Zaara's Buddy Read Tracker

Nice one Iain :)

Right. I mostly read historical romance, but I can give you a few co temporary Recs to get started with. Please don't let the summaries fool you. Romance Novels have really shitty summaries, but tend to hold a lot more substance than they would suggest.
Bet Me
Hold Me (transf/m)
Ain't She Sweet
Strong Female Characters;
First Test. Kel is amazing. She is good with a glaive, but there secondary to how stubborn she is I could sing her praises for a year.
Paladin of Souls. Ista is a bitter middle aged widowed grandmother with an unsavoury past. Really, all the Bujold books qualify.
Secondary characters being strong tends to be very subjective. So I'm not even going to go there.
Urban Fantasy/PNR
Discount Armageddon (slightly more PNR than UF)
Indexing Fairytale X Files. UF more than PNR.
Bayou Moon PNR.
The Demon's Lexicon
Non Urban Fantasy
Bryony and Roses, The Seventh Bride. Both Fairytale retellings (of Beauty and the Beast and Bluebeard respectively). Former has a romance element latter is aggresively non romance.
Six of Crows. Heist story.
Caveat: Tastes differ, and I've tried to include the books I think most people tend to like rather than my more obscure picks. Apologies for any misaimed Recs.

*big googly eyes*
I can be such a doof, I swear.
Read...rinse...repeat for most of them tho'
I prolly wouldn't hv read as much in the genre as you...but we should totally have a loooong girlytalk abt romance when I'm bk...mebbe @Choko and @Sri will come too.
Have read one CoHo. Unfortunately that one was Ugly Love where the male lead repeats himself pointlessly. In italics. But God, how that gal can write! So Bet Me is deffo on the cards. Chalion too is on my TBR although I've missed the boat :-( to read with Mayim et al...what you say makes me wanna expedite it tho'...
How didyou know I love Beauty and the Beast? You Sha(h)ful of Wonder you... already own (but haven't read) Bryony and Roses + also read the Six of Crows duology. Loved it to bits.
Sorry Sha. I never get arnd to marking half my read books as uhhh "read".
But the part of your list I really needed+ will use the most was the UF/PNR section bcuz in that world I'm totally lost + clueless. Complete noob.
Btw there's no need for caveats and such. I'm pretty nonfuss + nonjudgemental abt recos from frends. I figure ppl would only reco a book if they really loved it...so who am I to then go and crush their hearts with a big ole sneer and curled lip? Look how @Ahdam and *snort* Petrik sucked me into reading Faithful and the Fallen when I was young and new and innocent...
Then they cunningly vanished leaving me stuck in the bogs. I'm really struggling with it but not a word of complaint to those two, see? Mild as milk am I.
Meanwhile those boys are alive and kickin' and thrivin' on their super success + prolly waiting to ambush the next innocent visitor to the welcome thred.
;-)
Knowing me, I will prolly even go and finish the damn F&tF series in a grand gesture of self-sacrifice for #TeamRaiders. Then on my gravestone it will say "Ahdam and Petrik did this. Via John Gwynne."
Besides gal, I seem to like you more & more everytime we talk. You introduced me to wild, incoherent flailing :-) what a lifesaver + you love Kaz Brekker + heist stories generally + fairytale retellings + historomance + you ALSO love Bujold. You didn't swoon over Malice + came here jezzt to gimme UF and PNR recos + the hugeness of Cosmere puts you in a reading slump = you are my booktwinsoulmate...you!
There will be no disclaimers between us 😜 nevAAAAAARRR!

I mean, my tastes tend to go more towards banter and fluff (or alternatively, incest/murder/rape/etc) than kilts but STILL.
Zaara wrote: "Read...rinse...repeat for most of them tho'"
But this is true. a lot of HRs are just mildly modified copies of each other, which is why I sit up and take notice when one of them does something unusual. Also, I am always up for talking about HR but I will spent most of my time complaining because I like complaining and because I do it with all the genres.
I actually haven't read that much CR. I tend to find and author I like, read everything they have written and leave the genre till I randomly find another author I like. As opposed to HR where the genre alone was enough to make me read a LOT of random authors.
BRYONY AND ROSES IS SO GOOD. But I KNOW there are Beauty and the Beastish HRs by the dozen... ummm... The Duchess Deal for one was hilarious.
Zaara wrote: "I figure ppl would only reco a book if they really loved it...so who am I to then go and crush their hearts with a big ole sneer and curled lip?'"
You are a much nicer person than i am. i have been known to wave books at people with a betrayed expression on my face while yelling "HOW COULD YOU I TRUSTED YOU" at them... but admittedly I've mellowed out a lot more recently...
Sorry about abandoning you in the bogs of tfatf. I just had to climb out and go NOPE before I started crying from frustration.
YESSSS ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE GOOD (except malice. i really feel like the book was titled well though i feel a lot of malice whenever i think of it i am not sure why it's irrational at this point) and i have HR recs~
1. Anything by Courtney Milan. Anything. So much family stuff and so much exploration of gender issues and stuff I am a sucker who has been sucked in.
2. Fluffy and feel-good books!
The Duke's Holiday
Virtuous Scoundrel
Mr. Cavendish, I Presume
Just Like Heaven
The Perfect Rake
....
and so on and so forth because this list is too long for my fingers far too long.

