This is fabulous. Ever since I read my dad's memoir, I don't trust them at all. But this give me more respect for it.

PattyMacDotComma Hello Friend We Missed You won The Guardian's 2020 Not the Booker Prize competition. I liked the real Booker winner better this year - Shuggie Bain - but Richard Owain Roberts IS a good writer, and it's nice to see Wales represented.

PattyMacDotComma Six Word Story: Stories, Memoirs, Poems and Jokes all written in only six words. is the second book of clever, quirky "stories" by Doug Weller. There's a competition you can enter, too. Fun to try making them up.

Can I ask why our Dad wrote a memoir and how it betrayed your trust?

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Finished Absent: A Novel by Betool Khedairi, translated from Arabic by Muhayman Jamil.
I think there were some issues with it, but, on the whole, it presented a compelling portrait of Iraqi civilians living under horrific circumstances of economic sanctions and constant bombings during the 1990s.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Memento Mori by Muriel Spark.
A group of elderly people receive anonymous phone calls reminding them they're going to die. The novel wasn't at all bleak or morbid. It was humorous, with authentic characters, and wonderful dialogue.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Supernavigators: Exploring the Wonders of How Animals Find Their Way by David Barrie. It is full of fascinating insights on the navigational tools of animals, with particular focus on insects and birds.
