4.5 stars! I have this home from the library so didn't read ..."
I hope you like it too! It's such a unique book and simultaneously reminded me of books I've read before and nothing I've read before.
Finished
. The writing, awesome. The content, well, it left me uncomfortable for parts of it.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished Winter by Ali Smith, the second book in her seasonal quartet. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished New Boy a few dats ago. There are many reasons for liking a book. I enjoyed this one because it's part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series and I'm interested in how the series reflect the original plays. I'll be reading Othello soon, which is the play this book is fashioned against.
That said, this story has a number of flaws, I found, and I don't know that I recommend it unless one is interested in the series.

I was surprised to find that Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is not his usual reassuring self in Louise Penny's sixth in the series, Bury Your Dead. History, mystery, and haunting flashbacks in Old Quebec make for a good read.

Just finished listening to The Boleyn Inheritance (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, #10) by Philippa Gregory, a decent book but not her best.
Read a couple of non fiction for a change - Dunkirk: The History Behind the Major Motion Picture by Joshua Levine - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2913467762
and
People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil by M. Scott Peck - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2917670343.
"Cherry" Ingram was a somewhat eccentric Englishman who became one of the world's experts on flowering cherry blossom trees. I gave 'Cherry' Ingram: The Englishman Who Saved Japan’s Blossoms by Naoko Abe 3.5 stars rounded up to 4, mainly because I thought it had a great overview of Japanese culture and history. Here’s my review
Read book 7 of the Indigo series by Louise Cooper - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2784951361.
Finished
The Iron King by Maurice Druon. This is the first book in "The Accursed Kings" series which inspired George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones. An enjoyable read. 3.7 stars. My review:

Done reading A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine HansberryMy review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished Minutes of Glory by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. A compelling collection of short stories addressing the topics of colonialism, classism, and corruption in Kenya. Woven throughout are threads of magic, superstition, and folklore. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My review of Messy, Wonderful Us by Catherine Isaac
3 and a half stars

I just enjoyed a re-read of an old favourite, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. It's been adapted as a play and a film more than once, and it's as powerful now as ever. People haven't changed.

Another re-read was John Steinbeck's wonderful, funny, poignant Cannery Row. There were some real characters in Monterey, California in the 1930s!

David Vann’s Caribou Island, Alaska is not the stuff of glossy tourist brochures.

Am just starting
The Perfect Wife byJ.P. Delaney after finishing the diabolically brilliant
Never Have I Ever byJoshilyn Jackson which is my new benchmark for judging other books. You can find my spoiler free review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and on my webpage https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...
My review of The Shakespeare Requirement by Julie Schumacher. I liked the poignancy. 4 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Colson Whitehead’s new historical fiction is only barely fiction, and it is infuriating! Even the worst of The Nickel Boys deserved better than the slavery that passed for a reform school.
4.5★ Link to my review of The Nickel Boys
My review of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
a 5 star gem

I finished The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani. It focuses on the fate of a young girl passionate about making rugs. The setting is 17th century Persia. The details bring the sights and sounds and smells of the city to life. The description of rug-making was fascinating. And in true Middle Eastern fashion, there are folk tales within the tale. It reminded me of some of the writing of Elif Shafak. I think if you enjoy her writing, you will probably enjoy this.

Now I get what all the fuss was about! Just read Gillian Flynn's bestselling Gone Girl. Twisty story with twisted people. Not perfect, but very entertaining.