Oh Sha!
Thanks for the HR recos. You deffo deserve a better reply but my brain feels like it's been banged repeatedly against the inside of my skull...I dunno wtf is happening arnd here anymore...and who ANYONE is...
:-(

Oh Sha!
Thanks for the HR recos. You deffo deserve a better reply but my brain feels like it's been banged repeatedly against the inside of my skull...I dunno..."
usually they don't happen between the leads but happen to the leads and the leads have to get over them. but there are rape romances- i think there's a whole genre of that? the boundaries are sketchy, although not as much as the concept. Incest tends to be almost exclusively a villain thing, and incest romance tends to be not-exactly romance.

....indicating that I have read this but I really have to go now...
Also too many threads are suddenly pinging all at once...wow!
Everyone here talks A LOT...no?

List sorted by date + if a shared bday, list is sorted alphabetically.

*non-FBR
Everyone I've left/missed out/haven't spoken much to yet...sorry...puh-leeeze forgive me. I will fix it at once...if you will help 😉
@all ...if youz see this + are not docketed yet and wouldn't mind being added to the Great FBR Bday MotherList...pls take pity on ZaaDoof and leave a comment with your bday...pls you hunnyluvduckstoots you! When fully completed + edited, I will hand it over to someone 'Mod'ular to play with if they want...for future contests/team games + fun stuff, if any.
handy to habe + saves 'em the compilation time, no?
NB: There will be no gifts. But there WILL be a lot o' luuuuuuuurve + a big ole-fashioned snugglebumpus cashmere of a fuss made over yooooouz by all the friendly buddy readers here...

Reply of HR for Zaara;
they never make the trio from RAM to ROM unless they're exceptional
SAME! I enjoy romances, because it's a character centric genre, but I only remember the ones I like which is barely 5 percent of what I read.
From what you've said, I think there are two books you might like;
The Perfect Rake
The Duchess Deal
I have reviews for both here;
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
And they both have lot of hilarious conversations between the leads so you may like it. There is also no love at first sight but WTF at first sight.
But yeah, if you have read them and forgotten them everything may be falling flat. Heh.
I haven't read that book of Eloisa James, mostly because my romance novel reading is FAR from structured or logical. I have to admit I have a HUGE soft spot for heroes who are prettier than the heroines. The fact that those types also tend to be sarcastic little shits is a plus. I do love my sarcastic little shits.
And also touching on this thing...with children and babies in romance books. Do you like them?
Ehhh... depends. Sometimes I am in the mood for an unrealistically parent-trapping character with all the finesse of an anvil, other times I'm not. Frankly, I think that any baby-is-home story without sleepless nights and almost-breakdowns is stretching reality way too much. Also a missed opportunity, because sickeningly sweet kids making people bond is fine but think of how much more people would bond if they were stuck taking care of a screaming little dictator.
I'm not much of a baby person. :D
Sorry for the crappy reply.....Sha daaaaaaaarlin'...
:3 not crappy at all.
And when you can manage to tear yourself away from Jean Tannen
NEVER.
I love these characters they have captured my heart this si the second set of hardcore criminals I have been charmed by this year I think I may have a problem. T_T
I'd like your opinion on Nora Roberts...
I think I read one Nora Roberts about a decade and a half ago. All I can tell you for sure is that she is an author and she writes romance novels.

