Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout. I enjoyed it. But I'd heard so much about it that I think I was expecting it to be a little stronger. It ended with a lot of unanswered questions probably because it's the first in a series.

PattyMacDotComma Aussie author Peggy Frew is noted for her wonderful writing. The Wildflowers here are three sisters, each wild in her own way, and the writing is as beautiful as ever, but...

PattyMacDotComma Preparing to read Rachel Joyce's lastest book, I thought I'd better see if The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was as good as I remembered. I'm delighted to say I still loved it! I updated my review a bit.

PattyMacDotComma I enjoyed Rachel Joyce's The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry a second time and wanted to know why Queenie fled from him so abruptly. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy shows what a secret and surprising connection she had with his family.
The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy (Harold Fry, #2) by Rachel Joyce 4★ My review of . . . Queenie Hennessey

PattyMacDotComma Cathal thought he was all set, but I reckon he should have known better. Irish author Claire Keegan's short story, So Late in the Day is another good one from her.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Butcher's Crossing by John Williams.
This is the second book I've read by John Williams. His Stoner is one of my favorite books. I think this is just as good. Williams was such a gifted writer with a knack for getting to the heart of things in direct, clear-eyed prose.

PattyMacDotComma I enjoyed the latest (last?) pilgrimage that Rachel Joyce's characters have made to the north of England. This time, it's the missus who looks for answers in Maureen Fry and the Angel of the North. Another good road trip.

PattyMacDotComma I'm sure The Sisters: Short Story, from James Joyce's much studied Dubliners, would have stirred up as much controversy then as the subject does today.

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Just finished reading/ listening to Sharpe's Tiger … only about 20 years later than most of the historical fiction bibliofans. Definitely going to look out for more of the series… might even get round to watching Sharpe!!! Ah blessed retirement …

Coincidentally also picked up a copy of The Man Who Broke Napoleon's Codes : The Story of George Scovell by Mark Urban. I began reading this before acquiring Sharpe’s tiger … so my woeful knowledge of this period of history is increasing gradually and by roundabout routes and was inspired initially by reading Jane Austen at Home by Lucy Worsley recently. LW points out helpfully to history ignoramouses like me that Jane Austen came of age as the French Revolution kicked off and was highly aware of the next 15 years of war thanks to two of her brothers being in the navy.
