . I don't know when that will arrive.

I'd like to read the Alice Hoffman book but have to read the first one! The Karin Slaughter books don't interest me. Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter is my one Slaughter book I've read.

I have My Husband's Wife by Jane Corry to read?

message 24: by Brooke (last edited Dec 20, 2017 08:27PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brooke | 1199 comments I don't have My Husband's Wife by Jane Corry , but I can probably get a copy. It looks like it is available at my library, so when I get back from the family Christmas I will see about getting a copy.

Want to start with Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz ? Based on the holiday craziness, maybe Jan 2nd would be a good day to start it? It will be my first Koontz novel. Several people I know loved this, so I am looking forward to reading it.

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Alissa, want to read Odd Thomas with us?

I have to have My Husband's Wife by Jane Corry back by Jan 9( likely no renewals) if you can' t get it before then no worries.

What about this one? The Lightkeeper's Daughters by Jean E. Pendziwol I'm next in queue? Hopefully it arrives in the next 3 weeks!!

I 'll ask for a thread for the Dean Koontz novel. I read his Frankenstein series and really enjoyed it!

Brooke | 1199 comments I should be able to get My Husband's Wife by Jane Corry when I get back from my mom's house. My library has several available copies, so I'll request it and pick it up late next week.

Alissa | 771 comments Laura I was able to get My Husband’s Wife so I can read that one with you if you wanted to start after Christmas

message 34: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Alissa I'll ask for a thread for my husband's wife for the 26th. Start when we can.

Had to wait on Overdrive for the Alice Hoffman books. Practical Magic will be available for me to pick up tonight after work. I'm next in queue for the 2nd one! Let me know when you get it Alissa.
