SOLVED. girl/boy finds another dimension, one word title that begins with "A", impressionistic cover [s]

Alright, here is the thing. It was a long time since i read it, basically the only thing I remember is that I thought it was amazing at the time. But I think it was a girl that found another world or dimension where there were many different creatures. The thing i remember most clearly about the book is actually the cover. The title (I'm pretty sure) is one word that begins with an A. The cover art is a series of square portraits of characters in the book, or so it seems. The style of painting is very impressionistic and almost has a van gogh character about it. I know this is not much to go on, but after spending a day trying to formulate the above information in a google search, I had to look for help! Thanks in advance!
