SOLVED. Group of friends meet at inn after one dies. Fantasy with wizard. [s]

U apologize in advance. I read this book in middle school (now 27). I remember very little, so I don't expect much. Here's what I remember. A group of friends meet at an inn after one of their group has dies. This person was a wizard and left a staff with one of the others in the group. They find the staff splits in two and reveals a piece of a cube (i think) they defeated in their youth. They go on a quest to defeat the same mysterious cube again. It's a fantasy. I was in middle school in 1999 so i wouldn't expect I published before that since we were a poor school. Any help would be appreciated!

May be a long shot, and I could be remembering incorrectly, but could it be one of the stories in the above book? I seem to remember it being described as kind of an inn.
This is the book I thought of when I read your request but I read it a long long time ago.
The quest thing rings a bell too.

I looked into that book and it isn't it :(. What I remember as far as people is two women and three men i think. I'm sorry again about so little info on it
