Diane, you were wondering what I would think of Breath, Eyes, Memory--look at message 2016.
Huh, so you gave Anne Tyler's latest book 3,5 stars........ Remember how the previous one was to be the last?!
Seventy years old next year. Scary how well George Orwell forecast in 1949 what might occur in 1984, some of which we deal with in 2018. Can't find any reference to Fake News, but the whole premise is based on continually rewriting history. This was a re-read for me, so I re-reviewed it.

Stunning and wintry. The Snow Child was a debut by Eowyn Ivey and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. No wonder!

Bummer Chrissie, I have liked some of Danticut so but not all. Will skip this one, thanks.
I do remember it was supposed to be Tyler's last. Guess she wasn't quite ready to stop or she needed more money. Decent book though, not terribly exciting but then again everything doesn't have to be.

I thought I was going to listen to Meditations for a couple of days. I failed to realize I was almost at its end. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I just finished July's People by Nadine Gordimer. It is about South Africa in the 1980s as apartheid begins to crumble. In order to survive, a white family has to escape to the village of their servant of 15 years. Gordimer explores the shift in the balance of power between the Smales family, and their servant, July. It is a short book, but it packs a heavy punch.(Thanks to Raul for bringing it to my attention.)

Finished a couple of excellent books at the end of the month:

Tamara wrote: "I just finished July's People by Nadine Gordimer. It is about South Africa in the 1980s as apartheid begins to crumble. I liked the book so that is why I gave it three. The writing, the language, I found rather ordinary. Still, definitely a book worth reading for its subject matter.
The Ballad of Huck and Miguel is a brave updating by Tim DeRoche of Mark Twain's American classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Easy reading, powerful linocut illustrations.

Currently reading
A Steep Price by Robert Dugoni after finishing a lovely read
When Archie Met Rosie: An Unexpected Love Story by Lynda Renham. If you are no romance fan, don't let that put you off. This is an amusing slice of life of a sixty something woman who has a turn of fortune that just may not be as wonderful as she first thought. My spoiler free review can be found at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Compelling true-crime. If it weren't so well-documented, it would be hard to believe.Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann reads like a novel with an outrageous plot that will outrage YOU!

A second look with the benefit of hindsight. Talented Aussie author Aoife Clifford has written her second book Second Sight. Lots of seconds there, but it's a first-rate read!
4.5★ Link to my review
Finished Slave Old Man by Patrick Chamoiseau. It's an unusual book about a slave escaping from a plantation in Martinique. He is chased into the rain forest by his master and a vicious dog. The rain forest assumes mythic proportions with strange happenings and hallucinations. The novel is more akin to lyric poetry than a straightforward narrative. I thought it was very well done and gave it 4 stars.

This is a great book for anyone interested in the mystical, 15th century history, and quest stories. There was a little about Russia, but not as much as I expected. It is really different!
Four stars. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
