No, Margo. It's early in May."
And I see that I should have read all the rest of the posts since it's already been answered!
Heather wrote: "Barbara I imagine it must be quite for non Catholics over here - they'd have to check on it every year. I observe Lent so for me it's not so bad."I had the same thought. But this year I've been so busy Ash Wednesday snuck up on me and I keep forgetting Easter's at the end of this month.
As far as books acquired, I went with a colleague/friend out to Kennys for a little while this afternoon. It was fantastic--well worth the taxi ride from the center of Galway. I got quite a haul--Nothing Is Black
In This Thy Day
All Names Have Been Changed
The Three Brothers
Town and Country: New Irish Short Stories
The Leavetaking
And A Slanting of the Sun
The prices were really reasonable.

Excellent and what fun!
I am still working on my pile from last summer.
Emma wrote: "That is quite the haul Cathleen. Keep that up and your suitcase will be all books. :-D"Well, there's good news and cautionary news. The good news is that they ship free when you buy books in their store, as well as when you buy them online. And once I heard that--I went a little hog wild. I forgot to add that I bought Doyle's A Star Called Henry, as well as Sebastian Barry's book for this month. I borrowed the Doyle book from my local library, but I had to return it not yet finished, so I bought a copy. Cautionary news is that once the staff member told me that they would happily ship the books to me for free, I bought more. I should be set for awhile :). Until I get to Dublin ;).

Then it was definitely a great shipping trip. You've been to Chapters before so you know what dangers lie within:)
That's a good servise Cathleen! Makes it easy to spend more money.I thought I had A star called Henry ordered from my library, but I didn't here from them. Went in to enquire last week and turned out that it is lost in transit. Ah well - it wasn't meant to be :-)

Emma I didn't know there was a discussion thread for it. I remember I bought the book in Kilburn, one hot and sunny Saturday from an overweight blind boy playing an accordion. This was more than a decade ago, I remember the thrill of picking up one of my first truly adult novels on my own, without a parent looking peering over my shoulder - I devoured A Star Called Henry that same night, using the week yellow light of a Duracell camping torch to enable my straining eyes to make out the words.

So today was a glorious day! Five books came into my house and I paid for none of them!
From the library:
Midnight Taxi Tango (Really enjoyed the first one in this series)
The Secret Scripture (Our Monthly Read)
The Book of Phoenix (The prequel to Who Fears Death. If I like Who Fears Death, I think I'll want to read the prequel right away)
The Gamal (This was a random one from browsing the library shelves. Has anyone read it? I noticed that awhile back Allan added it to his shelves. It also has a blurb from Colum McCann)

Oh and I almost forgot about the fifth book!
I won one of the Goodreads drawings and got a copy of Boy, Snow, Bird. It's always been raved about on the Book Riot podcasts, so I'm super excited to try it

Congratulations on winning the book! It looks very good.
Two new books arrived in the post, both post WWII alternate histories. United States of Japan is set in the states decades after the take over the US. interesting resistance type story.
Wolf by Wolf is set in Europe with a girl setting out to assassinate Hitler in the 1950s . Sounds like there is a fantasy spin to this and its a YA and has reviewed well so far.
What put United States of Japan on your radar Paul? Both look interesting. I've taken note of Wolf by Wolf especially.

I keep an eye on upcoming releases and the US of J sounded like a follow on to Man in the High Castle so worth a look. I think a few Blogs I followw mentioned it

In Edinburgh I only bought 3 books though I did buy a kid's guide to Edinburgh Castle and a book on The Celts exhibit at the National Museum. The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota
The Shepherd's Life: A People's History of the Lake District
The Story of Scotland: Inspired by the Great Tapestry of Scotland

You were very disciplined, Barbara! I bought The Shepherd's Life a couple of months ago from my local bookstore. It looks really good.

I needed space for all the stuff I bought at the yarn festival.

