Kristan Hoffman (kristanhoffman) | 15 comments Hello! I need some help cleaning up this list, please: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/46...

Please remove the following books which do not meet the criteria:

- Fears Of Darkness by J.M. Northup (reason: Young Adult protag) - note: this one is listed twice
- A Prisoner Within by J.M. Northup (reason: Young Adult protag)
- The Hungry Wolves of Van Diemen's Land by Paul Christensen (reason: no indication of New Adult protags or themes)
- Under Lock and Key: The Experiment by Robin Geesman (reason: genre is horror/thriller, not New Adult)

Thank you!

re 791, the edition you want merged doesn't have the same cover as the default. the one you found has a blurb from Linda Bray on the cover. i found a pb ACE from Simon Pulse that also has the same blurb:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

but it's the wrong publisher. for now, i've marked it as an unknown ACE.

Guilty hehe. It was showing that the second edition only had 2 ratings so in theory I could delete myself. It seems not.

message 763: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8575 comments i believe it had 2 ratings, but more than 5 shelvings. hence the need for a super. the number of ratings can be deceiving, and you can't see total shelves unless you're on the combine page.

Russell Whitehead I need help. I believe I inadvertently created an extra addition of this book,

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

when adding it to Goodreads. Can someone please take a look at it and delete the extra edition if necessary. I read the help files about merging instead of combining. Merging didn't seem to be an option.

Thanks
Russell

the_cat | 388 comments This is a little odd
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
when I try to add the ASIN: B00DCTJ93K to the first edition if says it already exists and takes me to the second edition.
I think they are both the same but I do not dare to delete that ISBN

this is no longer being imported like this (as i have understood) so coming upon this is rare

merged 800

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments #772 - Seams to have been skipped. So, here it is again.

An interesting one.

https://www.goodreads.com/work/editions/25078578-the-way-out-kick-starting-capitalism-to-save-our-economic-ass?expanded=true

Looks to be the same edition with the same cover. If you follow the links to Amazon, they both show the same pub date.

One was imported, the other created. On amazon and on here one has an ISBN13 and one has an ASIN, but both have the same ISBN10.

message 771: by Philip (new)

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments Looks like same book, just one has a truncated ISBN13 in the ISBN10 field

I think you're right that books aren't importing that way anymore, but it's not (yet) rare to stumble upon those, either. Many of the Kindle books I have in my collection have had this problem, even those I've been shelving today.

But it is an easy fix, since, as you said, all you have to do is click "edit" and "save" and it automatically switches to the ASIN.

Paul | 11 comments Tried to merge these two books but unable as one is the Most Popular edition.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
and
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
According to World Cat
https://www.worldcat.org/title/lost-c...
the book has an ISBN10 of 0195182499 and an ISBN13 of 9780195182491 which explains the two editions.
Please merge to a single edition.

re 812, reverting a bad cover change on the truncated ISBN edition revealed what might be an ACE. that combined with different pub dates leads me to believe the duplicate should be kept. recombined. once the ACE was recombined, i discovered a dupe of the ACE and queued that for deletion as well.

message 782: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andrea_b) | 571 comments if the main placeholder is set as a paperback for whatever reason, but on the set release date the book is really coming out as a hardcover, should it be merged with the later created hardcover edition (with isbn)?

re 815, IMO, i wouldn't merge anything. i'd simply remove the bogus pub date (and replace it with the real one, once it's known). it's not a librarian's responsibility to try to anticipate why users (authors or readers) choose to shelve/make default certain editions. we just make sure the data is right.

OK, so if someone sets both "Paperback" and the Hardcover's release date at the same time for an upcoming book, we keep the "Paperback" designation and remove the publication date? I guess in that case we should remove the cover too (but it's the main edition and people have already shelved it based on those things). We don't know what the Paperback's cover will be or when its release date will be... (or if there will be a paperback edition at all.)

I guess my instinct would be to modify the paperback designation to Hardcover and merge, but I think how to go about these cases is unclear.

(For reference, this is the real, actual book I listed myself and is tied to the series if it's better to combine them: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... )

message 798: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8575 comments re 831, only the first was a duplicate, which I have merged. the second is a different, valid edition and should stay.

the last two needed combining, not merging, as they are both also valid editions.

message 799: by Philip (new)

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments #832 - Looks like that was created by book import. If the ISBN was assigned to the one you created it probably would not have created it. Of course that assumes that the ebook edition you created is supposed to have the ISBN (9781631053061) that is on that imported edition.

message 800: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8575 comments re 832, Goodreads adds books via large database imports periodically, one of which is Smashwords. That's the source of the new edition. I have merged them for you. In future, if you find this merging process annoying, add the ISBN as soon as you know it to the book record you create. Doing so will prevent the database import from creating a new record.
