PattyMacDotComma I've just finished Amy Stewart's delightful Miss Kopp Just Won't Quit, the third in this wonderful historical fiction mystery series, based on a real lady cop. New Jersey in 1916. I'm sure glad she won't quit!

Doing a little happy dance that the one you loved was the Ursula K. Le Guin :) I find her works so thought-provoking.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished the latest Gamache mystery, All the Devils Are Here, in one great gulp Sunday. An excellent mystery - my main reason not to give it 5* is that I missed all the secondary characters from Three Pines.

I did 'confirm' my 5* rating for W. Somerset Maugham's Cakes and Ale by rereading it (I last read it in 2013). I love all the commentary about the role of critics and PR in making an author a success. Plus, Maugham's prose is always a delight to read.

PattyMacDotComma Richard Russo's characters always seem like people I'd recognise. In Chances Are, three guys and the girl they all (secretly?) adored were in college together during the draft for Vietnam. The guys are now 66, having a reunion, but where's Jacy?

PattyMacDotComma Lucky's by Aussie author Andrew Pippos may have struck me on a bad day. Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention - I got confused.

PattyMacDotComma Jane Harper's Tasmanian coast in The Survivors is just as compelling as her outback in The Dry and The Lost Man. Evelyn Bay is such a small town that it's almost a locked room mystery. Loved it!

Yes! I completely agree about Le Guin, Leslie--thanks. And I am happy to hear your re-read of Cakes and Ale was good. I enjoyed that too, and am thinking it's been way too long since I read W. Somerset Maugham.

PattyMacDotComma I have just finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley and adore his 11-year-old experimental poisoner/investigator, Flavia de Luce. This is the first of what seems to be a terrific mystery series - can't wait to find the rest!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The Possessed: Adventures With Russian Books and the People Who Read Them by Elif Batuman.
I was excited to read it because I thought it would explore Russian authors, Russian books and people who read them. Instead, it was more about Elif Batuman's experiences with grad school and travel. A bit disappointing.
