Sharone | 5 comments The book i am looking for I last read in 1998. It was a library book, shelved in the young adult fiction section, and it wasn't new. I may be mistaken about some of the details, but the ending i remember very clearly. It is about a young slave or servant boy in the barbarian/hun army fighting for Attila the Hun shortly before his death. The boy sees a beautiful, delicate, richly-dressed young girl one day, the daughter of one of the highest commanders, completely out of his league. He loves her and plots to meet her and woo her but she is already promised to Attila and she rejects the slave boy because she worships Attila and feels it is her duty to marry him. She does marry him and a few weeks later Attila dies suddenly and the boy thinks this is his chance to finally be with her. He plans to help her run away during the chaos but she refuses to go with him and instead willingly goes to be buried alive with the other wives in Attila's grave. It is very dark and sad and evocative, and i remember it as being very well written although that could have just been because i was so young. I do not remember any other character names, but i believe the girl's name was a derivative of Elizabeth, something like Ellith, for example.

Annamariah | 292 comments Haven't read it myself, but Slave of the Huns by Géza Gárdonyi might fit. The back cover blurb seems to be in Hungarian, but there are some helpful English reviews.
