Rachel Vail, The Friendship Ring. It was a four book series. They've since been republished as regular sized paperbacks, but the original set were short and wide and thick.

I believe one cover was green with cherries on it, and the other was pink something ballet-related. Although it was a series, I don't think they were meant to be read in a particular order.
I read the two books in 2000/2001, and I believe it was fairly new at the time. So probably published late 90s. I believe the author was American - the books definitely seemed like they took place in the US.
Also, the books themselves were oddly-shaped; my best guess is 6 inches wide and 4 inches tall.
