Sorry this is so late, but I'm just checking back in with my final thoughts (view spoiler)[ I had forgotten just how immersive this read is. I adored the different backgrounds it explored as well as the running social commentary on wealth and race. I found the teens the most fascinating characters and how it was the perceived 'good' characters breaking the rules yet the black sheep of the family was blamed for everything. I wish we saw her reconnect with Pearl and her mother as I can see her thriving with them.

The custody battle was also interesting to explore and I could see both sides of the case. My heart went out to poor Bebe and I longed for her to be reunited with her baby, but then I wondered how both would survive with so little money. Pearl grew up relatively poor and I hope the little baby will become as great as she seems to be. (hide spoiler)]

Do you think that Celeste Ng’s writing style is a bit like J.K. Rowling’s? Like the way she introduces things? Like she's telling you what is going to happen but not exactly? Only in some places.

Yea, that was a bit of a controversial part of the book for me (view spoiler)[ I get that in the situation an abortion seemed like the best out, but I feel she sould have at least consulted some adult before making such a decision. Not because abortions are bad or anything, just because there are so many effects, mentally and physically on a person when they prepare for being a mother, and than to give that up, when she really didn't want to might have a lasting effect on her. I agree, Brian might have freaked out, but I feel like he should handled that better. He could have been sensitive enough to thoughts she might have been feeling, and thus I guess It's a good thing they broke up? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ wow. Wow. Wow. 5 stars for me, I loved that nothing was expected in this book, especially the ending which was simultaneously an ending, but it let you use your imagination as well. This book depicts some characters as "crazy" (Izzy, and Bebe a bit) but also shows us why they did all these things and it kinda makes sense? And they depict some characters (like, all the Richardsons) as bad but also shows us why they do everything. Also gives you a lot to think about. I didn't like though that Mia and Pearl dissapeared without a trace, the Richardson kids i am sure would love to have some contact with Pearl. All in all, it was amazing. Can't wait to read more from this author (hide spoiler)]