The book outlet in the old Wurlitzer building on Niagara Falls Blvd, N. Tonawanda, has lost its lease. All books are 50% off.
I went there and purchased the following: Inspector Ghote Hunts the Peacock by H.R.F. Keating, Harvest by Tess Gerritsen, both paper and The Broken Promise Land by Marcia Muller, Bangkok Tattoo by John Burdett and Hard Time by Sara Paretsky--hardcover. Grand total $8. 61, incl. tax

I couldn't resist the daily dea on audible, The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll through the Hidden Connections of the English Language

I recently bought Acts of the Assassins by Richard Beard. In a dark, dark wood by Ruth Ware, I think.
A Man Called Ove, don't know the author offhand.
H is for Hawk.
If cookbooks count I also got Nigella's latest, Simply Nigella.
Margo wrote: "I've heard A man called Ove is very funny. I'm looking forward to reading it too Lorraine"I've read and heard such good reviews about it I had to get it. I don't know when I'll get round to reading it, there's so much choice.
Have just ordered Preludes and Nocturnes this morning. Have wanted to read this for ages so can't wait

Let me know what you think of it Seraphina. So far I have only dabbled in Gaiman's work but he has a stroke of genius about him that's for sure

So I went to my second hand book store and they were giving away pink labelled books so I picked up.Tara Road
Quentins
Mystery Ride
Heart and Soul
The Return JourneyMidnight Band of Mercy: a novel
I also found Nocturnes for 5.99
I also won on goodreads The Layers: Eva

So in honor of my birthday coming up on April 21st and thus the end of my yearly book buying ban, a couple of friends and I took a bookstore road trip! I even wore special themed library book socks in honor of the trip.
We started with a visit to my favorite used Brownbread & Warbookstore, The Montague Book Mill Long time GRI members will have heard me and Cathleen talk about them before!
Books Purchased at the Book Mill
Brownbread & War
Missed Her
The Long Loneliness: The Autobiography of the Legendary Catholic Social Activist
Black Talk, Blue Thoughts, and Walking the Color Line: Dispatches from a Black Journalista
Thirty Days: On Retreat with the Exercises of St. Ignatius
Next up was a trip to another local (to me) used book shop, Grey Matter Books, which has a number of areas of specialty. My favorite part of the store is their selection of older pulp science fiction books and magazines. I like the cover art and the 2 books in one nature of the Ace-Doubles.
Pulp Picture 1
Pulp Picture 2
Pulp Picture 3
One of my friends also got me a present
I'm a bit nervous about whether I'll like it or not. It's one of her favorite books of all time, and it might be awkward if I don't love it.
Books Purchased/Acquired at Grey Matter Books:
Amazing Science Fiction Stories Volume 34 #2
The Kar-Chee Reign / Rocannon's World
The Prism / Crown of Infinity
Space Mercenaries / The Caves of Mars
Alanna: The First Adventure
Next up was a lunch stop in Brattleboro, VT. Brattleboro Books) where I came away with a book of zucchini recipes to gift to my parents (they grow it in their garden) and a book of Irish short stories. I was disappointed that Mystery on Main was unexpectedly closed, as I was looking forward to trying that one.
More books!
Book Purchased at Brattleboro Books:
Collected Stories (this is an Irish author. Does anyone know anything about her)
Last up, was the only new book bookstore of the day, Toadstool Books located in Keene, NH. I'd highly recommend it and will almost certainly return.
Books For Me
Board Books For Two Babies I Know
Books Purchased at Toadstool Books:
The Lost (Irish writer who I believe had a piece in Belfast Noir that I enjoyed)
The Hollow of the Hand
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories(Scifi/fantasy)
Chomp!
Haiku Baby
All and all, it was quite a fun day....but also tiring. Today's snow day provided a nice opportunity to rest after it.

Happy Birthday Sara . Great haul. Interested to see what you think of the Ken Liu one. I've read a number of his short stories in anthologies and they're usually amongst the best in the collections
