McKinley | 18 comments I'm looking for a book that involves the protagonist undergoing some kind of test/trial/initiation in order to take their place in society. Something kind of like the aptitude test in Divergent, except that it should be a larger point of the story. Or like the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter, but with more meaning to the society as a whole.
Bonus for trials that test physically, mentally, AND morally, because those are most interesting!
I'm open to pretty much any genre but Scifi and Fantasy call to me most. Adult books that deal with hard questions are best but YA is fine too.

Conal (conalo) There are quite a few of these type of stories out there. A few I have read recently:

The Name of the Wind
Blood Song
The Magicians
and one not so recent Ender's Game

Here is a listopia list

Hope this helps

M. Lee (leevee) | 78 comments The more obvious ones are the recent The Testing and Legend; there's also The Culling, which features some pretty horrifying tests.

On the younger end, there's Dragon Run, where they're given numbers through an unknown process (Pawn also seems to have that premise). The School for Good and Evil has plenty of tests and competitions, too.

Michele | 2488 comments +1 for Amy's suggestion of Genesis -- short, but with a great punch.

Another excellent one: This Star Shall Abide. A young man rebels against the caste system of his society with surprising results. This hits a triple-play for you, since it encompasses physical, mental and moral/ethical components.

Although they're not really tests, Ted Chiang's collection Stories of Your Life and Others explores physical, mental and moral/ethical issues in original and thought-provoking ways, so you might enjoy it.

In The Book of Skulls, four college friends follow a strange manuscript to the desert and are tested for...well, I won't give it away :)

Inferno is a modern retelling of Dante's Inferno; the main character has to descend through the various levels of Hell. Not perhaps a test in the Triwizard sense, more of an ordeal or trial-by-fire (heh heh); the various people he encounters make you think about various ethical complexities.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull is about being tested at each stage of life, so the main character can move on to the next one (or not).

House of Stairs concerns a group teenagers who are tested in all three ways, though not all of them realize it.

Hero from Otherwhere might be a bit young for you but it's a fun/quick read about two boys who have to solve several tests together.

Storm Over Warlock and it's companion book Ordeal In Otherwhere.

The Prince in Waiting is, I believe somewhat like what you are talking about. If not this particular one, try the next one Beyond the Burning Lands The Sword of the Spirits It's been a really LLOONNGGGGG time since I read this trilogy, but I think it's what you are looking for.
