PattyMacDotComma I just enjoyed Kopp Sisters on the March by Amy Stewart, number five in the series. It's April 1917, just before America enters WW1, and the sisters are off to army camp with another colourful character.

PattyMacDotComma I'm sadly nearing the end of Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. Number 15 is A Better Man. Freezing spring floods threaten Three Pines and Montreal.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Lately, it feels as if I've been reading a series of books about life under totalitarian governments- Iraq, Libya, and Romania. All good books, but all pretty depressing.

I just finished The Fox Was Ever the Hunter by Herta Müller; translated from the German by Philip Boehm. Through a series of staccato images propelled by an intermittent narrative, Müller creates the unmitigated terror of life in Rumania just before the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu. A challenging read but worth the effort.

I was planning to read The Remainder next--a book about Chile. But I think I'll delay that for now and read something a little lighter.

PattyMacDotComma The title story of These Precious Days: Essays, by Ann Patchett is a novella-length essay about her amazing and unexpected friendship with an artist who is a personal assistant to Tom Hanks.

The book itself is due out in November - here's a link to the story, free online.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Jane Austen: Her Life by Park Honan, a 400+ page biography.
Prof. Honan includes a wealth of information about Jane Austen's life and her times. But sometimes he goes into a lot of details that have little or no relevance to Jane Austen or her work. In spite of extensive digressions about various sea battles with France or genealogies of minor characters, this is a well-researched and informative biography.
