In fact I bought it because you talked so well about it. It is really worth to be read despite those repetitions.

PattyMacDotComma I do enjoy Aussie author Emma Viskic's stubborn, deaf detective. And Fire Came Down is #2 in the Caleb Zelic mystery series.

Pam Baddeley | 1529 comments Re-read Charmed Life by the late great Diana Wynne Jones after many years and didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped, as the whole thing depends on a failure to communicate which, on the part of the adults at least, seems inexcusable. I looked for it right now. It's interesting! I hope it will be broadcasted in the small theater I usually go.

Angela M I read The Tree House. 4 stars. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Having a problem with Goodreads and cannot add the book link. I'll try to fix it later.

Paul Lockman | 72 comments I just got through The Trauma Cleaner: One Woman's Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster by Sarah Krasnostein - not raving about it as much as most people, 3 stars from me. My brief review

message 462: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I just finished The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler & wow, was it great! I thought that this would be a reread for me, but after the first few pages, I realized that I had never read this before. Chandler kept surprizing me right up to the end & while there was some violence, it wasn't really graphic.

Sorry, no. But how did you get it? I saw a banner but was busy at the time and didn't click on it & it has now vanished...

dely | 5214 comments I have finished a very short religious book with no English edition: L'umanità della fede: Fede che umanizza, fede da umanizzare.
It talks about how faith should "humanize" the human being, but also that faith shouldn't be lived in a rigid way, but it should help to open to other people and emphatize with them.

Eleven Pipers was my favorite of the 3, probably because of the bagpipes, Burns Night, haggis, and all that. The first book required a second reading for me, with a notepad where I started keeping a detailed list of all the characters and the backstory of Father Christmas. But maybe all that paid off, because I felt so invested in it by then. I loved his quirky daughter, and his secretary, of course, with her notes to her Mum all the time.

There are a lot of characters. :D
I like Madrun, too. Her letters to her Mum are hilarious. I didn't put much thought into the daughter, I have to admit. I found her love of French a little strange for a child that age but that's a great skill to have so early in life.

Finished yestarday A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny and loved it as much as almost all the others. I find astonishing that a writer of mystery - a genre that I love but that I don't consider what is definied as "high literature" - can write such deep books, in such a light manner.
Here what i think:

Paul Lockman | 72 comments I just finished A Long Way From Home by acclaimed Aussie author Peter Carey. He's someone whose writing I do have trouble getting into but I gave it 3 stars as he tackles Indigenous culture and the white man's rewriting of Australian history for the first time in his career. Thanks, Heather. I particularly marvel at her ability to switch between different jargons, play with words and ........I like the strength of character Daniel imbibed in Elisabeth. I like how one character molds another.
