Rachel | 531 comments Let's see, since my last post I finished Six Wakes (fun! easy read with some interesting points to make about cloning)
Shards of Honor for the group read: also pretty fun (I guess my idea of fun is uh...wide) And I'm looking forward to knocking more Hugo winners off my list from this series.
The Dispatcher - short story by Scalzi exploring an interesting idea
Now working on The Refrigerator monologues by Valente. Its brilliant and hard hitting and I'll never be able to look at any of the ongoing superhero stories I love the same way again.
Also have finally started working my slow slow way through The Way of Kings!

Allison Hurd In October I read:

Arcadia - fascinating and lovely, but dense.
Tuesdays with Morrie - not SFF and not actually a happy book, did you know that? I didn't.
Pushing Ice - DNFed this one. I was all angered within the first hundred pages and didn't want to subject myself to more rage.
The Last Wish - fun, but not more fun than just playing the game.
The Bear and the Nightingale - pretty, atmospheric, and yet I wanted it to have more substance.
Equal Rites - hilarious, glad I started Discworld here!
Metamorphoses - one of my all time favorites. I had the Brooks More translation for this read through, and I really enjoyed it. He had some perfect turns of phrase.
Shards of Honor - erm. Well. I have lots to talk about when we read it!

and hope to finish The Girl with All the Gifts by the end of tomorrow. Really enjoying this one as well. About as ooky as I can handle and all these glorious verbal vignettes all over the place that keep taking my breath away.

Also reading The Way of Kings again to prepare myself for Oathbringer, and let me say, if spren were real, you wouldn't be able to see me because I'd be absolutely drenched in anticipationspren.

I'm curious, what angered you? Been awhile since I read it, but I thought it at least "OK" for a space opera.

I liked that, too. The movie adaptation seems to have come & gone without much notice.

I'm re-reading that now myself. Will discuss Wednesday :)

I was angry that the author kept paying lip service to gender equality type stuff and then at every turn turned the women into irrational, love-seeking sex kittens. I imagine somewhere in the universe there's a woman that, upon learning she (view spoiler), but she's not anyone like anyone I've ever met, then, for example. I'm all for complex, perhaps even unlikable characters of all genders, but this felt really unnatural to me. I didn't buy it, and I hated them all before the conflict really started, so I knew it wasn't going to work out for us.

I was just told that the movie (which you're right! I hadn't realized it had been released) was one of the best zombie movies in recent history, and "up there with Train to Busan" so that's pretty exciting. I think I have my Friday movie all picked out :)

Can't wait for the Shards talk!!

NekroRider | 504 comments Last day of October and just finished the Detective Erlendur mystery, Into Oblivion (my version is actually just called Oblivion), I was reading. Have read a boat load of books this month it seems. Anyways, beginning my last book of the month today, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The last of my Halloween reads. May very well finish it tonight in time for All Hallows' Eve :P Next year I'll have to prepare a bit better for my Halloween reads, didn't read as many of the books that I wanted to, but at least got to a couple classics.

Ah yeah, that makes sense. Liked the sinister feel of the book myself but when it comes to Shirley Jackson will always love Haunting of Hill House best. Just such a perfect book imo.

I'm at 254/451 pages of my last Halloween read...I might just be able to finish it today as it's an easy read, after all I did 200 yesterday (though it's nearly 3pm here, I'd better get reading!). After all, need to squeeze in a halloween movie tonight too.

*edit* Due to the book having a big boring chunk in it, I didn't succeed in finishing it that day, ended up having to carry over 50 pages or so :)

Richard I just finished T C Rypel's Fortress of Lost Worlds. It has been awhile since I've enjoyed a fantasy book this much!

Next up is Songs of the Dying Earth: Stories in Honour of Jack Vance.

NekroRider | 504 comments The books I ended up finishing for October were:

The Time of Contempt - Witcher series, my least favourite of the series so far, 3/5
The Uninvited - Halloween read, gothic ghost story, really great, definitely recommend 4/5
Baptism of Fire - Witcher series, one of my favourite in the series 4/5
The Hound of the Baskervilles - Halloween classic read, 3/5
Mapping the Interior - Halloween read, a horror novella about a Blackfeet boy in the US whose family is being haunted by the ghost of his father. Really intense book. Definitely recomend it. 4/5
Horrorstör - Halloween read, really fun horror comedy about a haunted Ikea knock-off store. Not as scary as a I wanted it to be, but still highly recommend if you like horror comedy. 4/5
Into Oblivion - Detective Erlendur series. Never disappoints. 4/5
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Halloween classic read, unfortunately disappointing. 2/5
