Shelley | 428 comments I have had the hardest time with this prompt. I read Moby-Dick or, The Whale for the Popsugar challenge, which I enjoyed more than I expected. I'm trying to stick to the rough timeline here, so over the course of the year I've read a few others that would have worked with this prompt: Black Powder War, Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane, Deep Wizardry. Didn't think I'd have a problem.

I choose In Other Lands, which was just ok. Yes it was a unique story about a fairy tale LGBTQ high school romance, but it was still high school romance drama. That said there were only 5 pages about mermaids and in the water. It definitely does not count for this!

I scrounged around and read The Call of Cthulhu to make up for it. It was actually pretty good. It's a quick creepy read for anyone doing a Halloween theme this month.

It looks like all of HP Lovecraft's stories are on his website. Here's the link for Cthulhu http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/t....

The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue

- Why did you pick this book?
I like books that show ordinary people showing great heroism

I read The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White.

- Why did you pick this book?
I enjoy historical fiction, especially historical mysteries. Most of this tale took place aboard the ill-fated Lusitania as it crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

- Why did you pick this book? It has been on my list for awhile and seemed a like a perfect fit.

Emily Gartland Sailing Alone around the World

I read Sailing Alone around the World. It was written by the first man to sail alone around the world. It doesn't sound very exciting but it was actually really fascinating and laugh-out-loud funny in quite a few spots.

I read The Corpse with the Diamond Hand which takes place on a cruise ship. Oh boy did I hate this. It was just so poorly written.

Emma (factandfable) | 182 comments I picked Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, which is a book about a team of scientists searching for killer mermaids.

Despite the premise, it was fascinating, terrifying and really fun!

- Why did you pick this book? I picked it because most of it takes place on the river for a white water rafting trip that goes awry. It seemed like it was a good suspense book that would read quick and it definitely did that.

Why did you pick this book? The story was right up my alley: about a jaded Londoner who chucks it all, landing himself in a remote part of Scotland to care for otters as pets. The story was published in 1960, a time when such activities were a bit rare for the average Joe.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Extraordinary Voyages, #6) by Jules Verne

Why did you pick this book?
It’s a classsic that I haven’t read yet, so this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

My museum takes care of the boat in the book- so if you're ever on the Cape, come visit!

This is my last week to read and I've been having a tough time finding the right book- I know, I live on the ocean, this should be easy. I've decided to read something that will teach me something I've always been curious about- The Tide: The Science and Stories Behind the Greatest Force on Earth. I might finally understand what is going on out there.

edited the next day: Nope, changing that. See that The Tide fits into a challenge for next year and the library just decided to give me Lake Success so I'm doing to that for this week instead and the Tides will pop up in STEM week next year,
