Petra | 3324 comments I just finished listening to Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. It's so unique. Loved it.

dely | 5214 comments Yesterday I have finished City of Thieves by David Benioff 3*

It is a very enthralling read, a real pageturner, and I couldn't put it down, but at the end I thought there were too many clichés and several things were not credible.

Only Italian review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

And with this book I completed my challenge to read 40 books in 2017!

Chrissie dely, well I am glad you at least enjoyed it, if not the end.

Congratulations on your challenge.

It's not only the end. Above all towards the end I started thinking about the happenings and the "adventures" of these two friends and thought that many things were too weird to be credible. It could be a good screenplay for a perfect blockbuster because there is everything the audience is looking for.

Chrissie Muriel Spark's books are always fun and they give you something to think about. Finished The Girls of Slender Means.

What you say about it not being credible, makes me feel I ought to reread it. I usually need credible stories.

In fact at the end I was stunned about your 5* rating. I bought it also because I had seen your rating and usually we have similar tastes, but then I have seen that you read it 8 years ago.

I could read paper books that then. I remember getting it from bookDepository and they said if I didn't like it I could return it and get another book, but I DID love it. I seriously do not think I have changed that much in 8 years. The book did work for me then.

I know what you mean. I liked it and I was fully in the story till the last 100 pages or so. Of course I was curious to know what would happen, but at some point I had enough that everything was going on like in a perfect blockbuster: (view spoiler).

Thanks Bette!

What can I say; you complaints sound reasonable?!

Isn't it strange how sometimes you just react differently to a book than you would normally. That seems the case here, for me. Sometimes you get caught up in a book and you do not think straight! I do admire authors that can pull that off.

You explained it perfectly. The author has been really great to involve the reader and to sympathize and like the characters, that the reader doesn't note small details (those I listed in my spoiler above). If fact I rated it with 3* that means that I liked it, but if I hadn't been put down towards the end, it would have been a 4 stars by sure.

Finished yesterday, in a rainy day Endgame. Didn't like it that much; bit boring ...

I finished La Belle Sauvageyesterday which I really enjoyed. Here is my 4* review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This morning I finished the audiobook of The Palace of Curiosities which I found bizarre and really quite disappointing. I would have liked to have given it 1.5*: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments I have just DNFed one horse book The Sport of Kings and have now started A Horse Walks into a Bar. It is short so I will probably finish it but it is not a pleasant read. I don't hate it but I don't really like it either and if it doesn't change pace soon I am going to get bored.

Despite the fact A Horse Walks into a Bar is a very short book I put this down about half way through and haven't picked it up again. I would like to try finish it but I definitely don't love it

message 186: by Pink (new)

Pink Esther and Heather, I almost quit halfway through A horse walks into a bar, as I found it annoying and wasn't getting on at all. However I persevered because it was short and it kind of won me over by the end.
