A children's science series. Black and white hardcover with varying subjects. A bunch of questions and quick blurbs and black and white illustrations throughout. I would've read it in the early 2000s. They were great!

Maybe the Tell Me Why: Answers to Hundreds of Questions Children Ask series? It's an older series, but it looks like it was republished in the 1990s: The Big Book of Tell Me Why: Answers to Hundreds of Questions Children Ask
