Tami (tamidale) Easiest prompt ever! :)

Reyna | 50 comments I love this prompt! I'm going to choose from this list of books that I had penciled in for 2017's challenge, but ended up going with a different book.

The Last Letter from Your Lover
Lab Girl
Beezus and Ramona
First Light
Small Great Things
Girl in Translation
The Bonesetter's Daughter
The Paris Wife
Night
Pictures of You
The Snow Child

That's what I was thinking, too. I still have my initial list of the possible books for each prompt, so I'll probably just go back to it & pick one that didn't make the final cut. A lot of those weren't because I didn't want to read that book, but because I had easier access to a different one, so I went with it instead.

Swimming Lessons! It's been on pre-order for ages and I should finally receive it this February!

message 8: by Brandyn (new)

Brandyn (brandy_k) | 82 comments Like everyone else I have plenty of options for this one, but I was sure I was finally going to read Rebecca this year (there's still 2 months!) so if I don't get it done that will definitely be my choice.

message 10: by Cornerofmadness (new)

Cornerofmadness | 805 comments I have four rooms and a storage locker full of things for this category.

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 128 comments I have a looooot of books that could fit into this prompt, but I will probably read Harry Potter: A History of Magic

message 13: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments Now that Overdrive has the history function, I’ll use t to find something I borrowed but didn’t get to.

message 14: by Tytti (last edited Nov 12, 2017 10:55AM) (new)

Tytti | 355 comments I have either a lot of books I have been planning to read or none really because I don't really think like that, so this prompt feels a bit stupid for me... But there are a couple of books that I have been wanting to read (and fit in prompts for 2018) but I want to read the first book about the same character before those. It's not really a series, the books are standalones, but the person's background does get referenced. It also doesn't fit in other prompts, so...

message 15: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments Yes, for me this is basically a free space as well. So having Overdrive’s function of remembering what books I checked out is helpful. I often fail to get to books before the loan expires.

message 16: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) This is a bit of a freebie. But I'm going to make it a point to read The Casual Vacancy since I've had it slotted for prompts the last 2 years and replaced it both times.

message 17: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinajm) | 80 comments These are a few on my list that I meant to read this year:

Pachinko (this could fit into author of a different enthnicity than me, also)

Sourdough
The Hate U Give

message 18: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 8 comments Little Women :-)

message 19: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Lanton (ruthla8) | 177 comments Ack! How am I going to do this one? I don't really set out lists of books to read ahead of time- instead I select books from the library that look interesting, and then see what prompts they fit into. By the middle of the year I was seeking out books specifically to fit certain prompts, but I was still making that decision on a book-by-book basis, getting help on this website and then reserving the specific title, or searching out the library with the prompt in mind.

So, since I never had a list of books "to be read in 2017" how can I have any that I didn't read?

Oh, I've got it! Take out a stack of books in mid to late December and don't finish them all before January. Whichever book I read first in January will fulfill this prompt. I just have to figure out which book to count if I'm in the middle of one on December 31st- do I count the book I started in 2017 but finished in 2018 or the first book I start in 2018?

message 20: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments I often don’t get to all my library books before hey have to be returned, so I’ll be reading one of those.

Though I also often see books and put them on my library wish list. I guess I didn’t 100% mean to read them this year, but clearly I meant to read them at some point, so that may work too.

Caitlin (catielane) | 60 comments I really wanted to read Mr. Penumbras 24 hour bookstore by robin Sloan this year

Personally, I count when I finish the book and mark it as Read on goodreads. Last year a few of us started the 800-page book in December and marked it off this year's list when we finished in January.

Hahaha I was going to suggest checking out a book at the very end of 2017 but not reading it until 2018.

I **LOVE** that book so even if you don't use it for this category you should read it and put it as recommended by a fellow Popsugar-er.

message 26: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 767 comments I started Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned" at the end of 2016, and forgot about it when the 2017 challenge came into my life...so I'm going to finish it for this challenge. A bit sneaky, but it'll be a push for me to complete the challenge so any little helps!

