I've read the first 300 or so pages before, so I'll just start from where I'm up to. And I only really plan on reading #1 at this point XD

Who knows when I'll be starting. Sorry I'm still stuck on Wise Man's Fear (only actually 150pg in out of 999...) because I had to pick up another book for a challenge. So I've paused WMF, but I should be finished that one in around 2 weeks... Sorry! But then I'll jump into this!

No worries. I know how it is to have a big book that you just want to finish already. I also didn't get this one started as planned. I was entertaining all weekend and some people think it is rude to ignore them while having my nose in a book - imagine!

I'll get this started within the next few days. Jump in when you get a chance. I'm starting to see what you meant about BRs taking over your life. I should have listened to your warning! LOL.

XD Yes they do, hence why I've cut back now. Well kind of. But yeah I'm still only around 20% into Wise Man's Fear. But I think when you read my in GoT (I'm 30%) I'll alternate between books so you don't get lonely.

Pg 103 - this is slower going for me, and I feel like I need a diagram to keep all the characters straight.

I know it will get better if I just stick with it.

Yes, assuming you haven't watched the tv show? You might struggle XD Maybe be good to just watch the first episode to get a description of all of the characters and their relationships.

I'll just keep up with you because I want to read other books, because my shelf is calling to me XD No clue where you're up to now, so when you see this can you please let me know? I'll read at your pace. And just wondering how many pages does your edition have? Because if our editions have different page numbers then your updates are irrelevant to me. Any way you could update in %?

My version has 694 pages, including the appendices. I can put in terms of % complete, no problem. My book is due back at the library on the 6th, so I hope to be finished by then and get the next book.

Pg. 211 (25%) - Finally far enough in to have some things happening! (view spoiler)[ Seriously, people who could throw a 7 year old off a building NEED to be stopped! I almost cried at that part. At least Bran has woken up. I wonder if he will miraculously heal at some point - or if he will end up riding his wolf instead of a horse??

Dany - for a family that is supposed to be "bad", I really like her. I'm glad she finally stood up to her stupid bully brother. It wouldn't bother me if someone just offed him. I also can't wait for her dragon to hatch! Though, if her new khal-people think all dragons are evil, I worry that will not bode well for the hatchling.

Jon - I like him too, poor bastard. He seems poised to progress through the ranks and lead the Wall. I hope he continues to be loyal to his family. He seems like he is going to be more important than at present.

Tyrion - really not sure what to think of him just yet. I mean, he is a Lannister, but I think he realizes that they are not good. I think he will be playing both sides soon if he isn't already. As a dwarf, he will need to be smart and just stay out of the way for a while. I was surprised he didn't try to kill Bran again, but that would have made it obvious, I guess.

And can I just say "Ew" with regard to the queen and her brother? I am grossed out by incest. I thought we were going to see that between Dany and her brother too, and I was cringing at every page turn thinking it was going to happen. Yuck! (hide spoiler)]

Pg 257 (28%) God, I despise Sansa. She is so dumb.

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you were way ahead of me. We can hold off on book 2. Lord knows I have a mountain of books on my nightstand!

I will continue with this one so I can return to the library on time. I am reading 3 others at the same time, so will probably only read 100 pages a day or so.

I finally figured out how to change the edition I am reading so my updates % read is correct.

Pg 284 (41%) - (view spoiler)[ Tyrion - I just don't get him. He seems to hate his brother and sister, yet still loves and is loyal to the family?? They certainly aren't kind to him. I do believe him that he didn't hire the thug to kill Bran, but he obviously knows it was the queen or his brother. He seems to have more integrity than the rest of his family - it makes me wonder why he is on their side at all. Is he just playing along?

All this intrigue is exciting, but the deck seems stacked against the honest/good guys. I hope the next few pages either introduce a new ally for them, or someone changes sides. I like an even battle. (hide spoiler)]

Ned - he is the next chapter. I hope while he sleeps, he pieces the puzzle together, though I do not think that the King would believe him.

Maybe I'll just read 3 chapters a day of both this and Wise Man's Fear so that I'm actually reading them still, and then my leftover time I'll spend on Inkheart.