Now I'm jezzt *repeating the sounding joy* like a good munky.
Today we prettied up the place generally and went out distributing the Xmas charity baskets...in a horse-drawn no less. Interesting thing...do you know that today's roads are STILL built to those old legacy specifications? See...in the olden days they made highways/roads as wide as two carriages. For them to pass alongside one another. Now the carriages were made to accommodate the
Oh btw the horses arses...niff to the skies...my daaaaaahlin'...I swear...I'm thinking the women in olden days covered up and veiled/hatted themselves so much for this and no other reason.
Uhhhhh...*yerk* see there's me starting to babble agn...unlocking the door to my random attic of nonsense knowledge...where were we, Nyssa?
Ah yes, teaching...its why I reacted so enjoyably to our little discussion last night and you're right...its heartbreaking about the reading + confidence.
I'm a hopeless teacher per se...too scatty and all about the capers and games...but we have so much fun + surprisingly their reading improves I dunno...fun is ALWAYS good, I guess. Then they bring their parents and families...the level of illiteracy in some pockets of the world is...jezzt....so in the evenings I throw together some sessions for adult EFL (English as a Foreign Language)...just as fun...half the time we're gesturing good-naturedly and its hilarious. It all turns into these long story-telling sessions and inside I'm soooo homesick arnd this time for my mates...I can't even tell you...its prolly why I made this list.
@Hailee...thank'ee daaaahlin'! Like I was tellin' Nyssa...I'm sooooo darn homesick now that I've been away almost a month + I'm bored...I'm done with the teachy stuff by 5.30-6 pm max and then I help a bit but after....
+ the shower here at my lovely and generous hosts has been inhabited by a twisted ghoul beastie with a really kroool sense of humour. Sooooo....it goes from scalding hot to ice cold in nanoseconds. So I'm always hopping on one foot and yowling at two vastly different pitches depending on whether I'm being broiled to a crisp or frozen blue...
I bet my hosts think I'm clinically insane (their son especially...he has this look in his eye like wtf) but they're just too awesome and luuurvely and generous to crib at + I'm at a charity, I can't crib when I'm volunteering, I just gotta suck it up...
But the next time the dude looks at me like that in a comfused and considering way Ima tell him I'm practising my Irish step-dancing #lordofthedance. Mwha! that'll comfuse him even more...hehehhehe...
Aaaaaanyway...for what it's worth....
(view spoiler)

Now see I'd normally jezzt attribute this here list to that
And something went bing in the twisted goblin corridors of my mind.
@800 just showed me how. Theys an EVIL
It all happened on Ron's tracker. Go see.
I'm jezzt the innocent pawn in all this ;-)
Not my idea at all...
Heh you liked it, no Siobhan daaaaahlin'?
So did I.
I love bdays and presents (Pbbbbbbbbbthhh *blows raspberry* in the general direction of @Andy)
No lass, as usual, I have a secret cunning + evil + self-serving purpose. See...I'm plotting this mega + epic FBR-wide reading challenge...
But frankly the team reading cuckpetition has mushroomed to such epic proportions + there are now soooooo many BRs planned for 2018 that if I start something now those Mod bébés will break down and cry, I swear.
Nobody wants that. So I'm leaving my plotting all modestly draped in a mystic cloud. For the nonce. It isn't even fully formed as an idea yet. I'm biding my time for those dull, boring months when everyone is in a slump, lull or irredeemably bored and this place needs a good buck 'n' wing dance.
Then we shall rip off its mask and unleash the full and final...
Btw I haven't decided if its going to be Treasure Hunt or RPG themed and seeing as how I'm stuck here with nothing to do tonight but *yerk* read some more Malice (hehehehehe I'm sooo procrastinating) I thought I'll get in some prep before I go and ambush/accost/otherwise confund Martin Apergis who is a key partner in crime and instigator...kidding...kidding...@Apergis has absolutely no idea about the evil plans I have for him and his fabulous sketching talent. And I have no idea if he will cooperate. Everything depends on Apergis.
He holds all the
😭😂😁
When I'm a bit further ahead I will prolly ping some of you for input...like Marge said...somewhere...prolly on grp suggestions...
@Sha...you just take the cake...and pie and here...you can also have this whole damn basket of beautiful Xmas preserves...
*nudges them at Sha*

or if you prefer....

:-)))) at "finesse of an anvil"...
I admire how you jezzt snap yo' fingers and words just jump thru hoops for you...Sha daaaaaaahlin'
But *wild incoherent flailing* is still my alltime fave. It rules my world.
Nothing can evaaaaarr compete...
Btw the other set of criminals you mention in passing...were they Brekker and crew? If not....do tell...

I blame the connection!
But here are my selections for yooooooo...
https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/v...
and the second one was

Taaaaaa Daaaaahlin'
Ima go find Andy now....

