What have you just read? Opinions, recommendations, reviews Part 2

I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea, and I don't think T.J. Klune has anything to apologise for. He has shared a happy fantasy tale about acceptance and inclusiveness that has moved a lot of people who may - just maybe - learn to care about all kids, not just those who are easy to care about. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also have appreciated it quite; more for the theme than for the story - I don't particularly like YA or Fantasy. Anyway I find his treating these kind of themes nice and important

That's fair. Systemic abuse of institutionalized orphaned children is a problem in basically all corners of the world. I do think that it maybe would've been better had the author not chosen this particular incident, but the fact that he addressed the issue without any erasure, while also managing to make it a comfortable read, deserves praise.
Also, great review Patty :)

Just finished Circle of Shadows, not a great ending. I think I got bored and was ready to finish the novel.

Alannah, some people dismiss it because they think it is too dated. I loved it. It was light, entertaining, and just what I needed as a brief escape from these troubling times.

A wonderful collection of poems. My review:

Finished reading
She Would Be King by Wayétu Moore.
Excellent debut novel, in my opinion, which uses magical realism in a fictional telling of the history of Liberia's founding.

A compelling narrative unfolding in three related threads that tell of the abuse and oppression of the indigenous population of Australia. It won the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award. I thought it was very well done.
