Nominations open -- December 2017 group reads: Authors with last names beginning with "M"
Thanks for taking care of the December challenge for me, Nancy. One less thing to focus on while I'm visiting my Dad.. :) I'll make a nomination though,
The Fiend by Margaret Millar.
Bonnie wrote: "I'll nominate Exit West by Mohsin Hamid"
My error, Bonnie -- it should be "last names beginning with M."
Nominate another book, please. I wouldn't have let it in the mix anyway, since it's not at all a crime novel.

My pleasure, absolutely. I hope Millar gets lots of votes.

I'll catch up with this and all other threads tomorrow - we had a medical emergency in our house Monday & Tuesday so I'm having a personal detox day today to help ease the stress. Everything's fine but I'll send out member emails, start posting everyone's nominations etc. tomorrow. I just need the day. Thanks.

If it's an author we haven't read, or a series we haven't read, the first book is usually best. I just read a book that was number 7 (I didn't know) , and all was well until I reached the end, and realized that stuff the main character had done in the previous books was possibly a factor in how the author ended this one. So to me, at least, it makes a difference. You can always check the group book shelf if you're not sure.

Thanks for the update; sure hope all is well!
I would like to nominate The Husband's Secret
by Liane Moriarty. I know the group has already read Big Little Lies, so if you would like me to pick a book from an author that hasn't been read before instead, I can do that.

Since it wasn't that long ago for Liane Moriarty, let's pass on this one, Natalie. Fee free to pick another one though!!

Sorry -- someone beat you to John Marrs already. Another choice??

I'll nominate The Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty. It's a favorite series of a mystery-loving friend that I've been wanting to read.
I'd like to nominate Two Kinds of Truth as it's the last book in the Harry Bosh series by Michael Connelly just released at the end of October, so just a few days ago practically, so why not go for it... now, I'm gonna get my hands on this one anyway, but I was thinking maybe other group members would like to chat about it too...

Well, I'd love to help you out here, Gabriel, but it's all about authors whose last names end in "M."

I nominate "I See You" by Clare MacKintosh. I'm new to the group so you may have read this already (sorry in advance!)
Suzy wrote: "I'll nominate The Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty. It's a favorite series of a mystery-loving friend that I've been wanting to read."I read that earlier this year, really enjoyed it but I have the Ngaio Marsh on my to read list so I will be voting for that one :-)
I am getting set to read Palace of Treason (2) by Jason Matthews because Red Sparrow (1) was so good. I'd nominate either one...Russian spy/CIA thriller--(Red Sparrow about to be out in movie theaters)
Insidious Intent by Val McDermid. Its not the first in the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series, but I really enjoy this Author.

been there, done that!

Like Liane Moriarty, we've read a Val McDermid novel this year. Can you find another book to nominate?? Thanks!

Once again, I'm very, very sorry, but right there in message #1 I did say we were looking to nominate books written by an author with a last name starting with M. Another choice, maybe??

Sorry - I missed it.
Oh sure. I'll selfishly choose the 2nd in the series then since I haven't read it and actually have a copy :) Palace of Treason By Jason Matthews
I'm nominating Deadly Kiss by Bob Bickford. The book is a fascinating tale based on a real-life incident. The author's lush prose and touches of the supernatural create an unforgettable pastiche. It's no wonder the book won the prestigious Best First Novel of 2017 from International Thriller Writers.

You know the drill --
1. do NOT nominate your own book
2. do NOT have your publicist nominate your book
3. if you nominate the winning book, you are the moderator for the discussion. If you don't want to lead the discussion, don't nominate a book.
that's it -- now, pick good ones!!
