Zaz | 2969 comments The suggested list is the general US one, but if you want to use another list (see bellow), no problem! Note that Amazon doesn't know how to count/webdesign so on Amazon, the full lists aren't always displayed.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Breath, Eyes, Memory has been on my TBR forever
also possibly Bel Canto. I own both of them

message 3: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 242 comments I’ve been meaning to read The Poisonwood Bible for 5 years, so I think that will be my choice.

message 4: by Krissy (new)

Krissy (krissystewart) | 407 comments I'll be reading:
Middlesex
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

Because it's been on my TBR for a while now

message 5: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Love The Poisonwood Bible and Middlesex.... great picks

message 6: by Shelly (new)

Shelly | 67 comments I also love The Poisonwood Bible and recommend it to many friends. And. . . Middlesex is on my list of books to read for three challenges next year---a book with an LGBTQ protagonist, a book from Amazon's 100 books to read in a lifetime list, and a book set in Michigan.

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I'm so torn about this category. My initial interpretation was that it was strictly Amazon's Top 100 (not the genre-specific ones), and I've been dreading it since I've already read most of the books I'm interested in. I'm having trouble getting past the idea that the other lists apply, I guess because of the way the prompt was originally worded.

message 8: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm going to go with the original list for this one - it's one I'm working through anyway. I've read 53/100 so far. There's a few non-fiction on there that I still haven't read, so I'll probably end up going with one of those.

message 9: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments Three I want to read are: The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, Man's Search for Meaning, and Interpreter Of Maladies

Laura • lauralovestoread | 89 comments I can’t believe that I still haven’t read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone so this has to be the time!!

ENJOY! I'm so jealous that you get to read and experience it for the first time! (And good luck fitting the rest of the books in the series into the prompts this year, because you will definitely want to keep reading!)

Laura • lauralovestoread | 89 comments Thanks Emily! Just realized I could also use HP for the fire element challenge so I may just try that. Glad to hear you are a fan!

Chamber of Secrets could be a book with a location in the title, and Prison of Azkaban (or any of them, really) can be centered around a secret. Also, all of them could fall in the high expectations, because they are so hyped.

message 14: by Mel (new)

Mel | 177 comments I'm probably going to wind up reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao for this category.

message 16: by Hellie (new)

Hellie | 35 comments Gone Girl
I've decided to read the books in the order they 'grab' me to best enjoy them. Looking forward to this as my second book in the challenge.

message 17: by Angelique (new)

Angelique I think I'm 1 of the few who haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird yet, so I'll be reading the number 1 on this list :-).

I just read it last month and I loved it. Enjoy :-)

I actually just read it last year. I didn't read a lot of the classics growing up. I'm trying to make up for that now!

a

I was so disappointed. It's a bit like Bridget Jones finds a kitchen knife and runs riot. A good plot but the characters are self indulgent and I couldn't form a liking for any of them.

Erica | 555 comments I just bought Life After Life, so I think I’ll read that.

message 24: by Carol (new)

Carol | 67 comments A childhood favourite

Anna Sewell – Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

message 25: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Audiogirl.booking.it (audiogirlbookingit) | 488 comments I choose an audio version of....The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales. It was from the Amazon top 100 list. I had owned this book for a while and thought this was a great way to get me to do it!

message 26: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments What are you reading for this category?
The Wind in the Willows

Why did you choose this book?
I limited myself to the original list that I think was posted when the prompt was first suggested. I meant to read this book last year but kept putting it off, and there was nothing else on the list that really stood out to me at all. There are a few that are on my TBR but nothing that I was very motivated to read.

message 27: by Ashley (new)

Ashley White (celadore) | 73 comments I've narrowed it down to The Little Prince or The Great Gatsby.. both on my list for a while!

I just finished A Wrinkle in Time Movie Tie-In Edition (whyyyy does it only allow me to link to the movie tie-in?) for my book club, and this is really the best category for it, I think?