Laura • lauralovestoread | 101 comments Sad I didn’t get a chance to read Into the Water Sing, Unburied, Sing or The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo plus a whole bunch more, but these were top of the list to read for this prompt!

message 28: by Anabell (new)

Anabell | 355 comments I have a lot of series im reading so when I have filled out prompt no. 3 I am just going to use this one for the next in the series. This is pretty much a wild card for me.

message 29: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Wilson (captaincold) | 27 comments My Sister Rosa my daughters canoe team partner is named Rosa, and Rosas sister is on the team, so this has been a running joke! Sounds really good!!

message 32: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 608 comments I was Planning on reading Hollow City yesterday as my last book of 2017, but it was too busy of a day to get any reading done. So....Starting it today and counting it towards this prompt.

message 35: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm in the middle of Two By Two. I kept putting it off last year because it seemed so long and I wasn't the biggest fan of the last couple of Nicholas Sparks books I read, but it's pretty good so far.

message 36: by Liza (last edited Jan 04, 2018 09:44AM) (new)

Liza (lizae) | 56 comments My friend's book Satellite was released in December and I had other stuff on my plate so I didn't read it right away like I meant to.

I also wanted to read Lab Girl but I think I can fit it elsewhere. And What Happened, but I'm still not sure if I can read that without rage sobbing.

message 37: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 13 comments I read New World Fairy Tales which was on my plan for 2017 shelf but I didn't get to it.

message 38: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 427 comments First prompt done. I started Blindness at the end of December and have just finished it.

message 39: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Vandever (laurenalyssav) | 11 comments Murder on the Orient Express!

message 41: by Jess (new)

Jess (seejessread) | 248 comments I read The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1) by Katherine Arden for this prompt. I actually started it last year and put it away after fifty pages. Decided to give it another go. Finished 1/10

message 42: by Laura (new)

Laura (piggyb73) | 36 comments I just finished turtles all the way down. I kept meaning to pick it up last year but I never did

message 43: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Hummel (chummel87) Decided in 2017 that I didn’t know enough about George Washington! Am reading 1776 now - well written, but I’ve heard some criticism from history “purists.” Any thoughts?

message 44: by Melanie (new)

Melanie McKay (mgmcgee) | 41 comments I'm reading Rogue Warrior by Richard Marcinko. It's an autobiography and he's the founder of Navy SEAL Team Six. It's an interesting book now that I got into it but not for people who don't enjoy military topics since so much of it is about his tours in Vietnam.

message 45: by Diane (new)

Diane Lupton | 136 comments I read The Stand for this prompt. It is over 1400 pages long and I started it in December of 2017 so I definitely meant to read it then. I would recommend but be aware of the length of the book.

message 46: by Dedra ~ A Book Wanderer (last edited Jan 26, 2018 04:11PM) (new)

Dedra ~ A Book Wanderer (abookwanderer) | 190 comments I just finished Gizelle's Bucket List: My Life with a Very Large Dog for this prompt and it was so very good. But it would fit for so many other prompts as well. A book about death or grief, a book with an animal in the title, a book about mental health?? Just be prepared to read it with tissues!

message 47: by Jess (new)

Jess (seejessread) | 248 comments The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1) by Katherine Arden

I meant to read this last year but I just wasn't in the mood for it. I started but quit after 50 pages. I definitely wanted to read it this year so I made it the first choice for a book club I was organizing. It was so beautiful and fun to read.

Completed 1/10/18

message 48: by Daniplx (new)

Daniplx (danipx) | 12 comments I read The Sun and Her Flowers. I had started it last year, but never got around to finishing it.

message 49: by Megan (new)

Megan | 361 comments I read Scorched Earth: How the Fires of Yellowstone Changed America

Was more about the history of fire policy and the beginnings of the NPS then it was the 1988 Yellowstone fire.

message 50: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinajm) | 80 comments So many possibilities, but I just finished Sourdough by Robin Sloan for this one.