3 chapters are about 80 pages! Seriously, go at your own pace. I am not usually on the same page as my buddies. I'm usually behind! I just click on the spoiler link when I've gotten to about the same place, and then comment. If I'm ahead, I go back and comment when he/she does, that way we still have a little discussion.

pg 386 (56%) - (view spoiler)[ There is one kind of character that I have absolutely no tolerance for - unstable STUPID women. Caetlyn's sister is definitely one of those. Sure enough, she is outwitted by the Imp, ruins Caetlyn's chance for justice, and from the sound of it will end up losing her stronghold in the end. Idiot!

Robert annoys me too. Ned keeps reminiscing about what a great guy he was, but it doesn't seem like that was the case at all. It seems like all the bad qualities he is displaying now were there all along, it's just that being King allows him to display them without any recourse. One thing I really don't get - he hates his wife. Truly that is not hard to see, yet he goes along with what she wants 9 times out of 10 - and the 10th she has manipulated him into thinking it is the opposite of what she wants, so she is really still getting her way. I don't like either of them.

What will happen next? How many books are in this series again?
I feel like nothing will ever really be settled, certainly not in this 700 pages. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah I just found that out. I only read 2 chapters yesterday because chapter 3 was like 25 pages. I don't like Catelyn and Ned's views. Boring.

Pg 462 (67%) - (view spoiler)[ I am having a hard time not screaming at the book everytime it is from Sansa's perspective. She is so stupid! I can't believe that Ned and Catelyn would have a child like this. Even little Bran has more sense than this girl.

Worried what has become of Ned. I sense that he is a key character and will be needed in the pages ahead. Plus, the author didn't say he was killed off. I'm hopeful that he is still alive.

Dany - if there was ever a character that could redeem the disgrace of a bloodline, I hope it is her. She seems to have a decent head on her shoulders, especially now that she is free of the influence of her brother. I see a bit of the honor that people like Ned would be drawn to, should she ever return to the kingdom. Hopefully, she can pass that honor and wisdom down to her son. (hide spoiler)]

I'm undecided whether I will finish this up tomorrow, or just renew it at the library. Leaning towards the later so I can be more leisurely about reading it.

Pg 574 (78%) - (view spoiler)[ Well, I'm not sure how Ned is going to get himself out of that dungeon! I would really hate it if he sells out and swallows his honor.

I still can't stand Sansa.

And where is Arya? I do hope her "dancing instructor" made it out alive since she still has so much to learn (even if she has been married off to a Frey so her brother could cross a stupid river). And is it too much to hope that she finds her wolf on her way home? There is nothing like knowledge of steel and a deadly wolf to bring to a marriage bed - HA! (hide spoiler)]

You read sooo fast, especially as it's such an intimidating book! Good news is I just read another 40 pages of Wise Man's Fear, so I am getting back into it :D

Ha. I've been doing a lot of BRs with Alaina - I DO NOT read fast compared to her! Actually, I usually read a chapter over breakfast, one over lunch, and then a couple at night. It makes the pages go by.

Finished - (view spoiler)[ Whew, that was a long ride through many pages. I'm not sure I feel satisfied with the end. In fact, I don't feel like I got anything resembling an ending. I know, I know, that is often how it goes when an author writes the first of many books in a series. But usually, you get something wrapped up before you are forced to move to book 2. The only things resolved are that the dragons have been birthed, and poor Ned is dead. Everything else is in limbo. It's highly frustrating! (hide spoiler)]

Not sure when I will pick up book 2, but I will eventually. Let me know if you are inclined when you get to the end of this one.

Oh holy moly you got it finished! Don't wait for me, just continue when you feel like it. And I'll see if I feel like it when you do as well XD But I'm definitely wanting to get through the series for a change. I don't want to continuously re-read the first book.

Prologue / Chapters 1-4

(view spoiler)[Re-reading the prologue after so long gave me chills. It's so brilliant and really sets the tone of the book.

I didn't realise that so many of the characters in the book (such as the Stark kids) were so young and had their ages lifted for the tv show. I'm trying to go into it as if it were my first time reading it and I hadn't seen the tv show but I keep comparing the two and I know the major plot points.

I forgot how much I hate Viserys. I hate hate hate that man. His treatment of Dany is uncalled for and he's just trash. Hate him.

(view spoiler)[ So much foreshadowing during the prologue and the first chapters. It makes me remember why this series is so successful.

The age difference between the show and book are really drastic. I kinda find it good (because it's more appropriate for that age)

And Viserys looks like a spoiled brat to me. That boy wouldn't survive 1 day alone