Now see I'd normally jezzt attribute this here list to that Big Ole Spirit of Christmas Planter of Evil Seeds but in this case I believe its @Veronica who'..."
I will take ALLL the preserves. I am not picky about food.:3
Yes, they were in fact Brekker and the crew. I reviewed them while incoherently flailing too. This is not normal, because I usually prefer heroic characters to assholes or grimdark characters, but OH MY GOD all of these criminals are so much fun and I CANNOT.

(view spoiler)
Anyway sorry for that depressing comment. But on a much lighter note I totally understand where you are coming from with the shower story (and it did make me smile😄). I have experienced my fair share of showers and I've long come to the conclusion that I own the ONLY easy to use shower in existance (and yes this is a fact not bias😉). It really boggles my mind that I feel like I need a PhD in Showering in order to get a shower where there is good water pressure and doesn't either give me first degree burns or give me pneumonia! My grandad has had his shower for close to a decade and to this day I live in dread of the stupid thing when I go to stay! 😂

Now I'm jezzt *repeating the sounding joy*..."
Aww! It's so awesome that you teach!
I love Christmas music too! I grew up listening to Mahalia Jackson, Johhny Mathis, and Bing Crosby,
Where is the charity school, and where is home - if you don't mind my asking?

The Perfect Rake
The Duchess Deal
I have reviews for both here;
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
And they both have lot of hilarious conversations between the leads so you may like it. There is also no love at first sight but WTF at first sight. "
Read both reviews. Added both to TBR.

@Nyssa....nuuuh uhhh noooo...I don't teach...not at all...imagine the chaos and horror I would soooo cause + the poor innocent children!
I'm jezzt helping out a bit for a few weeks....is all.
I'm terribly inept. At expressing myself clearly, among other things...in fact, I'm famous for it.
Ask anyone. In fact, @Ron and I were roflaffin' about it #thesh!tshow only the other day somewhere within this grp...jezzt before the lightning struck agn 😂😂😂😂
Sorry daaahlin'...clearly I should NOT be teaching English. But then what kinda boring ole wurld would this be if we all didn't do the things we weren't supposed to?
😝😜😝
Home? Oh I dunno....(view spoiler)
For the next week or so I'm in Asia. I just sign up with embassies/intl aid organizations...the various local agencies of the United Nations for example could always use some help. I jezzt go where/do what they tell me. Like a good munky. That whole thing with Irma/Harvey...god! The people...their homes...the devastation...
*incoherent flailing* and :-(
(view spoiler)
Enough, daaaahlin' enough. Oh do stop...you with all these scary questions! Dontcha know I'm a *yerk* bloody egotisitical megalomaniac? I'll talk abt myself forevaaaaar once you let me get started. Youz ears will wear out under my boring drone.
*psychotic drilling sounds* + *mad scientist's evil cackling*
Uwaaaahaaaaahaaaaaaa!
It's all @Ahdam's fault. Him and his fiendish school & puppet stories which I can't resist and then I go and open my big ole mouth and this essay babbling happens. Nice work, AHDAM! Look what you done to poor Nyssa's ears now...
😂😂😂😂
By the bye...howz you doing with GoT, Ahdam dear? Liking it? Loving the strong and sturdy heart of Ned Stark yet? Feeling empathy for his hearth and home? His 😘 little kids? His honesty, integrity and somewhat idealistic manhoodery? Nice....niiiiiiice...keep reading, you!
*more evil drilling sounds*
*winks at

I think I would find that really hard to cope with. I really don't enjoy e-books and can't concentrate with on audiobooks.

Oooop sorry Nyssa...just saw that you'd posted here. I'm sorry...were my stories a bit much/weird/diatribe-y?
See, here's the real problem with me. I've had rather a very secluded and chequered upbringing + spent a lotta time with ppl who were themselves unconventional/didn't know much how to raise a small girl. As a result I'm ended up a little wild #sasha and very manly #glokta and don't knowmthe correct ways of expressing myself or how to be polite + what to say to ppl xpecially.
This has gotten me into soooo much trouble everywhere, gal...its not even funny :-(
I swear everyday I'm wishing I was effortlessly elegant & graceful like Mayim or Marge or Romn or Sendai. But I'm usually that *idiot woman* tripping over my own words and landing in a sprawl of limbs to the sound of mingled derision and laughter. From everyone. If I didn't hv ppl like Siobhan and Dan and Beste and sometimes also Sarah and Lala and Manu + ALL the women, really + Lain + (now) you gently steering me arnd, I'd be in such sh!t all the time, I tell ya.
I'm sorry if my stories were weird or something. Its jezzt I was bored to bits + wishing for my friends. There really isn't nothing much to do here at night except stare at the moon, listen to the whispering of the coconut grove. Or read Malice 😂😂😂😂
But I've learned now that when I say somethin' + there's a deafening silence = it means I've socially funked up. So I immediately say sorry. I'm trained now, like a good doggo.
It's a Pavlovian response 😝

Iain was born on Christmas? For reals??