(I thought about using it for the Air prompt, but I felt like that might be cheating just a bit, and I have a few books on my TBR that I could use for air.)

message 29: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments What are you reading for this category?
Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth

Why did you choose this book?
I've always thought I should read it but never had. Glad I finally did - I liked it!

message 30: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 441 comments The Little Prince was the first title on the list that I hadn't already read so that's what I went with.

message 31: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments Old Man's War was the book I choose for this prompt. I had some other ones picked for this one but I really wanted to read this one. It hit the spot and has broke my long term reading slump.

message 32: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 0 comments I read Cutting for Stone as it was set in Ethiopia and had good reviews. I was intrigued about a story from a doctor's viewpoint.

message 33: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (tricia_nelson) I read A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle in preparation for the movie coming out. Wish I had read this when I was younger, but enjoyed it nonetheless!

Evelyn | 308 comments - What are you reading for this category?
Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

I have seen this book in best book lists.

Evelyn, I just read Interpreter of Maladies. I've never been a big short story fan, but I really ended up liking this collection. I'm curious to hear how you enjoy it!

My picks for this topic:
The Liars' Club by Mary Karr Catch-22 (Catch-22, #1) by Joseph Heller Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

I selected these books because a) I've already read a lot of the books on the list, b) I already had other selections from the list in other categories, and c) I didn't really want to read the last few that were left. These seemed to be the best choices. I've finished all 3 and really enjoyed them. The list did not let me down.

Evelyn, I just read I..."

Tammy,
Short stories can be a hit or miss, but I like most of the stories except The Treatment of Bibi Haldar.

message 37: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I read Me Talk Pretty One Day for this and it sucked. One of my rare one stars. I don’t think it counts if I quit half-way through, does it?

I already read 48, so a few left I still want to read. I might go with Oscar Wao also.

Oh, I actually read this, too. I quit that one around 90%, maybe this counts? Another one star... not lucky with this list so far.

message 39: by Charity (new)

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 552 comments - What are you reading for this category? A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
- Why did you choose this book? I wanted to read the book before I saw the movie.

message 40: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments I just finished 'Trainspotting' by Irvine Welsh for this prompt (UK list). It was great! And very disturbing. And very Scottish.

message 41: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments - What are you reading for this category? Catch-22

- Why did you choose this book? I'm reading it because it is one of 2 books being discussed the first week (May 24) after the premiere on May 22 of PBS's The Great American Book Read on The Great American Read Book Club FB page. (The other book is The Count of Monte Cristo, which I hope to read next.)

message 42: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 119 comments - What are you reading for this category?

Things Fall Apart

- Why did you choose this book?

I'm also doing the read harder challenge and this worked for book of colonial/post colonial fiction, and was on the list.

GailW (abbygg) | 657 comments - What are you reading for this category?
I read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
- Why did you choose this book?
I have never read this and have been wanting to do so. I found it on the list and decided it was time.

message 44: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments What are you reading for this category?
I read The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr

Why did you choose this book?
I bought it for a child so thought I would read it as it was on Amazons 100 list UK edition. I can't say I thought a lot of it but then I'm not a small child. I suppose the moral is don't ask a tiger to tea!

message 45: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I chose Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri for this category. I recently discovered the author, but I'd never read her collection of stories, which has garnered such great reviews.

message 46: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 456 comments I read Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie for this prompt because I had heard great things about this author but had yet to read any of his work. This was a fantastic allegorical tale of postcolonial India that I thoroughly enjoyed.

message 47: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 96 comments I read The Giver because it's been on my TBR forever. Then I ordered the other books in the quadrilogy from the library because it was pretty good.

message 48: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments I had been planning to read Hemingway for this (because I've developed the sneaking suspicion that I have never read any of his books, which is weird hole in my reading), but I just realized that Angela's Ashes, which I'm currently listening to, is on this list. Voila! That's what I'll use for the category. Hemingway can wait!

message 49: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments I read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to my 18 month old grandson. I’m counting it for my Book2, which is my children’s + others challenge.

message 50: by Shannan (new)

Shannan | 36 comments To Kill a Mockingbird (To Kill a Mockingbird, #1) by Harper Lee
To Kill a Mockingbird
I don't know why I've never read this, but what a powerful story and so relevant to our current times. It's sad how little things have changed for whoever happens to be the "other" at the time.