Your stories are not weird, or strange. You certainly are not an idiot, and you have nothing for which to apologize.
While we only "met" a couple of days ago, you seem like a very down to earth, fun, caring individual to me. I find it refreshing that you are so open.

@Nyssa...☺️ tks...glad to have been of "refreshment" 😝 you hunnyluvduckstoots (this is a silly name by which we all call each other...oh and its mentally said with a Cockney accent, yes Olivia?

😂😂😂 oh Ron! This is like Helen of Troy asking, "Whazz these ships all about?"
It all began on your tracker when you said you keep a birthday list in your planner...so you won't forget. So this list was actually your idea and I gave you full credit for it...a little ways up this thread...if you see. But I didnt know how to execute, bcuz as you say, it is a long list...until Ian commented that all the info would be on the Team Tourney Signup Thred. Then it was just the matter of half hour or so of me being stuck here with nothing to do of an evening xept read Malice.
Hehehehe no no...Helen gal *here be the birth of a new nickname*...the real Iain was born sometime in March nearabouts @Ab's bday. See...I've marked it n all. Speaking of which...that Ab bébé has just vanished. I on;y saw an update from that one saying he was starting mOathbriger and then....jezzt....nothing...
He has prolly been kidnapped and is being held hostage somewhere in Cosmere.
Now where was I before Oathbringer struck?
Oh yuss....Iain is all #idesofmarch which I'm chalking as a dirty trick of devious proportions, designed to lull us all into thinking the Dark Priest is relatively harmless...😁😝
However his self-christened fake feminine alterego Lain was deffo born on Xmas morning and shoulda been named Noel. Or in her case Noelle bcuz...haven't you noticed everywhere that wicked wicked lass goes...that place immediately fills up with a legion of adorning frends + happy feels + conversation bursting at the seams + peace and joy and love and light + the Spirit of Xmas, generally?
Hehehehe...sorry Veronica, I couldn't help throwing a few running gags into the list...I will remove them of course. If the damn thing is ever used for anything serious/team-y. I ist wanted to almost share with Lain bcuz of the whole Finbar-Sasha "freaky" psychic twins thingy. Xcuz whatzisface All the Names...is jezzt like me with all the hermitty contradictions + heck, s/he even punctuates like me...
#random my goodreads page is acting weird agn. You know how we get a dropdown box for notifications and we can just click on that? Now the damn thing doesn't drop down. So i gotta keep opening another window.

EDIT TO ADD: regarding the organization despite my seeming scattiness...yeah....*waves hand carelessly* daaaahlin' I can be infuriatingly contradictory.
My mother always says I am both opposites AT ONCE in anything...in all things + how the funk do I do that?
How will anyone ever...
Apparently it is one of my more infuriating traits...la la la LA...
One has to pity the creature who birthed such a monster, no?

No I think your contribution was gal. Beste provided the darlin'
Olivia the ducks & luv + Iain and Simi provided hunny
I just stole everything and mashed it all like a goooood unoriginal plagiarizing munky...
I couldnt add gal xcuz of the hehehehhe 😝 seeming gender bias. I'm pretty sure ducks and luvs and hunnys and tootsies come in both formats

Btw Anni....your travelling book project + what Margret sez about "making the presents" gave me a wonderful idea...I have this old (as in OLDER than I am) mehfugly copy of A Christmas Carol and have you heard of "altered books" basically...you jezzt take a book apart and put it together agn but much prettier? That's what I done with mine...of course now it looks like some three-year old went berserk with Tim Holtz distress paint and coloured paper and magazine cutouts but...still...*klingendeklingen*

The pleasure of reading a very very old book...hard to put into words. Its hedonistic. At a LEVEL.
Also #random...I want your white chocolate cookies + I'm jealous now...Ahdam is gonna make movies, lain is in Scotland reading Malazan (wtf?), you're eating cookies and Laura...she and Niki have ALL the books in the world + Anne Bishop.
